To wear red to a wedding?

It’s my cousin’s wedding coming up and it has taken me forever to find a dress that actually fits and looks nice! It is red midi dress with an a-line skirt and sleeves (and POCKETS!!).

I have seen a post on Facebook this evening, one of those click bait things from Reddit, saying that it’s inappropriate to wear red to a wedding, because it is saying that you have had a relationship with the groom??

Cue major panic at my dress being inappropriate when I finally thought I’d sorted it out. After 15 minutes I have talked myself round, but only based on the fact that it is a lesbian wedding and so there is in fact no groom at all 😂

Is this an actual thing, not wearing red to a wedding?? I thought the only colours you had to stay away from were white/cream/ivory!!

YABU: of course you don’t wear red to wedding

YANBU: you can wear red to a wedding

My aunt would say not to wear a red hat… red hat, no knickers apparently! Similar idea I guess. I only found this out when my mum wore a red hat to my sister’s wedding, and us bridesmaids were in unlucky green (my favourite colour)

Looks lovely - you had me saying yes it’s fine as soon as you mentioned pockets ! Seriously it will be fine

For certain ethnic groups, there is an etiquette for not wearing red, I think these have already been mentioned on this thread. Kim Kardashian wore a red dress to that very luxurious Indian wedding and was criticised for it.

Otherwise, what a stunning dress! I love to see people dressed in things they like and will wear again. A friend wore a red dress to my wedding a long time ago, never thought about it til it was discussed on Mumsnet.

Just looked back at my wedding photos (15 years ago) - multiple guests in red dresses (incl some v. traditional relatives), several red pashminas and jackets. The registrar wore a red jacket. I didnt feel upstaged, the photos with them in are as beautiful as all the others. I think you're fine!

It goes
Green - unlucky
White - wants to be bride
Pastel tones - wants to be bridesmaid
Red - slept with the groom
Yellow - slept with the bride
Orange - slept with the groom and the bride but they don't know
Purple - slept with the groom and bride and they both know
Black - wants to be the vicar
Stripy - wants to be a zebra
Blue - everyone knows what that means, but I don't want to say it directly

God I’ve never heard that! I had a red fascinator, shoes and shawl at my daughter!s wedding!!!😮😮😮😮🫣🤣🤣🤣

I've never heard of that! Obviously not white but never heard of avoiding certain colours! I get married in November and will now be looking out for people wearing red, black or green 😆

What a load of twaddle! I wore red to a wedding once and I wouldn’t touch the groom
with a ten foot pole. I wore red because it suits my colouring.
