What are your funeral songs?

Appreciate it's a bit of a morbid question, but an important one (I feel) nonetheless. My family have always been quite pragmatic and have wills, but also a document entitled 'in the event of my death' My Mum keeps a copy of hers in her mobile phone case.

I think it's a last opportunity to tell people who you are / how you feel / what music you loved. Apart from that, it's also an opportunity to leave some potential comforting 'words'

My sister died young - aged only 29 - of complications from a heart issue related to her Downs Syndrome. At her funeral she had Alone by Heart and Lily The Pink played. She alos had the theme from Heartbeat. For a short time afterwards I couldn't listen to the former, but now it makes me smile. Lily The Pink made us all smile, as did Heartbeat as it was what made her smile too.

Anyway, mine are:

Stop Crying Your Heart Out by Oasis, and
White Lies by Stereophonics (I love them, amd this is my favourite song of theirs)

Apologies to anyone recently bereaved. I hope this isn't upsetting.

We had my lovely Mums funeral just a few weeks ago.
We had Eva Cassidy, ‘over the rainbow’ going in,
Foster and Allen, ‘after all these years’, while we looked at the photos on a screen, and Jim Reeves, ‘I love you because’.
She didn’t tell me what she wanted for her funeral, so I had to choose the music myself.

Each song had a special meaning, and I hope she would have loved it.
I miss her so much.

I’d like to be brought into the overture from wicked which must include the “good news she’s dead” bit.

The voice within by Christina Ageuillera in the middle bit for DC or you will be found from dear Evan Hansen.

Then out through the crem curtains to something cheery and a bit daft like You’re welcome (moana)

We had the ukulele version of over the rainbow for my gran’s funeral and it was the perfect song to end on for her.

Pink Floyd, "Flaming." Lovely little song (in my opinion!) and if the congregation listen to the lyrics then they'll have a giggle, as I often threaten to come back and haunt my people.
Also, "Atmosphere," by Joy Division. Beautiful.

Time to say Goodbye

RubberyChicken · 11/09/2024 20:15

Newuser75 · 11/09/2024 20:18

I want the fire by the crazy world of Arthur brown as they close the curtains as It's kind of my sense of humour.
Then somewhere over the rainbow or fields of gold.

SerenityNowInsanityLater · 11/09/2024 20:18

Blóðberg by Sigur Ros… so beautiful.
I’d let my loved ones choose the rest.

thursdaymurderclub · 11/09/2024 20:18

my ex husband had ... always look on the bright side! and blue moon (his favourite football teams song)

this prompted me and DH to write out our own funeral wishes.. I only have the one song.. How long will i love you by the Waterboys.. its our song and we also have matching verses tattoo'd

KohlaParasaurus · 11/09/2024 20:18

If I popped off now I'd be coming in to Rattler by The Seekers and going out to Rock and Roll Dreams Come Through by Jim Steinman, though I think the children might sub in Mr Blue Sky or Chain Reaction.

I could make a completely different selection tomorrow.

For hymns, I like Be Still My Soul but my mum's already bagsied that one for herself (along with the 23rd Psalm, to which she is welcome). Maybe I'll have Hark the Herald Angels Sing and Guide Me O Thou Great Jehovah because there's a fair chance most people will be able and willing to have a good go at belting them out.

Funnily enough, I've just come in from my run where I'd been thinking that The Tourists 'So good to be back home again' on my Spotify playlist would be a good funeral song for me. My other choice is Morningtown Ride by The Seekers.
