Hamilton - anyone else not love it?

Honestly?

Have wanted to see this for a long time, mainly to see what all the fuss is about as, having searched up the story, thought it sounded a bit dull. However, I decided that all the rave reviews couldn't be wrong so when my teenage daughter suggested it (it's particularly highly rated amongst her age group), I jumped at the chance.

We didn't go into it cold, we had a rough idea of the story and had listened to the soundtrack so was familiar with the songs. I also quite like rap and was well aware that the whole story is told in rhyme.

Unfortunately, we really didn't enjoy it, too long and pretty boring tbh. There's no denying the talent of the cast, how they remember all those lyrics is impressive. Unfortunately, we had trouble understanding what they were saying much of the time so frequently got lost and confused. What we could hear and have read since was pretty clever though! We also had trouble knowing who was who as some actors played more than one part. I tried hard to like it, I really did. There are a few good songs but they're frequently repeated and got on my nerves after a while. I just found the whole thing a bit meh, as did my daughter. I didn't completely hate it, and shed a tear at the end (my daughter didn't, saying she didn't care about any of them!) but we were pretty relieved when it was over. I'm saying this as a regular theatre goer who generally enjoys musicals but this is one of the worst I have seen.

Judging by the enthusiastic reaction of the audience, we were in the minority. There are reviews echoing my thoughts, but again they are in the minority. There was a suggestion of "emperors new clothes" in some of the them and I wonder if maybe there's some truth in that as I certainly don't consider my daughter or myself unintelligent, but we just didn't get it!!

So disappointed 😥

I didn't like it, too samey all the way though for me. Was expecting it to be amazing given the hype!

Silvers11 · 26/08/2024 12:49

@Jobs4kids - didn't you post about this before? Discussed it on here before you went? Wondered whether you would like it? It sounds very familiar.

I loved it - sorry you didn't though

LameBorzoi · 26/08/2024 12:50

It went right over my head. I'm a subtitles person - I should have watched it on Disney + instead.

Soonenough · 26/08/2024 12:55

I saw it on the first weeks of the hype. There was to me a huge filler piece regarding Federal law that seemed so disjointed and felt like a last minute .
I think the main reason I found it overhyped was that I was not a teenager that knew all the songs and fancied Lin Manuel 😁

FoodieToo · 26/08/2024 12:55

I saw it on Wednesday night , we came over for 4 musicals from Dublin as we are obsessed 🤩!!!

I thought it was ok but wouldn’t rush back ! Saw Guys and Dolls the next day with low expectations and it was AMAZING !!!

Would not pay to see Hamilton again whereas I see others multiple times
.

deepstarfish · 26/08/2024 12:57

We loved it but did watch the Disney plus version first. However, I won't go and see it again, once in the West End was enough. I don't think it would necessarily be as good the second time and Hamilton isn't likeable and I think that makes it difficult to watch.

Uglyducklingswan · 26/08/2024 13:02

The first time I saw it I felt the same. Then I ended up watching the filmed version (with subtitles) on Disney+ and then I started to get the hype. Musically it’s so clever but you miss that on first listen as you aren’t sure who everyone is and you miss a lot of the fast rapped dialogue.

manythings · 26/08/2024 13:03

I was the opposite to you, I really didn't want to go, could not imagine sitting through a 3 hour musical about the American war of independence, but my daughter really wanted to see it, so I reluctantly went, dreading the idea of it, but I really loved it, thoroughly enjoyed it probably because my expectations were so low. Will see it a 2nd time for sure.

TheLizardQueen · 26/08/2024 13:07

I saw it in London and was completely underwhelmed, but a year later I saw it in Edinburgh and thought it was absolutely amazing!! I think I just didn’t “get it” first time. It’s hard to keep up and follow the story the first time around.

Icannoteven · 26/08/2024 13:23

I love Hamilton but when I saw it live I really struggled to hear the actors at all due to how loud the backing tracks were and their lack of clear diction.

My boyfriend, who had never heard the soundtrack/watched the Disney version was completely lost and didn’t get it at all. Cause of how much the backing track dominated. Reviews of the British show online all make the same point.

They really need to sort out their sound quality.

Thanks! Glad it's not just me, feel slightly less ignorant now! Yes, it's all down to personal taste. I much preferred Les Mis, absolutely love Evita (I know a lot of people don't), was meh about Wicked, both DD & I love Six and would see it again tomorrow.

The one I hated the most was The King & I earlier this year yet the friend I went with said it was the best she'd ever seen. Go figure!

Can I ask what about The King and I you didn't like OP? I haven't seen the stage version but would honestly just have assumed it would be good.

BeaRF75 · 26/08/2024 13:26

Sorry, I don't agree, OP. I've seen it three times, and loved it every time. I always get something new from it.
But we can't all like the same things - there are a couple of very popular musicals that I absolutely loathe!

Zanatdy · 26/08/2024 13:26

It’s one of the least favourite. I prefer plays these days to musicals - though I do love them. I saw Kathy & Stella solve a murder the other day, recommend it

VeryQuaintIrene · 26/08/2024 13:28

I think I found it impressive rather than enjoyable as such. I preferred Six (shorter and lyrically more understandable at first go.)

MissNowt · 26/08/2024 13:29

Until I read the thread I thought it was about the 70s Radio One DJ Diddy David Hamilton! Was thinking how weird to make a musical about his life.

theveryhungrybum · 26/08/2024 13:33

I took my boys the first time and we liked it, but didn't love it. Went again with DH and loved it! For me, it really helped to see it twice as I missed so much the first time. I'll definitely see it again when it's back in my area.

PuppyMonkey · 26/08/2024 13:42

I loved it right up until The Room Where it Happened then I thought it went a bit dull. I have to say my DDs and I hadn’t really got a clue what was going on for most of it and had to Google the real story afterwards.

Also we were on the second to last row at the Victoria Palace Theatre and there were 3 enormously tall blokes on the row in front of us who didn’t sit still the entire time. We were ready to murder them by the end of the show.Grin

Ronathediva13 · 26/08/2024 14:12

I absolutely love it, one of my top three musicals I've ever seen, and I see a LOT! The first time I went I took my partner and while he enjoyed it he wasn't blown away as it has so much going on and is a lot to take in. He came with me again about a year later and loved it second time round.

Did you see the tour or West End production? I've seen some less than complimentary reviews of the tour in comparison so wonder if that was a factor.

I'm not really surprised that it's not for everyone as it's very much one of a kind when it comes to musicals!

Merryoldgoat · 26/08/2024 14:38

I didn’t think anything could beat Come From Away and Hamilton blew me away. I went to see it ‘cold’ and had no trouble following it.

I still get really excited when I remember the build up to George Washington’s entrance.

babiesonthecarpet · 26/08/2024 14:40

I love musicals (including more obscure and contemporary ones) but I just don’t understand the hype for Hamilton. I didn’t enjoy it much either.

I really like both In the Heights and Encanto though, which are by the same guy 🤷‍♀️

skyeisthelimit · 26/08/2024 14:44

DD is 16 and we are seeing it next summer on tour. She is crazy about it, me not so much. She made me watch it on whatever platform it is on, and while it is entertaining, its just not my thing, and I absolutely love musicals.

I am only seeing it to tick it off the list really.

Cattyisbatty · 26/08/2024 14:45

I saw it when it came out, went with the family (teenagers then). I wasn’t that keen, but we watched in in Prime during covid and I preferred it on TV! By then I knew the songs/story in more detail though .

Nothing beats Come from Away for me.

I thought you meant the Scottish town for a minute.

Oh no, I have tickets to go in October. Was planning to bring my elderly parents - may need to rethink that....

Elderly parents will probably struggle with the speed of the lyrics - like much of hip hop it’s rapid fire with a great deal of verbal dexterity. My friends with hearing issues didn’t have the optimal experience.

If you can see one with the subtitles on a screen it will make a big difference to the enjoyment.

I think it’s slightly a victim of its reputation. It was a game changer when it came out and it’s an innovative approach to history.
