ASOS “fair use returns policy”

creepywoman · 25/08/2024 14:25

Did anyone else get this email from ASOS? Aibu to wonder whether they sent it to a select group of people?

I have the ASOS next day delivery service which has led to me ordering a lot from them. I’d say recently I’ve placed a few returns including a faulty item, so I wonder if I’ve flagged up.

I received it and haven’t ordered in 3.5y…

Noshowlomo · 26/08/2024 08:21

Just checked my junk and I had it too. I haven’t ordered much in the last year and returned about one thing

TheEuropaHotel · 26/08/2024 08:25

I've had the same email. It says it doesn't affect me too.

I don't order very often but when I do I quite often have to return as things don't look nice on 🤷‍♀️. i have heard people being cut off from clothes shops for returning things (not excessive numbers of returns either). I am
not sure what people are supposed to do - keep ugly clothes which don't fit, to keep the privilege of being able to spend money ?

There aren't lot of places to shop in person where they have enough stock either.

Meh, I suppose it will mean people spend less money, which is good for them and the planet, but surely not good for the shops. There margins must be absolutely tiny for this to be cost saving for them as it will surely lose them sales...

Sure but they will have worked out the level they are comfortable with and will be hoping to reduce returns. Perhaps stop people ordering more than one size and reading the measurements provided. Ordering two tops at a time to decide which one. Its much better to order one and then if you don't like that one return it and order the other.

But then you’ve still ordered 2 and returned 1 😵‍💫
Reading the measurements provided is often no help at all. It is exactly what it says - size guide - and usually an awful guide.
I don’t know what the answer is, but closing accounts and stopping people shopping isn’t the way to do it.

KreedKafer · 26/08/2024 09:21

The email went to all Asos customers. It’s not because you’ve returned a lot of things.

I suspect companies are clamping down on returns to:
A) stop people ordering for the sole purpose of creating sm content and then returning large orders with no intention of ever keeping the items, I imagine klarna has increased this with their pay in 30 because people don't even have to pay anything to do this and I imagine it's costly to companies
B) to stop people "playing the system" by ordering enough to take them over the free delivery threshold and then returning the excess at the company's cost with no intention of ever keeping the whole order

This is the difficulty with online orders, for people who genuinely fall between two sizes or who just like to see how something feels/looks before they commit to buying they could fall foul of a change but perhaps there's more to what flags an account in the new rules to account for genuine people.

starsalignedforyou · 26/08/2024 09:41

I didn't get the email and I'm a regular asos user 🫣🫣🫣

The issue I have is I often order from the brands on asos and it's impossible to know what size will fit so I often order two in one size and return one. I suspect my return rate is high.

Been a shopper at asos for years and am a premium delivery customer... If I end up with a restricted account I may have to shop elsewhere!

Moltenpink · 26/08/2024 09:50

Sounds like we all had the email then. I found it really odd that it doesn’t even describe what they consider fair use to be. Give us something to aim for!

RareBears · 26/08/2024 10:14

When it said it didn’t apply to me, I took it as not applying to me 🤷🏼‍♀️

I think there should be an exemption if you order a couple of sizes and return one. That’s unavoidable due to sizing and style inconsistencies.

starsalignedforyou · 26/08/2024 10:16

This is their fair use policy in the US, so I guess it'll be similar here in the UK when introduced?

I don't use them at all. I support the basis of a fair use policy though, not only because of 'influencers' (sad that anyone pays attention to them), but those who return things that have actually been worn for an event. So borrowing them without agreement as it were.

Have a law about sizes, at least if it says 30" waist or 30" leg length it should be exactly that. Basic sale of goods principles.

Noitsnotright · 26/08/2024 10:40

My friend had this with QVC and was threatened with having their account closed or limited. It seems strange as one of their main selling points, that they always push, is their money back guarantee. They say that you can use/wear and return anything. You also have to pay for postage both outward and return.
I don’t shop online that often but when I do, I end up returning lots of the order as it never looks like it did online and often doesn’t fit properly 🤷🏼‍♀️.

AnnaBella12321 · 26/08/2024 10:53

Do you think if you DIDN'T get the email about it, you're in that 'small group' it affects? (And nothing in junk)

Nervous now... I've technically returned full orders before as I've ordered just a pair of shoes, and had to return them as they sent me the wrong size. And I do return at least 50% of an order sometimes. So much stuff is either too big or too small, so I buy two sizes to try...

Oh dear

brimfulofpacha · 26/08/2024 11:00

I order and return a lot from asos and haven't had this! My reason for returning so much is that sizing seems to be all over the place depending on brands, and even within brands, one a size 12 swamped me but in another colour same style a 12 was very skimpy and tight. So it may look like I'm taking the piss but genuinely I'm not. I buy a lot from their Tall range so I hope they won't clamp down because it's so hard to find things for longer body and longer legs

ResultsHere · 26/08/2024 11:06

I return quite a lot and was panicking because I couldn’t find the email - then found it. Mine was sent on Friday

creepywoman · 25/08/2024 15:21

Hope so! It does seem a bit like a heads up

I dont why you're so worried about this? The way you're acting is like this is an email from the police or something. Are you generally very anxious? Just delete and move on.

If they do the same as PLT it won't be you deciding to shop elsewhere, it'll be them closing your account and prohibiting you from ordering from them. ☹️

I found your post quite rude frankly. Perhaps you should take your own advice and leave the thread.

I was blocked from ASOS for, I assume, this reason last year.

I kept the majority of my orders and spent thousands with them over the years.

I had a few faulty/damaged items that I was told to dispose of and refunded.

The last item I sent back was a pair of shoes in my size that I couldn't even get my foot into. And the blocked me! No reason given. Was the only clothing website I used so I wasn't happy but it has saved me money!

HeChokedOnAChorizo · 26/08/2024 11:31

I got the email too that said i wasnt affected. I only bought one thing and returned it (DD's prom dress, nothing like the picture and was not very flattering) so i have a 100% return rate 😂

starsalignedforyou · 26/08/2024 13:38

@lazylegumes definitely didn't get the email so maybe I'm on the naughty list!

To be honest this year I haven't shopped with them nearly as much, don't rate the quality of their own brand much and often I can find what I want on Vinted, even if I have to take a punt on the sizing! Will save me money as I won't pay the premium delivery subscription anymore or be tempted by their sales!

Yes but if the first fits you've done one order, no returns.
