AIBU? Why has this death got so little attention

This happened in my town - Newry - Northern Ireland last week. Anu was a nurse who had been attacked repeatedly by kids. She died from an asthma attack after coming across another person getting attacked. There has been a lot of hate crime/intimidation in Northern Ireland in recent months.

There has been very little on the news/online/discussion about Anu locally.

I only know about it as I happened to turn on the TV and caught the end of an interview with Anu’s heartbroken brother and sister on the local news. My husband works in the area, he watches and listens to news several times a day and he hadn’t heard about it until I mentioned it yesterday. I spoke to several people yesterday who are in customer facing roles so talking to people day in day out and most of them hadn’t heard about it.

Why is this not more high profile? AIBU to think that this should cause uproar?

Jesus this is terrible! I'm not Irish but I hadn't heard a thing about this. The statement by the police sounds so cold - he doesn't seem to think the two things are related at all!

You're right this should be a much bigger news item than it is.

BarbaraHoward · 06/09/2024 09:17

That's awful. I'm in NI and hadn't heard.

confusedabouthormones · 06/09/2024 09:19

Heavens! I'm in NI and I didn't hear this. Was it on the news?

I feel like we are seeing more hate crime in Belfast too. Lots of no brain idiots with nothing else to do. I'm embarrassed and ashamed of them.

Flibflobflibflob · 06/09/2024 09:21

Oh god thats awful, poor woman. This is similar to the man in Leicester, complaints had been made previously and nothing is done.

Tangled123 · 06/09/2024 09:23

I’m in Newry too and didn’t know anything about this. It’s shocking. I hope karma will get those kids at least seeing as the justice system won’t.

OrlandointheWilderness · 06/09/2024 09:24

How awful. That poor woman. I haven't heard this either.

MidnightPatrol · 06/09/2024 09:26

I saw another story this week in Ireland (Cork) where an Indian student had a guy try to strange him with a price of rope in the street (!).

Photos of him doing it and laughing circulating too, like it’s all just a bit of fun.

WTF.

poppymango · 06/09/2024 09:28

Oh god that's heartbreaking. I hadn't heard a thing about it. Another woman murdered and yet another case of extreme violence from kids - how is this not headline news?? Poor Anu.

Neighbours87 · 06/09/2024 09:29

I’m in newry too. The first I heard was when it made the cover of the reporter. It’s devastating and makes me so angry. Where were the parents of those kids?

Duckyfondant · 06/09/2024 09:36

Heartbreaking. RIP Anu. OP, YADNBU

Agapornis · 06/09/2024 09:44

Why? Probably because she's black, foreign, and all her family live abroad [it seems], so she has no one to advocate for her. As a immigrant, this worries me but it also nothing new.

Dogstar78 · 06/09/2024 10:06

That is disgusting and you are totally right. Totally agree with @Agapornis

Lightfromtheoak · 06/09/2024 10:56

I'm Irish (ROI) and read it on online news last night, but checking now it seems to be only The Irish Mirror and irishnews.ie that reported it?

It is so terrible in every way. We should be ashamed of ourselves.

poetryandwine · 06/09/2024 10:59

This is heartbreaking, as PP said. Anu’s death deserves wider coverage

Velvian · 06/09/2024 11:01

That us so upsetting, poor woman. You are right OP. It should be more widely reported.

chippylips · 06/09/2024 11:02

It was on the news last night. Lead story.

laveritable · 06/09/2024 11:15

This is awful. Justice for Anu.

Lightfromtheoak · 06/09/2024 11:19

chippylips · 06/09/2024 11:02

It was on the news last night. Lead story.

Which news @chippylips?

stanleypops66 · 06/09/2024 11:21

It's awful. I heard about it in bbc radio Ulster. It was a talking point around race hate on talkback during the week.

dustoffthebooks · 06/09/2024 11:23

Oh how awful, poor woman.

OneTC · 06/09/2024 11:25

It came up in my news feed on Chrome, on the BBC website.

A very sad story

BeetyAxe · 06/09/2024 11:26

I only just seen this😢😢can’t believe it hasn’t had more coverage. Makes me ashamed to be Irish.

chippylips · 06/09/2024 12:26

Sorry, it was on Wednesdays news. ITV

darkchocolateisbetter · 06/09/2024 12:28

Why is this not more high profile? AIBU

Let's face it, she is black and of Nigerian origin. The media (and public) are usually much more interested if the victim is white :-(

itsmylife7 · 06/09/2024 12:32

Tragic story and the first I heard of it.
