To ask whose right of way it was? (with pic)

Two cars pulling into the same road from two roads which end opposite each other. Car A is turning right and Car B is turning left. Both had to wait for a few cars to pass in the direction they were travelling and then both pulled out at the same time, very nearly colliding.

Whose right of way was it?

YANBU - Car A’s right of way
YABU - Car B’s right of way

I believe it’s B as they did not have to cross traffic

Glassoak · 14/08/2024 09:59

B

BumBumCream · 14/08/2024 09:59

I think B had the right of way.

excesssoil · 14/08/2024 10:00

The car turning left has right of way as it doesn't cross traffic.

CalamityClam · 14/08/2024 10:00

Your photo looks like you are in the U.K., where cars are driving on the left of the road.
This is relevant! The car that has right of way is the one that DOES NOT have to cross the road - so that’s B.
Car B is just ‘turning a corner’ whereas Car A crosses another lane.

blobby10 · 14/08/2024 10:00

Car B as they didn't have to cross the line of traffic.

spicedemerald · 14/08/2024 10:00

B has right of way in this scenario. A is turning right therefore has to give way to everyone else.

DappledThings · 14/08/2024 10:00

B, they are turning left and not crossing the other lane.

People are often quite hesitant in that situation.

Lucyfoot · 14/08/2024 10:00

Yes, B. What happened?

Goodadvice1980 · 14/08/2024 10:00

Car B has priority 🚙

Anonym00se · 14/08/2024 10:00

100% B

Sirzy · 14/08/2024 10:01

B for the reasons everyone else has said

longdistanceclaraclara · 14/08/2024 10:01

B.

Which one were you?

TheCrenchinglyMcQuaffenBrothers · 14/08/2024 10:02

As everyone else, definitely car B

KimKardashiansLostEarring · 14/08/2024 10:03

B but in reality in the uk there’d be an annoying ‘you go, no no no, you go, go on, oh ok I’ll go, oh no right ok you’re going’ situation 😤😤😤

Ivehearditbothways · 14/08/2024 10:03

Absolutely car B. We drive on the left side of the road here. When turning left, you don’t cross traffic and you have right of way over someone turning right. Even if the side roads are facing each other or not completely lined up, the car turning left has right of way to join the highway.

KimKardashiansLostEarring · 14/08/2024 10:03

longdistanceclaraclara · 14/08/2024 10:01

B.

Which one were you?

Presumably A judging by the voting options!

Ivehearditbothways · 14/08/2024 10:05

And the photo is from the road car A was in, so I suspect OP was cad A.

If you were OP, you need to remember that turning right means crossing over lanes in this country. You always give way to someone turning left, or someone going straight. If car B was coming straight across to enter your side road then you’d also need to wait for them to clear the road so you could turn right onto the main highway.

init4thecats · 14/08/2024 10:07

B - someone's not going to be happy with the responses of this post!

Oreosareawful · 14/08/2024 10:07

I agree with everyone else, Car B only has to give way to the right, so as soon as nothing is coming from that direction they can go. Car A should give way.

AngeloMysterioso · 14/08/2024 10:08

So I was actually Car B- and applied the same logic as everyone else here, that I was already on the left hand side of the road and not crossing any lanes of traffic, so I go first. Car A pulled out at the same time and very nearly hit the side of my car, the bloke driving screamed a load of expletives at me and spent the next few miles driving so far up my arse his bonnet was almost touching my boot.

Technically there is no 'right of way' - the Highway Code refers to road users 'having priority' in certain situations, or 'vehicles giving way' eg on roundabouts.

But common sense would say the car turning left has priority in this instance.

AngeloMysterioso · 14/08/2024 10:12

After it happened I had a vague memory of my driving instructor telling me to imagine a crossroads like that being a roundabout, in which case he’d have been coming from my right and have right of way. But I could be imagining that!

CallThatCloudy · 14/08/2024 10:13

B,B,B. However, the only very slight mitigation would be that the junctions are slightly offset, so the asshole other driver might think he has some kind of priority. But only a knobhead would apply that thinking, so B.

LammasEve · 14/08/2024 10:18

I drive at a similar junction daily and would always say B has priority (even though I'm usually car A). But so many people stop slightly short of the junction that it's hard to tell if they're letting another driver go first which IMO isn't safe to do.

In OP's case, car A was obviously being driven by an entitled arsehole who needs to learn to drive!
