What are your funeral songs?

Appreciate it's a bit of a morbid question, but an important one (I feel) nonetheless. My family have always been quite pragmatic and have wills, but also a document entitled 'in the event of my death' My Mum keeps a copy of hers in her mobile phone case.

I think it's a last opportunity to tell people who you are / how you feel / what music you loved. Apart from that, it's also an opportunity to leave some potential comforting 'words'

My sister died young - aged only 29 - of complications from a heart issue related to her Downs Syndrome. At her funeral she had Alone by Heart and Lily The Pink played. She alos had the theme from Heartbeat. For a short time afterwards I couldn't listen to the former, but now it makes me smile. Lily The Pink made us all smile, as did Heartbeat as it was what made her smile too.

Anyway, mine are:

Stop Crying Your Heart Out by Oasis, and
White Lies by Stereophonics (I love them, amd this is my favourite song of theirs)

Apologies to anyone recently bereaved. I hope this isn't upsetting.

Colours-Kirsty McColl
The carnival is over-The Seekers
Benedictus-Karl Jenkins
Wings to fly-Susan Boyle

WaverOfSticks · 11/09/2024 20:57

I suppose if you want to give people something to think about you could choose Psycho Killer by Talking Heads...

DogInATent · 11/09/2024 20:58

I'm not sure I could strike the balance between what I'd want, what would be appropriate, and what would be fair on anyone attending.

Definitely Night Swimming by REM, but everything else starts to fall foul of both appropriate and fair. I need to think on this!

watchuswreckthemic · 11/09/2024 20:59

Told this story a few times but my dad had 'firestarter' by the prodigy. He was 78 and I swear we nearly caused about 50 people to have a heart attacks when it blasted out.
I'll be having 'you'll never walk alone' like he did and also something for a good sing along yet to be determined!

RainbowZebraWarrior · 11/09/2024 21:06

@Cherrysherbet those songs are beautiful choices. Choosing meaningful songs for your Mum is probably the last one thing you can do to show your love for her.

One of my reasons for starting this thread is because my Mum will be 80 soon and has cancer. I know I will miss her so much, but I treasure each day I have with her.

Sending much love and strength ❤️

Ain't nobody Chaka khan ( reminds me of my youth)

Wings Birdy

mangoesaretheonlyfruit · 11/09/2024 21:13

Move on up by Curtis Mayfield
Magic Moments by Perry Como
Bird on a Wire by Leonard Cohen

Member984815 · 11/09/2024 21:14

Into the wonder by aqualung and of course another one bites the dust by queen . I think it's wise to write down a rough guide for preferences for the bereaved people so they have some idea of your wishes it takes some of the difficult decisions off them.

OrwellianTimes · 11/09/2024 21:15

Jimmy Eat World - hear you me

Notreallyawaitress · 11/09/2024 21:15

You’re Dead - Norma Tanega
To Build a Home - The Cinematic Orchestra
Fire - Kasabian ( for the cremation bit)
Ding Dong the Witch is Dead - The Munchkins
😁

ForPearlViper · 11/09/2024 21:19

I was vetoed on having Ring of Fire for my Dad - he loved Johnny Cash. However, I understand now it is very common for cremations. I want Wipe Out by the Surfaris for when I go into the cremation oven. There's a bit at the beginning with a cackle and bit that sounds like breaking wood.

Sorry. I have organised a couple of incredible tasteful funerals and will do again.

But it isn't what I want for mysel.

LindorDoubleChoc · 11/09/2024 21:20

I haven't thought about all of my funeral music but for as long as I can remember my absolute definite non-negotiable number one choice has been the theme from the 1970s TV series Black Beauty (Galloping Home) and I have told various family members this.

So - I was so bloody annoyed when Claire Balding said this was her funeral music when she did Tracks of My Years on Radio 2 recently! I blimmin well thought of it first Claire Hmm. It's MY funeral tune.

BlessedBeTheFruitCake · 11/09/2024 21:20

I’d like
Entrance - An acoustic version of Creep
Reflection - Stevie Wonder, A Place in the sun
Exit - ELO, Mr. Blue sky

inappropriateraspberry · 11/09/2024 21:22

I want to be cremated and as the curtains close, the husky strains of Tina Turner's 'Steamy Windows' will fill the room!

JimberlyJo · 11/09/2024 20:37

Are you a Hibby?

Not a Hibby. Just love the Proclaimers and that song makes me cry.
My family are Scottish

Demonhunter · 11/09/2024 21:29

What I'd like and what would be appropriate are 2 different things...
On entry - O'Death by Jen Titus
Reflection - Renegade by Styx
Curtains closing- God was never on your side by Motorhead.

Demonhunter · 11/09/2024 21:32

My dad knew death was coming having terminal cancer and wanted Ring of Fire by Johnny Cash but my mam vetoed it.
He said for many years the other 2 he wanted which were Walk of Life and Get off of my Cloud.

Mintgum · 11/09/2024 21:33

Nellie the elephant packed her trunk and said good by to the circus.
Off she went with a trumpety tump trump trump trump.

Ihopeithinkiknow · 11/09/2024 21:36

Mine is my username lol it's by Oasis, I have a few more but it's mainly that one. At my 22 year old sons funeral in 2022 we played Motorcycle Emptiness by The Manic Street Preachers and Sit Down by James as they were 2 of his favourite songs and you could hear him singing his little heart out (badly lol) every time he listened to them and luckily I have got him singing Sit Down on video so I can listen to it whenever I want

FairviewRosiev2 · 11/09/2024 21:39

springsteen & Northern Soul girl here
going in If I Should Fall Behind - Bruce & Patti
hymn Lord is my Shepherd
reflection Bobby Jean - Bruce
committal I’m on my way - Dean Parrish

brunettemic · 11/09/2024 21:40

A friend always said to say “Chasing Cars” because of the lyrics “if I lay here would you lie with me” or failing that “Knock On Wood” 😂

My personal choices though probably “Leave Out All The Rest” by Linkin Park. Also “You’ll Never Walk Alone”.

Oh amazing choices! When the manics were still at their best and James is one of my favourite bands! Your son had impeccable taste ❤️

Downtoyou · 11/09/2024 20:35

For my 13 year old son's recent funeral

Walking in: The Beatles - Here comes the sun (he did a Beatles music project at school and loved the song, plus I am originally from Merseyside)

Photo montage: One Direction - The story of my life

The committal: Coldplay - Sky full of stars ( he listened to Coldplay throughout all his proton beam treatment, he had cancer)

Walking out: Pharel Williams - Happy (this was a difficult choice, but we really wanted to celebrate his life. His friends did a conga and we all danced and it was magical)

I can't listen to any of these songs anymore

Beautiful choices for him ❤️
