People on trains are awful

Just to caveat I know this isn't everyone.

So far in 2.5 hours.

Someone listening to the news on their phone without headphones. I could hear every word clearly about the stabbings and there were young children in the carriage too.

Several people coughing, spluttering and sniffing galore.

People allowing their children to shout, scream, sing loudly.

People shoving the blinds down without checking it's ok when it's a shared window (ok this one is pretty minor).

Someone playing videos loudly.

The toilets have pee all over the floor and they stink.

People with feet on the seats.

I could probably think of more. 🤢

People are inconsiderate

AuCo44 · 30/07/2024 20:45

I would have asked the people listening to the news or to videos to please use their headphones.

Not worth the agro. I've had someone threatening to bash my head in for similar about 5 years ago. I pick my battles now.

I use a long cane. I’m sight impaired.
i have only used the train twice in the last year and on the first journey a passenger spotted that I may have had huge issues with the huge gap (upwards) between platform and the train and moved to help me at the door from off his seat
i didn’t need help as i have a small amount of useable fuzzy vision and cane helps but it really made me happy that there are men like that in the world.

JamSandle · 30/07/2024 20:48

I definitely think they've gotten worse. Maybe it's rose tinted glasses. It feels like there's always music/videos/calls played out loud.

opalescented · 30/07/2024 20:48

Several people coughing, spluttering

What exactly is it you think these people should do?!

Were you in the quiet carriage?

Cover their gobs for a start.

No, not a quiet carriage but that doesn't mean play videos, news, shout, scream, sing at your leisure.

Asking people to use their headphones just doesn’t work. They want you to listen to their shite.

That's great 😁

Fair enough you hadn't specified they were coughing in an unhygienic manner

How would using headphones help someone who is coughing/spluttering??

You've edited that. And at no point did OP mention they were coughing/spluttering without a tissue. I deliberately didn't mention the sniffers as yes they should be blowing their noses.

opalescented · 30/07/2024 20:52

Maybe you could get some earplugs? Would that help?

Yupthatsit · 30/07/2024 20:53

Apologies that I didn't write chapter and verse.

Or wear headphones themselves?

Sethera · 30/07/2024 20:53

On train today, man next to me listening to something involving teenagers swearing a lot. I'm not offended by swearing but the females were doing that vocal fry thing and it was really irritating.

ATenShun · 30/07/2024 20:54

I spend a lot of time travelling around the Country on trains. You are correct some people are so ignorant and self absorbed. If I wanted to listen to whatever it is being played by fellow passengers, I'd of chosen to. No I don't think your child screeching at the top of it's lungs is cute or amusing.

I was on the Settle line about a week ago. A family of around 12 (grandparents down to kids) got on. They dominated the entire carriage despite being spread out and allowed the two girls of around 8-10 to make a horrendous racket.

At the time I had a brainwave. An app that connects to screens at the front of the carriage that you could message anonymously.... egcan the noisy family who got on at appleby shut your kids up. 😀

I've got some but they only mute it down and don't block out the crap entirely.

It makes a difference. Coughing and spluttering can't be helped. Doing it unhygienically can.

Then you risk missing any announcements on the train.

Ear plugs don't really reduce noise that much.

Sidebeforeself · 30/07/2024 20:56

Earplugs don’t solve the feet on seats problem either
