Hamilton - anyone else not love it?

Honestly?

Have wanted to see this for a long time, mainly to see what all the fuss is about as, having searched up the story, thought it sounded a bit dull. However, I decided that all the rave reviews couldn't be wrong so when my teenage daughter suggested it (it's particularly highly rated amongst her age group), I jumped at the chance.

We didn't go into it cold, we had a rough idea of the story and had listened to the soundtrack so was familiar with the songs. I also quite like rap and was well aware that the whole story is told in rhyme.

Unfortunately, we really didn't enjoy it, too long and pretty boring tbh. There's no denying the talent of the cast, how they remember all those lyrics is impressive. Unfortunately, we had trouble understanding what they were saying much of the time so frequently got lost and confused. What we could hear and have read since was pretty clever though! We also had trouble knowing who was who as some actors played more than one part. I tried hard to like it, I really did. There are a few good songs but they're frequently repeated and got on my nerves after a while. I just found the whole thing a bit meh, as did my daughter. I didn't completely hate it, and shed a tear at the end (my daughter didn't, saying she didn't care about any of them!) but we were pretty relieved when it was over. I'm saying this as a regular theatre goer who generally enjoys musicals but this is one of the worst I have seen.

Judging by the enthusiastic reaction of the audience, we were in the minority. There are reviews echoing my thoughts, but again they are in the minority. There was a suggestion of "emperors new clothes" in some of the them and I wonder if maybe there's some truth in that as I certainly don't consider my daughter or myself unintelligent, but we just didn't get it!!

So disappointed 😥

Me...I loathed it!

I think it's one of those things that gets over-hyped as being 'amazing' by the media, and then people get on the bandwagon of pretending they agree...even though they've no sodding clue what it's about and can't stand it 🤣

Bedroomdilemmas113 · 26/08/2024 18:00

We are the opposite. Went because we ran out of things to watch in London and we now know the show from beginning to end and can sing and rap it (horrifically, think strangled cats but with copious amounts of effort!) all the way through.

Tried to watch the filmed version though and gave up a couple of minutes in. That was dreadful!

i absolutely do not pretend to enjoy it. This is an absurd thing to say.

twentysevendresses · 26/08/2024 18:13

@Bogfrog good lord what an overreaction 🤣

I didn't say EVERYONE (especially Bogfrog) I said 'people'...🤦‍♀️

Bogfrog · 26/08/2024 18:15

@twentysevendresses I know what you said and I just think it’s absurd. That’s all. Perfectly calm over here albeit baffled by your take.

Isn’t the filmed version exactly the same as the stage version?

HowardTJMoon · 26/08/2024 18:20

I quite liked Hamilton as some of the songs are really good and I loved the choreography. It is, however, a massive white-washing of Alexander Hamilton as a person. And the final song where LMM realised there was lots of stuff he still wanted to say so just jammed it all together really sucked.

It is, but minus the atmosphere.

It made a huge difference!

SelMarin · 26/08/2024 18:33

It's the least I've ever enjoyed a musical, and I've seen Cats.

Off topic, but what other musicals do you rate? I go to London four times a year and we are always stuck on what the best one is currently. Will be there this coming weekend and are booking Mean Girls, Last time we booked MJ which ended up being cancelled, so we didn't get to see that one.

Mean Girls is really good fun, I enjoyed it a lot more than I expected to! The best shows in town at the moment are revivals of classics - Kiss Me Kate (Barbican), Hello Dolly (Palladium) and the absolutely brilliant Guys and Dolls (Bridge). If you can only pick one, I'd go for Guys and Dolls as it's just phenomenal.

I'm also a big fan of Hadestown but that's another marmite one!

Thank you, was looking at guys and dolls as well this weekend !

I agree. For the reasons you said. And my DS was the same (and he was the one that chose it) he said it needed subtitles 😂

Great choice! Standing is incredible but exhausting (!) and it's just as good from the seats. The ones behind the wheelchair spaces are sold as restricted view but it really isn't because of the way the show is staged. Enjoy!

Katkens · 26/08/2024 19:28

I finally caved this month after four years of my now 14yo mithering to go when I had foolishly thought that seeing it on Disney Plus during lockdown would be enough!

She absolutely loved it, so much so that she was quite overwhelmed and tearful - in a good way!

As for me? Well - I thought it was excellent in terms of staging, choreography, technicality, all the performances - the singing was great and there was really slick, creative movement. In that sense it is top notch and well worth seeing if you’re a theatre lover.

But. I don’t care for the story. I love history but don’t find this extract of it interesting at all - in fact I thought it was pretty boring and as such I didn’t really care for the characters. I just wasn’t moved, and I like to be moved by theatre.

I’m glad I saw it live, it was worth the trip to have an extremely happy and grateful daughter! Except she now wants to go again - so it’s her dad’s turn next!

Meanwhile, I've bought the Hamilton biography in an effort to find out more and try to care and I have to say that when actually reading the story it's more interesting!

JudgementalRaccoon · 26/08/2024 19:43

@HowardTJMoon
‘Who lives, who dies, who tells your story’ is one of my favourite songs!

HowardTJMoon · 26/08/2024 20:01

Ugh, really? It starts off ok but just becomes a blur of words all jammed together. Compared to songs like Satisfied, Dear Theodosia or It's Quiet Uptown it absolutely leaves me cold.

JudgementalRaccoon · 26/08/2024 20:31

@HowardTJMoon
To be fair, I have a lot of ‘one of my favourite’ songs… Alexander Hamilton, My shot, Farmer refuted, Satisfied, Wait for it, Ten duel commandments, History has its eyes on you, Yorktown, Dear Theodosia, The room where it happens, Quiet uptown, Election of 1800, Your obedient servant, The world was wide enough … 😂
I like that it highlights Eliza, I like how it reprises History has its eyes on you, and brings together the narrative of time woven through the show, I like how it brings all the characters together at the end - it gives me shivers!

Duckswaddle · 26/08/2024 20:33

One of the best things I've ever seen, so clever. Seen it several times and know most of the words now :D

StMarieforme · 26/08/2024 21:40

Saw it last week after loving it for years. Loved it. We're all different.

Not just me who hated Cats then. Might have helped if I could make out what they were singing about mind. ..

Mapletreelane · 27/08/2024 14:20

I watched it on Disney over lockdown and it left me baffled and a little underwhelmed but my daughter loved it, and had the songs playing all the time, then we got to learn the story , saw it in London and have to say I loved it. LMM is a poet and musical genius. If it wasn't for wanting to see a new musical every time we go to London I'd go again. (Still doesn't top Les Mis though)
