What are your funeral songs?

Appreciate it's a bit of a morbid question, but an important one (I feel) nonetheless. My family have always been quite pragmatic and have wills, but also a document entitled 'in the event of my death' My Mum keeps a copy of hers in her mobile phone case.

I think it's a last opportunity to tell people who you are / how you feel / what music you loved. Apart from that, it's also an opportunity to leave some potential comforting 'words'

My sister died young - aged only 29 - of complications from a heart issue related to her Downs Syndrome. At her funeral she had Alone by Heart and Lily The Pink played. She alos had the theme from Heartbeat. For a short time afterwards I couldn't listen to the former, but now it makes me smile. Lily The Pink made us all smile, as did Heartbeat as it was what made her smile too.

Anyway, mine are:

Stop Crying Your Heart Out by Oasis, and
White Lies by Stereophonics (I love them, amd this is my favourite song of theirs)

Apologies to anyone recently bereaved. I hope this isn't upsetting.

Time to say goodbye, Sarah Brightman. My dp is funeral for a friend. We will have neither as going to go for pure cremation 😂

Ooh, and also Time, Pink Floyd, best song in the history of songs 😃

Horrace · 11/09/2024 20:34

Sunshine on Leith - by The Proclaimers

You make me feel (mighty real) - by Sylvester

Downtoyou · 11/09/2024 20:35

For my 13 year old son's recent funeral

Walking in: The Beatles - Here comes the sun (he did a Beatles music project at school and loved the song, plus I am originally from Merseyside)

Photo montage: One Direction - The story of my life

The committal: Coldplay - Sky full of stars ( he listened to Coldplay throughout all his proton beam treatment, he had cancer)

Walking out: Pharel Williams - Happy (this was a difficult choice, but we really wanted to celebrate his life. His friends did a conga and we all danced and it was magical)

I can't listen to any of these songs anymore

@Downtoyou, I'm so sorry - that's absolutely heartbreaking. Flowers

Disco inferno, to play so you hear "burn baby burn" as I go through the curtains to get cremated.

Came here to say the same!

JBJ · 11/09/2024 20:40

It changes regularly, but I have a list on my phone. Currently:

Good riddance (time of your life) - Green Day
Don’t cry - Guns n Roses
Life goes on - Ed Sheeran and Luke Combs
Hallelujah - Bon Jovi
Find the river - REM
What I’ve done - Linkin Park
In Loving Memory - Alter Bridge

'As' George Michael and Mary J Blige version, used it for my DH's funeral and planing on having it at mine. Quite upbeat and lovely words.

That reminds me of the U2 and Mary J Blige version of 'One' which is one of my absolute favourite songs with very specific memories. I guess that's the thing with songs. They are either meaningful because of the lyrics, because of where you were at that point in your life, or because you simply love them.

Lord of the Dance (a favourite since Childhood)
I'll Find My Way Home (just a beautiful apt song)
Time to Say Goodbye (see above)
and, some humour from Me as the curtains close, Fire.

Vespering by Thea Gilmore and Street Spirit (Fade Out) by Radiohead.

I had Street Spirit played at my wedding (after much badgering of the DJ) It cleared the dance floor apart from me and my husband. Pfft. Heathens, the rest of them!

For my Dad, I will have to play something by Pink Floyd, but there will also have to be a Dylan or Cohen song as he loves them both. He's the only member of our family who won't discuss death (which is entirely understandable and his choice)

A man of taste. I'm having Bird on a Wire for my funeral. I guess knocking on heavens door is too obvious my favourite Dylan song is Positively 4th Street but it's far too long. X

Bichette · 11/09/2024 20:49

The theme from Black Beauty. I think it's called Galloping Home

tryingcouchto5K · 11/09/2024 20:49

Send me the moon - Sara Bareilles
Gravity - Sara Bareilles

Come What May - Moulin Rouge

Don’t look back in anger- Oasis
The worlds greatest- R Kelly
Cannonball- Damien Rice

Who wants to live forever by Queen
My immortal by Evanescence
Dancing Queen by abba

Who wants to live forever is a heartbreaking song in itself, never mind the circumstances of it being one of (the last?) of Freddie's songs.

My Immortal is also beautiful but heartbreaking. I love Evanescence.

A friend named Amy wants Amy Hit The Atmosphere by Counting Crows. It's a great song but kind of limited if that's not your name!

A piper playing Highland Cathedral before and after
Queen Don't Stop Me Now
Hymn-How Great Thou Art

I want a piper playing Highland Cathedral as my coffin is coming into the building. I want Moon River by Andy Williams and One by U2.
