AIBU? Why has this death got so little attention

This happened in my town - Newry - Northern Ireland last week. Anu was a nurse who had been attacked repeatedly by kids. She died from an asthma attack after coming across another person getting attacked. There has been a lot of hate crime/intimidation in Northern Ireland in recent months.

There has been very little on the news/online/discussion about Anu locally.

I only know about it as I happened to turn on the TV and caught the end of an interview with Anu’s heartbroken brother and sister on the local news. My husband works in the area, he watches and listens to news several times a day and he hadn’t heard about it until I mentioned it yesterday. I spoke to several people yesterday who are in customer facing roles so talking to people day in day out and most of them hadn’t heard about it.

Why is this not more high profile? AIBU to think that this should cause uproar?

Thank you for highlighting this, as I hadn't heard about it.

I'll share as much as I can.

As pps have said - it's pretty obvious why it's not more widely reported, but we keep our heads up and carry on.

And100 · 06/09/2024 12:51

I don't know why it has got so little attention. Especially as another person (I believe an 80yo man) has been killed by children who had also previously been reported to the police.

There are clear parallels - abusive children actually killing people (whilst police knew about the behaviour and did nothing) - and both victims were people of colour.

Choochoo21 · 06/09/2024 12:52

This is so awful!!!

I haven’t heard about this and I don’t understand why it isn’t huge news!

There was a pregnant woman randomly attacked a few days ago by a group of teens and she suffered a miscarriage because of it and that has got hardly any media coverage either.

Sunshineonararainydayyy · 06/09/2024 12:58

I hadn't seen this and its incredibly sad. I did see the case in Leicester where children between 12-14 had been tormenting an 80 year old man from India originally and he died from a phsical attack. I think that's been more prominent in the headlines as a 14 year old has been arrested for murder.

There are some horribly hateful people around. What's worse is that children are the perpetrators. The case last week where a 12 year old was due to be sentenced for rioting outside a hotel where asylum seekers were and his mum has gone to Ibiza instead of being with him in court. Some of the 'parenting' in this country is just so bloody awful.

BrokenWing · 06/09/2024 12:59

The national media only pick up some stories, there are violent deaths nearly every day in the UK they don't all get picked up.

We have had a couple of local stories, one where a local man attacked and killed his ex on hospital grounds, had a high speed chase around the town, chasing his teen step-dc, murdered them in the middle of the town and then drove off and was later found dead having killed himself by driving headfirst into a wall.

I thought it would be all over the news as it was horrific, but it only appeared in our local papers.

AsYouWiiiiiiiiiiiiish · 06/09/2024 13:02

I was once chased by a group of boys on scooters aged between about 12 and 16.

They were shouting at me and corralling me in between them.

All I had done was walk past them at 8pm. They followed me until luckily I got to my friend's house which wasn't far.

I am absolutely not comparing this to what happened to this beautiful woman, but it was absolutely terrifying and we really need to start talking about violent and aggressive young people.

Their behavior seems to be escalating and I think social media plays a big part.

larklane17 · 06/09/2024 13:11

Thank you for speaking up for Anu. She cared so much for others.
Finding those who did this and sentencing them, still does not bring her back to those who loved her.

LBFseBrom · 06/09/2024 13:12

I read about it before, it was terrible. Poor young woman. I feel for her family.

NitroNine · 06/09/2024 13:14

YANBU - I read about in the BelTel who covered Long’s reaction separately (both on the 4th). Then yesterday they’d a subscriber-only interview with Mrs Okusanya’s brother; & today her death’s been included in a subscriber-only piece on the new hate crime legislation being brought before the assembly. So yes, they’re monetising content now people are reading about her/have heard the story & want more information. Which they often do, but 🤦‍♀️

What makes it to the mainland about NI is weird, frankly - the appeal that the 20% VAT on fees shouldn’t be applied because NI schools are different & special was front page on BBC news this morning, albeit at the bottom 🤨

Lemonadeand · 06/09/2024 13:23

That’s tragic. First I’ve heard of it, sadly.

Changingnameagain · 06/09/2024 13:48

Thank you for drawing attention to this. I'm in England and had not heard about this murder.
RIP lovely Anu- I hope the scum who did this are brought to justice.

Ponoka7 · 06/09/2024 13:53

I read that and also this
https://www.google.com/amp/s/metro.co.uk/2024/09/03/pregnant-woman-suffers-miscarriage-attacked-schoolboys-21542450/amp/
We are having massive problems with teenagers. An old couple in their 70's had them surround their car trying to get in. Luckily it's by a Weatherspoons and the fellas aren't shy, so they've actually sorted out the problems in one area, but the teens have moved.
I'm startto think that violence against women and girls is being massively under-reported. What has drawn my attention is how none violent women seem to be getting prison sentences, while very violent young men aren't. It shows the little regard the Tory government did actually have for women, despite the numerous threads congratulationing them on knowing what was was.

Pregnant woman suffers miscarriage after being 'attacked by schoolboys'

The victim was waiting for a bus when her assailants knocked her to the floor.

I’m in England and not heard about this either. Just awful.

BeerForMyHorses · 06/09/2024 14:13

Absolutely shocking.

Agapornis · 06/09/2024 14:55

The murder of Bhim Kholi is not entirely comparable, he had lived in that community for over 40 years so has plenty of people to care and talk about him. News consumers like reading vox pops from vague acquaintances who knew a victim from dogwalking, or being a good, known person in the community. Newly immigrated workers don't have that network to speak for them. I've lived here over 15 years and I think I've only started building that sort of network in the last 3 years.

Having a known teenage suspect will help, but is only part of the massive disparity in reporting.

Wattleanddaub · 06/09/2024 16:38

I only saw this yesterday on the Armagh I website.
The whole thing just awful. That poor woman. And if it ever comes to court it won't be murder because she died due to an asthma attack. Apparently she saw the kids attacking someone else, knew they'd seen her and would move on to her next and so ran to her neighbours. Then didn't recover from the resultant asthma attack.

The area seems to have a lot of problems with anti-social behaviour towards those who don't 'fit' within the main religious and ethnic demographic.

vladimirVsvolodymr · 06/09/2024 18:29

Poor woman, rip Any. I didn't hear of this ❤️

GrouachMacbeth · 06/09/2024 20:12

There is a good reason to debate and to agree firm action to stop or at least tackle feral teens and the criminal element.

I recall the tabloids featuring battered and bruised pensioners in a campaign in the 1990s - did it change anything? I suspect not. Sold a lot of papers.

It's clear that there are victims of all ethnicities. I was surprised that racism was not mentioned in the gentleman in Leicester's murder. But we don't know the ethnicities of the accused. ..

That's awful. I'm in NI and hadn't heard.

I’m not surprised. I spoke to a few other people from the Newry area today and none of them knew🤷

Heavens! I'm in NI and I didn't hear this. Was it on the news?

I feel like we are seeing more hate crime in Belfast too. Lots of no brain idiots with nothing else to do. I'm embarrassed and ashamed of them.

Me too.

I’m in Newry too and didn’t know anything about this. It’s shocking. I hope karma will get those kids at least seeing as the justice system won’t.

I’m pretty sure. They’ll get away with it and never face consequences. It’s disgusting.

I saw another story this week in Ireland (Cork) where an Indian student had a guy try to strange him with a price of rope in the street (!).

Photos of him doing it and laughing circulating too, like it’s all just a bit of fun.

WTF.

Its disgusting. Ireland the land of a thousand welcomes (as long as you’re not from an ethic minority and have plenty of cash)

I’m in newry too. The first I heard was when it made the cover of the reporter. It’s devastating and makes me so angry. Where were the parents of those kids?

Oh god that's heartbreaking. I hadn't heard a thing about it. Another woman murdered and yet another case of extreme violence from kids - how is this not headline news?? Poor Anu.

This is probably about her being a PoC, not a woman. I just feel that it's more likely to be about racism
