AIBU to shower twice a day

Bearpawk · 06/08/2024 19:34

Just chatted to a friend and she was quite astonished that I often shower 2x per day in summer.
She said she only showers every second day at the most since lockdown. Each to their own.
My reasoning:
I exercise in the morning a few days a week and get very sweaty - showering after that is a non negotiable. That's usually when I wash and dry my hair as it gets pretty wet with sweat.
Usually have a bowel movement in the mornings and don't feel clean with just paper (sorry tmi not a poo troll) so tend to shower most mornings regardless of exercise.
I walk to work every day and get a bit of a sweat on up the hill, my office has no ac so even though I wear natural fabrics, by the time I get home I can feel a bit 'clammy'.

I HATE getting in to bed dirty so I'll usually have a quick shower before getting into my pj's and settling down tor the night.
Showers are usually very quick - a rinse with a rub of the pits and bits. and I use natural soaps etc. so not too harsh on my skin.
Am I bonkers ?

I have a bath once a week.

Even in a leap year?

EverywhereYouGo · 06/08/2024 23:04

Oooh, a competitive hygiene thread. 😴

You've said each to their own, but then feel the need to question your own showering habits on here. 🙄

TheNextStep24 · 06/08/2024 23:04

I couldn't shower twice a day because I simply don't have time to!
When I shower, I wash all my body really thoroughly. I shave my legs and underarms. I exfoliate my body. I wash my face. Then I exfoliate my face. I wash my hair. Twice. Then I put on a deep conditioning hair mask and leave it for 5 mins before rinsing off. My shower lasts about 20 mins. Then I get dried and smother my legs and arms in body moisturiser. Then I use rich hand cream on my hands. Then I exfoliate my feet with an electric foot exfoliating thing. Then I put foot moisturiser all over my feet. Then I put serum on my face. Once that's soaked in, I put face oil on my face. Then I brush my long hair out and put hair serum through it. Then I lightly blow dry my hair.
That's my shower ritual. It takes an hour.
I couldn't possibly do this twice a day.

Singleandproud · 06/08/2024 23:04

Your friend is grim.

Every morning + evening if have gotten sweaty.

Depends where you live though I'd imagine, I live on the coast with a cool breeze, travel by car, generally not physically close to others during the day, so generally don't need two showers.

When I go to London and travel on the tube which is generally very hot and busy etc or ofcourse if the weather is hot or we've been to the beach or I've exercised then it's a double shower ( shock horror, sometimes it's three if it's very hot like the heat waves a few years back)

Also depends on what you call a shower, I only have 5 minute showers whereas others go for 30 mins plus and have a long self care routine compared to my speedy one.

@SnipSnipMrBurgess if you got shit on your hand would you prefer to wipe it off with a tissue or would you wash it off with soap and water ?

I use toilet roll, find it helps immensely with not getting shot on my hands!

dontstopmenowimhavingagoodtime · 06/08/2024 23:06

*shit

Butchyrestingface · 06/08/2024 23:13

I am for realz typing this from my operational nerve centre (AKA the bath). I know in Mumsnet World having a daily bath is like wallowing in a coal mine’s worth of your own filth - and probably lower middle class to boot.

But the ❤️ wants what the ❤️ wants.

Exactly. Toilet paper does get you properly clean

Of course I would wash it off. I do things with my hand that I don’t do with my arse. Paper gets your arse clean if you wipe properly.

I'd recommend using tissue to wipe your ass instead of your hand

Mjmum10 · 06/08/2024 23:48

Ynbu, I have oily skin and hair, and a side effect of my medication is that I sweat easily, so I need to make more effort to stay clean than someone without these problems. I don't think anyone should be criticized for being clean unless it's very excessive

Yourdemonsyourproblem · 07/08/2024 00:24

She's filth

pinkappleorpineapple · 07/08/2024 00:36

I dread to think how many showers I would have some days if I needed to shower after every poo! The IBS symptoms are real.

But generally I just shower when I feel like it. I don’t feel ‘yucky’ as some posters describe it just because I have got to the end of the day, nor does Tube travel have me running to the shower.

And sorry OP but what do you even accomplish in a 20 second shower? Though I am intrigued and will set a timer tomorrow.

ButWhatAboutTheBees · 07/08/2024 01:27

I take a shit in the shower. Saves a lot of time ;)

Not this thread again… Soon somebody will come along to say that anyone not showering on the hour every hour is a smelly pig, as per usual.

Or that washing more than on the eve of a full moon will leave you with damaged skin and psoriasis

Hucklemuckle · 07/08/2024 01:33

TizerorFizz · 06/08/2024 21:28

No wonder we get water shortages. Once a day and only twice if you have exercised. Three times a day is a bit much.

I have a shallow bath (like really shallow in the morning to wash my face bum and pits.

A shower and hair wash after my workout and then in summer if I'm sticky, a quick 2 min shower before bed.

In terms of the environment it's less about how often and more about how long.

People being all judgemental whilst taking a 45 min shower every two days are using far more water

Hucklemuckle · 07/08/2024 01:35

PrincessofWells · 06/08/2024 22:15

There's not much hope for the planet is there?

Depends how long people are showering. Not how many showers.

I've known people to take one 45 min shower a day. I have no idea what they are doing.

That's going to be more water used than I am using for half a week in my 2 washes a day

Hucklemuckle · 07/08/2024 01:37

Bearpawk · 06/08/2024 22:36

@FawnFrenchieMum it is definitely enough time to hose myself down. I'm not THAT big. Or maybe you count to 20 really quickly 😂

Counting to 20 is not the same as 10-20 seconds

Seriously. 10 seconds????

Most people don't wash their hair twice every day it generally doesn't need a double wash when you wash it daily.

And no one I know exfoliates their face and body DAILY???? don't even shave daily. Usually a couple of times a week.

Theoldwoman · 07/08/2024 02:18

Surely you don’t need to ask on here? You do you, and I do me.

I shower twice a day, we live in a very warm climate, have dog that are exercised twice a day, go to the gym, garden.

This is a really, really funny response.
You had me laughing, on so many levels!😂
YOU may not do this, but I do.
You do you. I'll do me.
I'm intrigued that you claim 'most people' don't wash their hair twice when they wash it. Out of interest, how do you know this? Of the millions of adults living in this country, please tell me how you know 'most people' don't wash their hair twice?
I always wash my hair twice, always have.
And I'm amused by the fact you have stated 'no-one' you know exfoliates daily. Can I ask, how do you know this? Seriously, how do you know what your friends and family are doing in the shower? Because if you asked me what my friends and family are doing in the shower, I literally couldn't tell you. I have no idea. And I'm certainly not asking them what they do in the shower. So how do you know what the people you know are doing in the shower?
Furthermore, even if you do watch your friends and family whilst they shower in order for you to know they are not exfoliating daily, the point is, that I DO exfoliate daily. So what's it to you?

Ilovecleaning · 07/08/2024 07:05

‘Bowel movements’ and ‘pits and bits’ - just TMI 🤮

To be fair, your routine is something most people might do once a week if even. How long does all this take?

Fine if you enjoy it, though I would say we all need to be mindful of the environment.

The subject appears with some frequency on MN....

…that, and how often you wash your sheets, towels etc.
