Have I got enough food for this barbecue?

I haven’t hosted one before and I’m panicking I’ve under-catered.

There will be eight adults. One will arrive early evening and the rest mid afternoon.

Ive got 16 chicken legs, 12 sausages and buns, 12 burgers and buns, and one of those Big Daddy Aldi steaks. Plus cheese slices, onions and tomatoes. And halloumi and baby sweetcorn’s with butter.

Then for the sides I’ve got baby potatoes in a mint and lemon dressing, a capers salad, and a honey and mustard salad. Two cartons of coleslaw.

Then olives, cheese, crackers, sweets and popcorn for people to snack on.

Is it enough?

I think more sausages and burgers too, stagger the cooking and freeze what isn't used. It's so difficult to predict how much of each thing people might want.

I am going to google this huge steak! I've not heard of it and I think it would go down well with my family.

OldTinHat · 23/08/2024 20:31

Personally, I'd only be interested in the sausages. I wouldn't eat the other meat.

I think you need to get some more.

PS. What time shall I come round?!

BurbageBrook · 23/08/2024 20:32

If you buy too much meat you can always BBQ in batches and then stop and freeze any leftovers when people seem to be getting full.

Is it not the 454g one? (Haven’t seen it, so looked it up online). That’s just over 50g/2oz per person. I definitely think people would want more than that if they like steak.

No, it isn’t.

No, it isn’t.

Ah, if it’s this one then I’ve changed my mind - that would be big enough unless you’ve got someone coming that is going to load up on steak at the expense of everyone else

We have a lot of bbqs and I always over cater 🥹. My advice is to buy more than plenty of sausages / burgers / chicken and buy fresh. Stagger sending out to cook so you don’t end up with loads of left over cooked meat. Any meat not cooked can then be frozen for future meals in the week.

i also have standby things like nachos crisps and dips all have a good shelf life if not used.

I was at a bbq a couple of weeks ago and the hostess panicked that there didn’t look enough deserts (there were 🙄) but she opened a tub of quality street - went down a bomb, so I’ve made a note to have those in too,

I think it’s enough meat but I’d get tortilla chips, guacamole, salsa for people to snack on before you cook. It’s easy and will fill them up a bit beforehand. I would also bbq veg. Like thick slices of courgette, hispi cabbage (delicious in wedges with oil and seasoning), padron peppers etc.

Doingthework · 23/08/2024 21:22

You could get a couple of halloumi cheeses and cherry tomatoes and break up the meat with some kebabs Also a baked bbq Camembert with crusty bread Is a good bbq stater and fills people up.

Rfthyhuj · 23/08/2024 23:29

Okay well I think I’ll get some charcuterie ham, hummus and breadsticks to put out earlier along with the cheeseboard, olives, sweets and popcorn.

I’ve told people to arrive from three so we’ll be eating between four and five I suppose. I might cook a couple of quiches that I can put out and people can eat them if they’re hungry later on.

I think you need more meat. The only actual meat you're cooking on there when they arrive is a sausage and a burger each, plus whoever shares the steak. Personally I'd do more meat on a BBQ.

Shade17 · 24/08/2024 10:49

Get some more sausages and burgers and keep them in the fridge then you don’t have to worry about being in a fit state, they can just go in the freezer the following morning.

jackstini · 24/08/2024 11:17

It will definitely depend on how long they are there and how much they drink!

Few more burgers and sausages plus garlic bread to pad it out

Bag of freezer meatballs can be cooked in 3 mins and popped on skewers with halloumi and cherry tomatoes
No worries if not used

Don't put mint on the potatoes - completely ruins the taste! 🤮 have mint sauce on the side as an option
(& butter, cheese & mayo☺️)

TheKeatingFive · 24/08/2024 11:36

It sounds like tonnes to me, but perhaps I'm an under caterer 😱

If in doubt though, buy more sausages. Cheap, quick and freezable if you don't use them.

Rfthyhuj · 25/08/2024 11:33

Well I got some ham for a charcuterie and two quiches.

What was left was both quiches, six sausages, two burgers, half the potato salad, maybe 1/5 of the caprese salad and seven chicken legs. I also forgot to put the salad out. The steak went down a storm.

OneTC · 25/08/2024 11:44

I'd do more sides, corn on the cob, watermelon, some noodle salad, bananas

OneTC · 25/08/2024 11:44

Just noticed it's happened 😅

Cold
Chicken at a bbq?

How did it go op?

soupfiend · 25/08/2024 12:28

Im always over catering and end up with food wasted and going off. I would say its enough

SatansBobbleheadedDashboardOrnament · 25/08/2024 12:35

Edit: Whoops, just saw the date on this. Sounds like it went well.

Add a few more sausages and some tortilla chips and dips, then you're grand.
I think you'll find a lot of your guests will bring something to contribute, I wouldn't show up empty handed.

Doingthework · 25/08/2024 12:47

Hi op glad it went well. I stole an idea from a local Brazilian bbq restaurant. I noticed they brought the cheaper sausages and meat out first then the sirloin came out when everyone was full.

to keep the cost down I started trying to fill people up with burger and sausage and chicken legs. Then at the end being out the steak, prawns salmon as a show stopper at the end although people are beginning to catch on lol
