To ask whose right of way it was? (with pic)

Two cars pulling into the same road from two roads which end opposite each other. Car A is turning right and Car B is turning left. Both had to wait for a few cars to pass in the direction they were travelling and then both pulled out at the same time, very nearly colliding.

Whose right of way was it?

YANBU - Car A’s right of way
YABU - Car B’s right of way

B they are turning left

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 14/08/2024 10:21

I got a mark against me in my driving test from this exact situation. Driver B waved me on because I was a learner.

Apparently we should both have gone at the same time. because B is turning left they would be far enough in advance of A to not collide.

Fluufer · 14/08/2024 10:22

Car B has right of way, but both cars should have been aware of each other and driven with more caution.

BlindedByGrey · 14/08/2024 10:22

B has right of way.

Gizlotsmum · 14/08/2024 10:24

B although if A was at the junction first then I would probably have let them go. I would be cautious as B in case A went at the same time/slightly before me as technically they would then have right of way

HisNibs · 14/08/2024 10:38

B definitely has the right of way...
Priority on Crossroads - aDriving

However since car A was being driven by a bell-end, in his head he has priority. This is why I have a dash cam installed (front and rear)

Lifeinlists · 14/08/2024 10:45

B obviously, but the Highway Code has a special exception for entitled arseholes!

BrioNotBiro · 14/08/2024 10:46

As everyone else says, B has priority as they are not crossing traffic. But I'd have waved the other driver out as a courtesy as it's harder for him to make the turn (or I would have done before I knew what a rude prat he was!)

AboutTwelve · 14/08/2024 10:47

Yes, B.

Sympathies OP - it's infuriating and upsetting when someone else fucks up but still thinks they're right and then is quite aggressive in letting you know! Yep, entitled arseholes are often shit drivers who don't understand the rules...😡

IMustDoMoreExercise · 14/08/2024 10:50

AngeloMysterioso · 14/08/2024 10:08

So I was actually Car B- and applied the same logic as everyone else here, that I was already on the left hand side of the road and not crossing any lanes of traffic, so I go first. Car A pulled out at the same time and very nearly hit the side of my car, the bloke driving screamed a load of expletives at me and spent the next few miles driving so far up my arse his bonnet was almost touching my boot.

I would always let car A go first because it is much harder for them to turn right than it is for you to turn left as they need both lanes to be clear.

I have never really thought about who has the right of way in this situation. I just do what is the kindest thing to do.

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 14/08/2024 10:52

There was another thread about this recently. In theory, B has priority. But in practice, instead of trying to think about who has priority you do what we Brits are good at doing and behave as if there's a queue. You establish eye contact with the other driver and the one that was there first goes. If there's a queue of traffic waiting to get on then you take it in turns.

Yes, I agree with this. Even if I was B and got there first, I would let A go first as it is much more difficult for them to turn right.

JemimaTiggywinkles · 14/08/2024 10:56

These threads come up quite often and most people say car B. However, there's no example in the Highway Code to support this. Personally, I generally let the other car go first regardless of which position I'm in - I rather wait an extra minute or two than risk crashing.

floridaidea · 14/08/2024 10:57

If you were A and had been sat there for 5mins waiting to turn right and B just rocks up and turns the second it's clear; then I can see why A was irate. Shouldn't have driven up your backside though.

And this is why there are so many accidents. Just follow the Highway Code so we ALL know what to do on these occasions rather than trying to read other people's minds or guessing. It's been written for a reason.

EDIT - agree with others, B has priority.

OK but Highway Code section 168.c does say male drivers must treat women as if they're incompetent idiots so YABU, sorry

BlindedByGrey · 14/08/2024 11:03

Christ. It’s not kind. Just follow the rules of the road

timenowplease · 14/08/2024 11:06

B. As my instructor used to say 'You have no rights when turning right'

Beautiful3 · 14/08/2024 11:07

B, because they're not cutting across traffic. Ignore car A, he's an arsehole who expects to be let out first everywhere he goes.

Poppysmom22 · 14/08/2024 11:10

B they didn’t have to cross a live lane

No it doesn't. You are more likely to have an accident doing what the OP did if the person in car A does not know the Highway Code. And the OP did almost have an accident which proves my point.

I would tell the person in car A that I was letting them go. If I was in car A I wouldn't just go like the person in car A did in the opening post. I would wait to see if car B was allowing me to go.

So if the road that car B was on was queued up, are you saying that A should just have to wait there until every single car has cleared. They could be there for half an hour. The frustration of this is what causes accidents.

LadyGaGasPokerFace · 14/08/2024 11:12

Car B has the right of way. Car A was an impatient arse and needs extra driving lessons.

Exactly. Not condoning what car A did at all, but it is this sort of behaviour which leads to agression and accidents.

Just be polite on the road, even if you think that you have the right of way.

😂

I was going to say "The male driver" but you rather beat me to it.

(Agree with everyone else - it's B, so you were right and he was wrong - and driving dangerously)

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 14/08/2024 11:18

I was going to say the one who got there first has priority, so blimey, I’m well out of touch. Has the Highway Code changed or have I always been wrong?
