To wear red to a wedding?

It’s my cousin’s wedding coming up and it has taken me forever to find a dress that actually fits and looks nice! It is red midi dress with an a-line skirt and sleeves (and POCKETS!!).

I have seen a post on Facebook this evening, one of those click bait things from Reddit, saying that it’s inappropriate to wear red to a wedding, because it is saying that you have had a relationship with the groom??

Cue major panic at my dress being inappropriate when I finally thought I’d sorted it out. After 15 minutes I have talked myself round, but only based on the fact that it is a lesbian wedding and so there is in fact no groom at all 😂

Is this an actual thing, not wearing red to a wedding?? I thought the only colours you had to stay away from were white/cream/ivory!!

YABU: of course you don’t wear red to wedding

YANBU: you can wear red to a wedding

Gosh I’ve never heard this! In fact I’ve shortlisted a red phase 8 dress for a Xmas wedding 🤔 I say if your happy and comfortable wear it! Have a great time at the wedding!

Purplecatshopaholic · 12/09/2024 21:39

Don’t be ridiculous. It’s 2024. Wear whatever colour you like. HTH.

thepurplepenguin · 12/09/2024 21:39

I think it depends on the dress. Stereotypical silky, lacy, clingy or skimpy red dress, no. Midi dress with a line skirt and pockets, probably fine.

I wouldn't wear red to wear wedding. Not because of any daft suggestion about sleeping with the groom, but becuase it's.jist too shouty bright out and will clash in the photos with the more subtle/traditional wedding dress colours

DappledThings · 12/09/2024 21:46

It's fine. Someone will be along to tell you can't wear green either due to some random superstition, or anything even a tiny bit pale in case you manage to look bridal or black in case you look like you're protesting. All those are actually fine, including red.

I couldn't tell you what anyone wore to my wedding. It wasn't important.

UltramarineViolet · 12/09/2024 21:46

It depends on the style of the dress

If it is any way revealing or attention grabbing in style and also bright red then please dont wear it!

lovemelongtime · 12/09/2024 21:47

Sorry but we need to see the dress

zeibesaffron · 12/09/2024 21:48

I just wore a red dress to my nephews wedding- it was a same sex wedding and I have definitely not been with either groom!

I have never heard of the saying 😀

Theunamedcat · 12/09/2024 21:54

So as previously mentioned in years gone by

Red = slept with the groom
Green = bad luck
Black = objects
White = trying to be the bride

These days it's more of a free for all I would personally stear away from anything too attention grabbing in photos but there are ways around it a friend of mine made her photos black and white/sepia because someone wore such a bright dress every photo with them threw the balance off in the pictures 😂

I always believed that it’s unlucky for the bride to wear red and white, it means blood and tears. I don’t know if it’s every been proven, but my mum had red roses and a white dress, she died very young but was happily married and had 6 children.

It is definitely not silly, lacy, clingy or skimpy in any way. Only really showing a bit of ankle 😂

Have you got a link, this dress sounds great!

DillDanding · 12/09/2024 21:58

What nonsense. Wear red. It’s fine.

In all likelihood I won’t be in many of the official photos, it’s a big family so will maybe just be in a cousins photo! But thank you for your thoughts ☺️

I’ve got a wedding soon too and found a nice red dress and had to Google etiquette 😂

it’s not that it symbolises a relationship with the groom (old wives tale) It’s apparently too ‘bold’ of a colour and can be seen as trying to outshine the bride, can also take attention away from the couple in photos ect. So I decided against it.. not because I wouldn’t wear red to a wedding.. but because I then got a fear that others might think that’s exactly why I’ve worn it 😂

This is a really good point. I couldn’t tell you what anyone apart from the bridesmaids wore to my wedding either 😂

It is not revealing or attention grabbing, showing a bit of ankle and fore-arm at most!

And no one thought you were being too loud? I feel like this thread has calmed one fear and brought on another 😂

I had never heard of this before ! Even green? It isn’t a super bright red so hopefully won’t be too much in photos, I doubt I will be in many!
