Have I got enough food for this barbecue?

I haven’t hosted one before and I’m panicking I’ve under-catered.

There will be eight adults. One will arrive early evening and the rest mid afternoon.

Ive got 16 chicken legs, 12 sausages and buns, 12 burgers and buns, and one of those Big Daddy Aldi steaks. Plus cheese slices, onions and tomatoes. And halloumi and baby sweetcorn’s with butter.

Then for the sides I’ve got baby potatoes in a mint and lemon dressing, a capers salad, and a honey and mustard salad. Two cartons of coleslaw.

Then olives, cheese, crackers, sweets and popcorn for people to snack on.

Is it enough?

The guests will definitely bring drinks.

It’s my first barbecue but I host fairly regularly and always panic and hugely over-cater and it all goes in the bin, because frankly I’m in no fit state for freezing things by the end 😀

Can't you send some of it home with your guests?

FoxtrotOscarKindaDay · 23/08/2024 20:03

FWIW cooked BBQ sausages can be frozen and make a nice change to toad in the hole for a quick dinner.

Soluckyinlove · 23/08/2024 20:04

I'd add garlic bread, mainly because I love it. Or maybe prawns and/or veg on skewers. I must admit I'm an over caterer, too though. I'd not cook everything at once, and if you don't use it.....freeze it.

I was thinking the same. I’d probably ditch the steak for more sausages / burgers if your budget won’t stretch to steak for all, and keep the steak for a family meal.

It’s a 28oz steak. Even if everyone wanted a bit, excluding the vegan, it’s 4oz each. Surely people wouldn’t expect a full 8oz portion at a barbecue?

Chuck it in the freezer in a big plastic bag then sort it out and label it the next day. Or put in the fridge and freeze next day.

But nobody is going to eat 1.5 sausages or 1.5 burgers, so you need to accommodate 2 per person, really. I'd also not really count the steak as it's barely going to go anywhere with 8 adults.

I personally wouldn't trust chicken on a BBQ.

The chicken is cooking as we speak and will be served cold.

If you cut it up fine but it will smell sooooo good

TheTripThatWasnt · 23/08/2024 20:09

I catered for 8 adults last weekend and had 18 sausages, 8 lamb kebabs and 1 giant steak. It was plenty of meat. There was some left for lunch the next day. I had potatoes, coleslaw, a green salad, a bean salad and a tomato salad on the side. And big bowls of tortillas.

If you're worred, get another pack of sausages and just have any leftovers the next day.

And I'd do chicken legs in the oven - they're hard to do on the BBQ (making sure the middle is done and the outside isn't burnt). Can always bung them on the BBQ for a few mins to get the charred finish.

No one is going to eat 1.5 sausages and 1.5 burgers so you need two of each and who are you to judge peoples appetites?

Yes, but some people will eat one burger some will eat two. Same with the sausages. It seems like plenty of meat to me. The 1.5 is an average.

Slice it thin with chimichurri drizzled over as an appetiser

Well, it depends how long they're there for. If it's just a couple of hours, probably not, but lots of BBQ's last from early afternoon until evening, so it's effectively two meals.

HaveYouSeenRain · 23/08/2024 20:16

Some veg for BBQ? Courgettes, peppers?

Seren78 · 23/08/2024 20:17

I think its enough 😋

It wouldn't be enough for a BBQ here. Are the people going big eaters ? Here my lads would eat 2 burgers a heap of sausages none of us would eat chicken legs there's not much on them, we'd have skewers, the women nearly the same prob one burger but loads of sausages and hot dogs, I wouldn't eat burgers as don't like them so would eat chicken and sausages and steak (definitely more than one) and fish etc

It's hard getting it right with different appetites and tastes, even my mil eats a load of salmon and sausages and she eats like a bird.

The sides wouldn't appeal, the mint and capers 🤮 I don't know why people have coleslaw, it's at every BBQ and no one eats it, may do there, just can't get into putting it on my hot dogs but you know your guests.

If definitely up the meat.

circular1985 · 23/08/2024 20:18

I think it sounds plenty, especially with all the extras.

AntarcticOcean · 23/08/2024 20:22

Definitely 2x sausages and burgers per person minimum.

Is it not the 454g one? (Haven’t seen it, so looked it up online). That’s just over 50g/2oz per person. I definitely think people would want more than that if they like steak.

sunseaandsoundingoff · 23/08/2024 20:25

That is less than I would do and we regularly do BBQs for 8 adults.

Wrap some jacket potatoes in foil and put them in the coals, they're very filling and cheap.

Don't throw the leftovers away, they are perfectly good the next day. Or stick them on Olio.

ThinWomansBrain · 23/08/2024 20:28

buy an MN chicken
It will feed 5,000 and your problems will be solved.

🤣🤣

How long are they staying? We usually have a 'second round' at a BBQ

Ineedaholidayyyy · 23/08/2024 20:31

I would add some more sausages and burgers, so in theory everyone could have 2 of each. I wouldn't touch chicken at a BBQ. Better to have cater for more , you can always hold back a pack of sausages and burgers and then only cook if required, if not, you can freeze the meat and use it for another night so it won't be wasted.
