Have I got enough food for this barbecue?

I haven’t hosted one before and I’m panicking I’ve under-catered.

There will be eight adults. One will arrive early evening and the rest mid afternoon.

Ive got 16 chicken legs, 12 sausages and buns, 12 burgers and buns, and one of those Big Daddy Aldi steaks. Plus cheese slices, onions and tomatoes. And halloumi and baby sweetcorn’s with butter.

Then for the sides I’ve got baby potatoes in a mint and lemon dressing, a capers salad, and a honey and mustard salad. Two cartons of coleslaw.

Then olives, cheese, crackers, sweets and popcorn for people to snack on.

Is it enough?

In theory, it should be enough, but I’ve underestimated how much people eat at BBQ’s. I would buy some more.

violetsparkle · 23/08/2024 19:43

It is hard to say. For some people that will be enough for others it won't. You could get some more sausages so there's 2 each but even then one thing I have learnt from mumsnet is that appetites vary and it's best not to assume.

sunsetsandboardwalks · 23/08/2024 19:43

I would buy more meat, more coleslaw/sides and something else for dessert that isn't sweets or cheese/crackers.

happygertie · 23/08/2024 19:44

It prob is enough but I am an over caterer. I would buy 16 of every meat option. I know my partner and his brothers would inhale 3-4 sausages before moving on to burgers.

I'm sure it will be fine though as you have some nice snacky bits

violetsparkle · 23/08/2024 19:44

Pavlova often goes down well at such events

happygertie · 23/08/2024 19:45

Maybe add chips n dips

StellaCruella · 23/08/2024 19:46

I would add an extra 4 burgers and 4 sausages - then you're grand

frenchfancy81 · 23/08/2024 19:47

I don't think it's enough meat; lots of adults would eat a couple of sausages for starters. Also think you should have a couple of desserts to offer- cheesecake and a big fruit salad or a roulade perhaps?

Favouritefruits · 23/08/2024 19:48

I think you have plenty variation but not enough of each ‘thing’ my husband wouldn’t touch the sausage but would want two burgers at least, he’d graze throughout the party but eat three all in one sitting! I’d only want the chicken but others may want a few hot dogs. If you buy fresh and leave them in the fridge you can always freeze stuff and eat it at a later date.

I am also a terrible over caterer and end up throwing so much in the bin after a party. I’m trying to avoid it without being not close to running out.

Someone is bringing a cheesecake so dessert is sorted.

Ah ok the trick here then is to do something like put the extra meat on after the first lot of meat. Rather than have it all ready at once. Then you can freeze what's not needed

TickingAlongNicely · 23/08/2024 19:51

One steak, even a big one, won't go far

Per person it's two chicken legs, one and a half sausages, one and a half burgers, and some steak, and you think it's not enough meat??!?

I was thinking the same. I’d probably ditch the steak for more sausages / burgers if your budget won’t stretch to steak for all, and keep the steak for a family meal.

No one is going to eat 1.5 sausages and 1.5 burgers so you need two of each and who are you to judge peoples appetites?

This is what I was working on. I should’ve said that one is vegan too so will have separate meat alternatives.

I thought that no way would everyone have a second burger and sausage, but some might have seconds of one or the other

I'd ask the others to bring something. You've got lots of things and shouldn't have to buy more. But I'd ask everyone to bring some meat or drinks, then you'll be sorted. But don't you go out buying anything else. You've done loads. BBQ is all about collaboration.

thesnailandthewhale · 23/08/2024 19:55

I'd up the sausages, maybe do some jacket potatoes (cheap and filling), bowls of crisps?

MaltipooMama · 23/08/2024 19:56

I would get:

Another 4 sausages and rolls
Another 4 burgers and buns
Maybe a pack of seasoned chicken wings as they're cheap and will add to the meat element
Maybe another of the big daddy steaks if you can (btw I never knew about those - I was just on the Aldi website though and will definitely be getting one of those!)

It will end up being more than enough but you could definitely store leftovers for the next couple of days, I always do this with leftover food from my bbqs! And it will cater to the annoying people (like me) who don't like hot dogs and/or burgers. I think if you can afford it, go all out for your first time hosting a bbq!

I second this!

If I'm invited to a bbq I don't show up empty handed. Even if it's a side dish or some drinks I like to make the effort to contribute and I imagine some of your guests would do the same.

Do you bring a big Greek salad? :)

But nobody is going to eat 1.5 sausages or 1.5 burgers, so you need to accommodate 2 per person, really. I'd also not really count the steak as it's barely going to go anywhere with 8 adults.

I personally wouldn't trust chicken on a BBQ.

beetr00 · 23/08/2024 20:02

Imho it's not enough @Rfthyhuj especially if it's an afternoon through to evening invite.

BobbyBiscuits · 23/08/2024 20:02

@MyBigFatGreekSalad definitely! haha, by your name I'm guessing there's one dish you definitely boss!
Yeah, it's really nice for everyone to muck in and kind of take the pressure off a bit. OP your selection sounds lovely though.
I like to do a lentil and beetroot salad with red onions and feta as a side.
