Described as Amazonian - is this an insult?

So many times throughout my adult life I have had my figure being described as 'Amazonian' to my face. I never really understood what it meant, and it just happened again today. I actually asked the person this time what it meant, and they sort of fumbled about looked embarrassed and looked flustered and kept muttering things like, 'big' and 'strong presence'....and it all got a bit awkward. So I'm just curious - is this an insult? a compliment? Ive tried to google it and I'm none the wiser.

Does it mean I look overweight?

Gisele would be Amazonian, Kate Moss wouldn't.

Gisele has Amazonian hair but is probably more slim hipped than Kate Moss!

This is what I picture

I'd take it as a complement, Amazonian women are considered to be confident, beautiful, tall, large breasted. They are portrayed as warrior like in many arts.

EscapingTheseFeelings · 17/08/2024 17:47

Definitely a compliment.
All the pictures on the thread are my idea of an Amazonian woman too. Tall, perfect figure, nice legs, good hair, attractive face, warrior-like.

Nanana1 · 17/08/2024 17:49

yeah, you have to have a nice face

HashBrownandBeans · 17/08/2024 17:49

I get called this all the time and it’s usually by shorter men, in a slightly negging tone.

I am 6ft, heavy but athletic. They are 100% terrified and fascinated and I’ve had it my whole life.

5128gap · 17/08/2024 17:51

I think it means a woman who looks big strong and powerful. Should be a huge compliment, unless you believe the epitome of femininity is to be small and fragile, as some people do. So how its meant and how its recieved are pretty subjective.

Definition of Amazonian is the Dutch athlete Lieke Klaver.

She looks incredible, very strong but unmistakably female.
I think you sound great too, OP, all of us shortarses would love some of your height. And I bet you're not nearly as wobbly as you think.

LGBirmingham · 17/08/2024 17:53

A definite compliment! Look up about the Amazon women from ancient Greek times. They were flipping awesome

Describing you as Amazonian is a compliment... and, therefore, doesn't have to be true. The Amazons were fierce, beautiful, warrior women from Greek mythology. To describe someone as Amazonian relates more to their... aura or stature or confidence. In mythology, Amazons famously lopped off one breast to make it easier to draw their bows for battle. I doubt the complimenter was suggesting your chest looks lopsided.

Butwhybecause · 17/08/2024 17:57

I'd love to be Amazonian instead of short and a bit overweight.

I just need stretching

twentysevendresses · 17/08/2024 17:58

RichardsGear · 17/08/2024 15:40

I always understood it to be shorthand for a tall, strong, athletic, almost imposing woman.

Same! I would love to be thought of as Amazonian - talk, strong, athletic. What's not to love??

However, I'm 5'3 and a 'bit dumpy'. I was once called 'chunky' which is REALLY not what you'd want to hear 😵‍💫🤣 Sadly it's true so I had to just suck it up 🤦‍♀️🤷‍♀️

Yes and it's about being powerful. Definitely a compliment.

Waterboatlass · 17/08/2024 18:00

Tall, athletic and strong. Curvy or broad rather than a willowy fashion model build

bigkahunaburger · 17/08/2024 18:00

Nanana1 · 17/08/2024 17:44

I look nothing like the amazonian women pics. My figure is more Cristina Hendricks (with chunkier arms and cellulite. Its nowt like these women at all. I sadly do not have her face.

Oh I'd fucking love to be described as amazonian! Usually the word "goddess" follows. Tall, leggy and strong women I think of.
Models get it loads and so do the tennis stars, especially Serena and Venus Williams, although they're just terrific at everything, I think the phrase "gods favourite" was invented for them. Just so talented and beautiful. Utterly glorious.

I always think of amazing women when I hear amazonian.
I adore gwendoline Christie (if I had to choose any woman to look like, her 100%, I think she is sensational) and I think amazonian would be used to describe her. Her style is also just phenomenal. I'm a fangirl if you can't tell 😂

I'll trade you your amazonian for my dumpy or as my kids like to call me, squishy 😂

Ineedaholidayyyy · 17/08/2024 18:03

You only have to type in amazonian women into Google to know what it means, whether you see that as compliment or not is up to you.

frecklejuice · 17/08/2024 18:03

I'd love to be called Amazonian 😂

In my mind it means tall, strong and athletic looking with amazing legs!

KimKardashiansLostEarring · 17/08/2024 18:04

I always think of it as tall and broad. But aren’t people from the Amazon the opposite???

Yes the Williams sisters are very good examples of Amazonian women. I don't agree with people who cited Naomi Campbell. She's too willowy.

My teen calls me 'chubby' and when younger would say they love my 'boob pillows' when snuggling, and my 'squishy arms'. My youngest used to love to play with the under part of my flabby arm. LOL.

I consider Hannah Waddingham Amazonian, so definitely a compliment!

Bobbotgegrinch · 17/08/2024 18:11

Ooh, I can answer this one with a Reddit post I saw earlier this week.

If they had pictures in the dictionary, then this woman would be it.
https://v.redd.it/xu1gf6ik0ghd1

Basically it just means tall, but with a frame to match. Take a photo of a woman and remove everything from the background so there's nothing to judge height on. Some women, like Karen Gillan or Zendaya, you can still tell are tall. But someone like Gwendolyn Christie, you wouldn't be able to tell, because all of her other proportions are in line with her height.

Whether it's meant as a compliment or not, well that's down to the person saying it. All the women in the Reddit post above I'm pretty sure would say it's a compliment. A lot of men would too, but some who are uncomfortable with women will be making a subtle dig.

WeeOrcadian · 17/08/2024 18:19

NRTFT

I have a friend who I describe as Amazonian

She's fairly tall for a woman, curvy in all the 'right places' and I wouldn't fuck with her if you paid me

I mean it as a compliment and I'd take it as such
