Described as Amazonian - is this an insult?

bigkahunaburger · 17/08/2024 15:39

So many times throughout my adult life I have had my figure being described as 'Amazonian' to my face. I never really understood what it meant, and it just happened again today. I actually asked the person this time what it meant, and they sort of fumbled about looked embarrassed and looked flustered and kept muttering things like, 'big' and 'strong presence'....and it all got a bit awkward. So I'm just curious - is this an insult? a compliment? Ive tried to google it and I'm none the wiser.

Does it mean I look overweight?

Im tall - 5'10" - MAHOOSIVE norks (32 GG), but huge chunky arms and chunky legs (which are covered in cellulite, completely untoned) - but tiny waist. Im very wobbly, but my BMI is 23.

So not really 'warrior woman' looking at all in my view. So I don't fit what you are all describing at all - but I'll take it for sure. Wish I was athletic - far too lazy and like crap food too much.

Maybe what you see as chunky, others see as muscular/well built/powerful?

Whenever I've seen it used it's a compliment, usually in relation to height.

I always get reminded of either Wonder Woman or a Futurama episode where there's a whole planet of strong, tall, women - though in Futurama they're portrayed in a much more jokey prehistoric way, which tbf isn't the norm for most people when they use the word OP in my experience so I wouldn't be worried!

FayCarew · 17/08/2024 15:57

Tall and athletic-looking. Not an insult.
Do you get bored of people telling you that you are tall?

LauderSyme · 17/08/2024 15:58

I was going to say if you aren't athletic and muscular, people must be referring to your voluptuous curves. Then I scrolled down a bit further and ... yep!😁

jellybe · 17/08/2024 15:58

Wonder Woman is meant to be ana Amazonian woman. I'd take it to mean you are tall but athletic looking/ strong.

PaminaMozart · 17/08/2024 16:00

Amazonian makes me think of that blond, tall, fighting strong woman in Game of Thrones

BruFord · 17/08/2024 16:01

I’ve said to my DD (19) that she’s an Amazon, because she’s tall and athletic compared with diminutive me. She can easily pick me up! It’s definitely a compliment.

Bilbonne · 17/08/2024 16:02

It's because you are tall, usually like Wonder Woman type build.

THisbackwithavengeance · 17/08/2024 15:56

Lol OP, stop humble bragging. 5'10" with low BMI, small waist and big tits with the faux Am I Fat Question? Well obvs not

Im not humble bragging. I dont think Im fat (I am wobbly and cellulitey though but I know Im not technically overweight. As I said, my arms and legs are VERY chunky). But I have had these comments and they confused me. So I wondered if perhaps it meant I looked overweight - even though I know I'm not. I've also had comments that Im 'big-boned' and 'big-framed' and my teen calls me 'chubby'. And it sometimes makes me doubt myself, that maybe I look something that I'm not. Sometimes big tits can make you look overweight even when you aren't. So forgive me for sharing my insecurities!! FFS.

Anyway, thank you to everyone for reassuring me that it wasn't an insult. It is always said by men by the way, and this latest one was a guy I was on a date with and I wanted to rule out that it wasn't negging. So yeah, I wanted to know what it meant.

I always think tall and athletic and strong. I’d probably describe a lot of athletes as Amazonian. I don’t think it’s a bad thing.

Zow · 17/08/2024 16:08

bigkahunaburger · 17/08/2024 15:44

Oh good! Well chuffed. I'll take that then. Haha.

Im tall - but in no way strong or athletic. I'm super weedy.

If you're super weedy, then why are people calling you Amazonian?

Are you VERY tall, like 6 ft 4 or something? If you're a woman - that is very tall.

EDIT, just saw you are 5 ft 10. If you are weedy and 5 ft 10, you're not Amazonian IMO. Not sure why anyone would say that. Maybe they don't know what the word means. Sounds like you're just tall and slim.

DreamW3aver · 17/08/2024 16:13

You can't possibly have tried to Google it and be none the wiser, who are you trying to kid, the first result that comes up is a picture of Wonder Woman and then loads of explanations. What exactly did you type into Google?

GoldenLegend · 17/08/2024 16:14

It means tall and well built but I would call out anyone who said this for making very personal comments!

Spaniellover2 · 17/08/2024 16:15

I would love to be described as Amazonian. Instead, I am an elderly - ish apple and often get ‘Aww bless …’ when I speak. No one would speak to a warrior woman like that.

blackrabbitwhiterabbit · 17/08/2024 16:16

I used to get called this- can't say I liked it, and I'm only 5'7 ffs.

Bilbonne · 17/08/2024 16:16

I'm 5'10 and I wouldn't be offended by it but it is generally said by smaller people, it doesn't mean fat

Butchyrestingface · 17/08/2024 16:17

@bigkahunaburger

It's because you're tall. I'd take it as a compliment. I'm a smurf so anyone over 5ft 5" looks 'Amazonian' to me.

At least you've never had to deal with the indignity of someone attempting to rest their beer glass on your head in a pub, with the immortal words:

"Sorry, I thought you were a table." 🙄

I wondered if anyone had mentioned “death by snu snu”

Are you athletic looking?

I do get a bit tired of comments about my height/appearance. Like Im some sort of freak. I have actually always wanted to be the cute tiny type - like all my friends! I always feel like Hagrid compared to them when we are out.

I've been called Amazonian too OP - I'm not especially tall (5'7"), and definitely veer towards fat (currently a size 14, just) but also have big boobs and a small (ish) waist.

I take it to mean sexy/curvy/look-like-I-could-break-your-neck-with-my-impressive-thighs. I'm definitely not athletic and never have been - though my pe teacher wanted me to throw discus for school 🙈 so maybe it's a shoulders thing too? Mine are fairly broad - thank god as I need them to hold my tatas up.

Straightouttachelmsford · 17/08/2024 16:23

I did a PT course (short, old and fat) and my partner for gym sessions is what I'd call Amazonian. 6ft and solid, I trotted around after her in total awe!

AtomHeartMotherOfGod · 17/08/2024 16:24

Amazons in Greek mythology were a race of female warriors. They cut off one tit, apparently, to be able to fight or shoot arrows better. In that mythology they were well known as being as fierce as male warriors and I think bested several, although I forget whom.

The queen of the Amazons that I remember most is Penthesilea.

Unless you've had a mastectomy and were talking to someone who enjoys the Classics, I would say it means you are toned, strong, tall, athletic, formidable. Wonder Woman is supposed to be an Amazon isn't she?

BruFord · 17/08/2024 16:24

@PuppiesProzacProsecco 🤣🤣. This describes my DD, she’s a runner and her legs are incredibly strong!

Devilsmommy · 17/08/2024 16:25

cupcaske123 · 17/08/2024 15:40

In my opinion an Amazonian is a female warrior. She would be tall, strong and muscular. I wouldn't find that insulting.

This has always been my take on it too. Definitely a compliment

I think this is it! I definately look like I could break a man in my massive thighs or smother him with my norks lol. Im as weak as piss, extremely unfit, but Im 'sturdy' so I reckon thats it. Ugh.
