Hamilton - anyone else not love it?

Honestly?

Have wanted to see this for a long time, mainly to see what all the fuss is about as, having searched up the story, thought it sounded a bit dull. However, I decided that all the rave reviews couldn't be wrong so when my teenage daughter suggested it (it's particularly highly rated amongst her age group), I jumped at the chance.

We didn't go into it cold, we had a rough idea of the story and had listened to the soundtrack so was familiar with the songs. I also quite like rap and was well aware that the whole story is told in rhyme.

Unfortunately, we really didn't enjoy it, too long and pretty boring tbh. There's no denying the talent of the cast, how they remember all those lyrics is impressive. Unfortunately, we had trouble understanding what they were saying much of the time so frequently got lost and confused. What we could hear and have read since was pretty clever though! We also had trouble knowing who was who as some actors played more than one part. I tried hard to like it, I really did. There are a few good songs but they're frequently repeated and got on my nerves after a while. I just found the whole thing a bit meh, as did my daughter. I didn't completely hate it, and shed a tear at the end (my daughter didn't, saying she didn't care about any of them!) but we were pretty relieved when it was over. I'm saying this as a regular theatre goer who generally enjoys musicals but this is one of the worst I have seen.

Judging by the enthusiastic reaction of the audience, we were in the minority. There are reviews echoing my thoughts, but again they are in the minority. There was a suggestion of "emperors new clothes" in some of the them and I wonder if maybe there's some truth in that as I certainly don't consider my daughter or myself unintelligent, but we just didn't get it!!

So disappointed 😥

Glad I'm not alone. I just didn't get it.
We also tried to watch the filmed version of the stage show & gave up at the interval!

TipsyPearlEagle · 26/08/2024 11:43

My daughter loved it and went back to see it again
I couldn't wait to leave

lollyPaloozah · 26/08/2024 11:44

I love almost all contemporary musicals, and I can appreciate Hamilton is clever, but I don’t enjoy it. I think it’s overhyped

Glenthebattleostrich · 26/08/2024 11:44

Me, however DD is obsessed with it so has asked for tickets for Christmas and going to the theatre is 'our' thing. Going to have to suffer through it.

eosmum · 26/08/2024 11:44

We love it. The part with the characters playing different parts means something, it escapes me now, but it's really clever.

GinToBegin · 26/08/2024 11:45

I didn’t enjoy it, and was quite bored by the end, but I seemed to be very much in the minority. I certainly wouldn’t recommend it to anyone.

Lamelie · 26/08/2024 11:46

I loved it but also know what you mean. I found it quite relentless. Usually musicals and operas even pop concerts have changes of pace and tempo and this doesn’t- it’s one high octane note.
However I did follow the plot, and there’s an early spoiler definitely added to the experience.

IHopeYouStepOnALegPiece · 26/08/2024 11:46

No, not just you! I love musicals and will happily watch them multiple times but this was a never again! It was fine but SO fucking long, my god!

CaptainCabinetsTrappedInCabinets · 26/08/2024 11:47

I bloody love musicals. I am hard pushed to find one I don't like. I do not like Hamilton. I just didn't get it. I don't really know the story or who anyone was and then when everyone swapped I was really bloody confused.

MagneticSquirrel · 26/08/2024 11:47

Finally I’m not the only person in the world that found Hamilton completely underwhelming and boring!

Jazzabel · 26/08/2024 11:49

Perhaps it was overhyped for you so you were expecting some kind of mind blowing experience when really it’s just a musical? Personally I like it it a lot, but I don’t think it holds a candle to Les Miserables. I took my friend to see the Hamilton tour a few months ago, and her review was that it was good, but she didn’t get the hype. There have been movies and tv shows I’ve watched expecting them to be amazing based on the reviews but felt a bit meh about them, and I do always wonder if I’d watched them without hearing all the praise first that I’d of enjoyed them more.

LuckysDadsHat · 26/08/2024 11:50

I had wanted to see the show and then it came on Disney + so thought I would watch it on that before booking tickets. I lasted 20 minutes. That's it. Not for me at all.

blobby10 · 26/08/2024 11:50

My eldest son adored it - I didn't 'get' it at all and just assumed it was because I like the more traditional ones like Les Mis, Aspects of Love etc.. Glad I'm not alone!

Merryoldgoat · 26/08/2024 11:51

I think it’s absolutely sensational - but it’s ok not to love it (obviously) - people rave about Les Miserables and that leaves me completely cold.

LoneHydrangea · 26/08/2024 11:51

I’ve not seen it, but my colleague said she hated it.

snowlady4 · 26/08/2024 11:53

Only seen the filmed version. Absolutely loved it and dying to see it on stage. But there's not many productions I don't love!

AnyThoughtsWelcome · 26/08/2024 11:54

Am reminded of the scene in Curb Your Enthusiasm where Larry is given tickets by Lin-Manuel Miranda himself, and he falls fast asleep during the show 😆

Allywill · 26/08/2024 11:56

same. it was ok but i have no desire to see it again or for example to listen to the soundtrack in my car. i love miss saigon for example (and many many others) but hamilton- meh. we paid a fortune for tickets as well so i felt a bit guilty - even watched it again on disney plus to see if it would be better a second time - it wasn’t.

WickieRoy · 26/08/2024 11:56

I like it and often listen to the soundtrack, but I definitely find it's one I get more out of the more I listen and can appreciate the lyrics and plot etc.

(Have only seen the original cast version on Disney+ but going to the tour soon.)

Orangesarenottheonlyfruit · 26/08/2024 11:56

Oh my god! It's a bloody musical about the founding of a banking system by a sharp, philandering twat. It's very clever and all that but not exactly a riveting story.
Exactly the same as you op, I went with very excited teens and thought it was a bit mediocre.
I go to a lot of theatre, some of it weird and experimental, some more traditional and I didn't think it held a candle to some of the small, local productions I've seen.
I went to a party after and almost got lynched for saying it was less than brilliant....

WaltzingWaters · 26/08/2024 11:57

I love it. Excited to see it again on tour next year and listen to the soundtrack often.

Peakypolly · 26/08/2024 12:01

Saw it for the first time and was blown away. I went in with no prior knowledge of the plot or the style of presentation.
When it was shown on TV (during lock down I think) I was really excited to watch again but found it dull and turned it off.
When the recent tour came to our closest city, I was persuaded to take the DC. Inadvertently I had booked a captioned performance, and wow!, really understood it in a different way. Brilliant again.
Of the six teens with me,five of them loved it, one was meh.

LoremIpsumCici · 26/08/2024 12:02

Hamilton is a disgusting egregious manipulation of Black actors into an attempt to whitewash much of the antiBlack racism in US history & its founding slave owning racist, misogynist fathers, including Hamilton. Not a single character in the play is a free or enslaved Black person that lived then even though history is full of them. Hamilton, a slave owner living on his FIL’s mahoosive slave run plantation, was not an abolitionist, but Miranda presents him as if he were a white knight while ignoring all the Black abolitionists that fought for over a century for freedom.

Mskrabapple · 26/08/2024 12:02

I gave up halfway.
I can appreciate the skill of the cast, the writers, etc. It is very clever! I just found it difficult to understand the words (speed) and to follow what was happening (no background knowledge of the historical story behind the show) so I just couldn’t sit through it.

Shezlong · 26/08/2024 12:05

Of course it's OK to not like it, nothing is for everyone.
I don't like musicals personally but have a musicals-obsessed DD so have seen Hamilton with her. It is very one-note, I felt like I needed a lie down afterwards! It's so relentless, a total onslaught on the senses. But I enjoyed it, the staging was brilliant, the cast were very talented. After a decent interval I'd probably even see it again. Which, given the dullness of the story it's based on, is actually quite an achievement.
