AIBU? Why has this death got so little attention

This happened in my town - Newry - Northern Ireland last week. Anu was a nurse who had been attacked repeatedly by kids. She died from an asthma attack after coming across another person getting attacked. There has been a lot of hate crime/intimidation in Northern Ireland in recent months.

There has been very little on the news/online/discussion about Anu locally.

I only know about it as I happened to turn on the TV and caught the end of an interview with Anu’s heartbroken brother and sister on the local news. My husband works in the area, he watches and listens to news several times a day and he hadn’t heard about it until I mentioned it yesterday. I spoke to several people yesterday who are in customer facing roles so talking to people day in day out and most of them hadn’t heard about it.

Why is this not more high profile? AIBU to think that this should cause uproar?

Anu Okusanya

YANBU - I read about in the BelTel who covered Long’s reaction separately (both on the 4th). Then yesterday they’d a subscriber-only interview with Mrs Okusanya’s brother; & today her death’s been included in a subscriber-only piece on the new hate crime legislation being brought before the assembly. So yes, they’re monetising content now people are reading about her/have heard the story & want more information. Which they often do, but 🤦‍♀️

What makes it to the mainland about NI is weird, frankly - the appeal that the 20% VAT on fees shouldn’t be applied because NI schools are different & special was front page on BBC news this morning, albeit at the bottom 🤨

Thanks for this. I hadn’t seen this article. https://m.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/news/northern-ireland/death-of-care-worker-who-fled-altercation-tragic-and-appalling-says-long/a781653805.html

I feel even worse after readin* this. I didn’t realise the people were present when Anu began struggling to breathe. She must have been so terrified. The police statement does seem very condemnatory. Besides Naomi Long. I haven’t heard of many other politicians speaking out.

if she wasn't black or a female we would hear a lot more.

Death of care worker who fled altercation ‘tragic’ and ‘appalling’, says Long

The death of a Nigerian woman who had a heart attack after witnessing a street altercation demonstrates the “abject terror” being experienced by ethnic minority groups in Northern Ireland, the Justice Minister has said.

I knew she would be black just reading your title.

Black people only make the news when they are the perpetrator.

Not really! The new chief scout is a black man, dragged himself up from a sink estate to conquer the North pole... all over the news today. Very positive story.

This poor lady sounds to me like one of the countless victims (none of whom make the news) that are terrorised by feral gangs up and down the country and occasionally a death or injury results. This lady has made the news, countless others don't. There was another lady that made the news last week (pregnant and lost her baby) thanks to some feral gang. She was white though (not that colour matters to me like it does to some).

Crucially, Mrs Okusanya was the victim, not the perpetrator. Black victims of crime are less likely to get media attention than white ones, largely due to unconscious bias rather than conscious exclusion/prejudice. Still unacceptable, clearly.

Black people also feature in news stories for all sorts of reasons - like Ms Gyamfi participating in the Miss/Mrs Africa UK/IE Pageant, as covered by BBC London; as one of the wheelchair users included in a story on the lack of accessibility on the railway; as politicians

Colour should matter to posters in that anyone who is white should be aware of & alert to the fact that this brings privilege. You may be [multiply] disadvantaged in other ways, but being white lets you move through the world in a way that black people are simply not free to. The BLACHIR Report should matter to you. That black women have a 3.7 times higher rate of mortality maternal mortality should matter to you.

I live in NI and never heard about this until I happened upon this thread! How appalling.

You poor soul, Anu. What a dreadful tragedy. RIP 🌺
