Described as Amazonian - is this an insult?

So many times throughout my adult life I have had my figure being described as 'Amazonian' to my face. I never really understood what it meant, and it just happened again today. I actually asked the person this time what it meant, and they sort of fumbled about looked embarrassed and looked flustered and kept muttering things like, 'big' and 'strong presence'....and it all got a bit awkward. So I'm just curious - is this an insult? a compliment? Ive tried to google it and I'm none the wiser.

Does it mean I look overweight?

I thought it meant that you were tall.

redalex261 · 17/08/2024 15:40

In my head it means tall and strong, not fat!

RichardsGear · 17/08/2024 15:40

I always understood it to be shorthand for a tall, strong, athletic, almost imposing woman.

cupcaske123 · 17/08/2024 15:40

In my opinion an Amazonian is a female warrior. She would be tall, strong and muscular. I wouldn't find that insulting.

User364837 · 17/08/2024 15:41

I would think if it as a compliment and have used it as such, probably not to someone’s face but when describing them.

similar to statuesque for me

NooNakedJacuzziness · 17/08/2024 15:42

I think of Naomi Campbell and Gisele Bunchen when someone says Amazonian so you're in good company!

PresidentBarklett · 17/08/2024 15:43

To me it's always meant tall, athletic and strong. Not fat.

As a fat, short woman I'd be thrilled to called Amazonian 😅

BiscuityBoyle · 17/08/2024 15:43

Tall and athletic looking woman. Not an insult and certainly not fat.

StormingNorman · 17/08/2024 15:43

It means tall and strong. You must know this already.

heldinadream · 17/08/2024 15:43

Yep, Warrior Woman! I would take it as a massive compliment but at 5ft 3 and shrinking it's never coming my way.

SonicTheHodgeheg · 17/08/2024 15:43

Tall and strong - think Brianne of Tarth if you watched Game of Thrones

bigkahunaburger · 17/08/2024 15:44

Oh good! Well chuffed. I'll take that then. Haha.

Im tall - but in no way strong or athletic. I'm super weedy.

To me it means tall and athletic, a bit strapping maybe. But not fat. It makes me think of Xena, Warrior Princess.

Nope. And Im not remotely strong or strong looking so it doesn't make sense.

Yip Naomi Campbell, Hannah Waddingham...strong tall women. I'd say very much a compliment ☺️

Offcom · 17/08/2024 15:46

If I describe a woman as Amazonian it’s a compliment for sure (not that I would say it to someone’s face, but… like I said it in a text to illustrate the stature of the Team GB women’s eights rowing team when they collected their medal alongside their petit male cox at the Olympics)

Coming For You Wonder Woman GIF by Max

Wonder Woman is Amazonian so...

heldinadream · 17/08/2024 15:47

Maybe you're not as weedy as you think? Or maybe you have the presence of a Warrior Woman, which overrides the lack of physicality? Either way I'd be pleased with it.

It certainly implies some kind of strength and immovability.

bigkahunaburger · 17/08/2024 15:48

Im tall - 5'10" - MAHOOSIVE norks (32 GG), but huge chunky arms and chunky legs (which are covered in cellulite, completely untoned) - but tiny waist. Im very wobbly, but my BMI is 23.

So not really 'warrior woman' looking at all in my view. So I don't fit what you are all describing at all - but I'll take it for sure. Wish I was athletic - far too lazy and like crap food too much.

It's usually tall and athletic woman. Not overweight.

Ponoka7 · 17/08/2024 15:49

If you aren't physically amazonian, then it means you have a powerful presence, I'd take it as a compliment.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 17/08/2024 15:53

I would assume you delivered parcels. 😉

BunsenBurnerBaby · 17/08/2024 15:53

Definitely compliment IMO. Tall, strong, takes no shit, slightly scary.

Offcom · 17/08/2024 15:54

I think the Amazons of legend cut off one boob to make them better archers so in that respect you’re not Amazonian.

I once saw Gwendolyn Christie (as someone as mentioned Brienne of Tarth) striding down Bond Street in eight-inch stilettos – she looked incredible

THisbackwithavengeance · 17/08/2024 15:56

Lol OP, stop humble bragging. 5'10" with low BMI, small waist and big tits with the faux Am I Fat Question? Well obvs not
