People on trains are awful

Just to caveat I know this isn't everyone.

So far in 2.5 hours.

Someone listening to the news on their phone without headphones. I could hear every word clearly about the stabbings and there were young children in the carriage too.

Several people coughing, spluttering and sniffing galore.

People allowing their children to shout, scream, sing loudly.

People shoving the blinds down without checking it's ok when it's a shared window (ok this one is pretty minor).

Someone playing videos loudly.

The toilets have pee all over the floor and they stink.

People with feet on the seats.

I could probably think of more. 🤢

Totally get what you are saying OP. This afternoon, I was on a tram in Manchester. A young couple were openly vaping… a group of teens were doing the same with feet up on seats. Before this, there was a girl listening to music without headphones. Two days ago, also on the tram, there was a couple with a baby having a loud argument with lots of f words being used loudly. No one says anything because of the fear factor (understandably). No respect and no consideration.

Yellowbananasarebetterthangreen · 30/07/2024 21:00

Yes earplugs are a thing........ and yes Im a fan of my "loops" - but decent earplugs that actually work are expensive (and easily lost!) And why should I use earplugs (which give me a headache - why cant others learn to behave in a less inconsiderate manner.
Its more and more common nowadays for people to be inconsiderate arses in public.
If you want to watch a video/listen to music in public - put earphones on!

Have a tissue handy in case you need to blow your nose.
Dont be annoyingly loud when taking mobile phone calls etc
Its really not that hard.

StillSmallVoice · 30/07/2024 21:03

I hate all that stuff, especially as I have long Covid and get sensory overload. Still rather get the train than drive for all sorts of reasons, environment not being the least of it.

I have recently got some loop earplugs. They are expensive, the jury's out about whether they are worth it, but they do make a difference and don't take up the space which proper noise cancelling headphones do.

SlightlygrumpyBettyswaitress · 30/07/2024 21:04

I commute daily. Headphones cut out 85% of agro to be fair.

Earplugs don’t solve the feet on seats problem either

Of course they don't. Why do you think I think they do?

Sidebeforeself · 30/07/2024 21:14

@opalescented I don’t think you think they do? I was just saying their are other ant social thinks people do

Sidebeforeself · 30/07/2024 21:15

There not their !

Sidebeforeself · 30/07/2024 21:16

Christ I cant type tonight..things not thinks!!

Summertimer · 30/07/2024 21:17

Our journey back from Cornwall was largely ok. The only surly elements were grumpy trolley staff and some me random passengers who said we were in their seats, we weren’t

Why reply to me then? I suggest earplugs for the noise and you tell me that won't sort out feet on seats. Of course it wouldn't I'm not stupid.

Fifferfefferfeff · 30/07/2024 21:19

What infuriates me is that the guards/staff on the train don't do anything about it. Surely it's their job to ask people to behave?

I was stuck on a delayed train to Edinburgh recently for hours with a group of men holding a party, with loud music and beer, which upset my child, who was very tired and trying to read or sleep. Some people asked the men to be quiet, but the men laughed.

I was on a train last year where a group of teenagers was holding a party in the aisle, so loud that we didn't hear an important announcement about a diversion and had to get another train, meaning a five hour delay. Guards did nothing shen I complained.

lilyathena · 30/07/2024 21:26

People listening to films etc on their phones without headphones seems to me to have increased in the last year. I find it deeply annoying. The only thing that seems to block it out for me if I'm working on a train is putting white noise on my headphones. I probably am easily irritated and noise sensitive. I usually sit in the quiet carriage but invariably someone gets on who either doesn't realise or doesn't care.

Chocolatedinosaurswithicecreampudding · 30/07/2024 21:28

People who should be banned from public transport :

anyone watching anything on their phone / tablet with the volume up without headphones

anyone who thinks their bag is more deserving of a seat than a human being especially if they tut when you dare to say ‘excuse me please’ to sit down.

anyone who takes phone calls in the ‘quiet carriage’

anyone who thinks their bike deserves to take up all the space in the aisle so no one can get past rather than using the bike compartment

anyone who doesn’t move from the disabled accessible area when a wheelchair user gets on and needs the space

anyone who thinks their toddler needs a seat on a full train when they could go on their parents laps (considering that under 5’s aren’t paying for a seat’ )

anyone who eats food with their mouth open and crunching like an animal or slurps loudly on milkshakes or coke…

anyone who is able bodied but doesn’t give a damn that the elderly gent, pregnant lady or disabled person with crutches and a guide dog may need a seat much more than they do - LOOK up from your phone and show a little humanity

anyone who sits in reserved seats on long distance trains that are not there’s - hello - reservations are free but you need to do them - not sit in the seats of those who have been bothered to be organised.

yes I am a regular commuter and yes these things drive me insane!!!!

JohnTheRevelator · 30/07/2024 21:31

opalescented · 30/07/2024 20:52

Maybe you could get some earplugs? Would that help?

Why should it be up to the rest of us to wear earplugs/headphones to block out their shite? Surely the onus is on THEM.

See it's this sort of stuff. There's just no need. People could just be nice.

I get you OP - hell is other people and all that. Unfortunately, a few scumbags seem to ruin it for everyone.

Definitely more entitled and selfish attitude now

shellyleppard · 30/07/2024 21:36

If someone keeps sniffing near me I offer them some tissues 😂😂 it drives me mad

AFmammaG · 30/07/2024 21:37

YANBU. Add to that I did a journey recently on the way there 1/3 trains cancelled. Same on the way back. The journey cost over £100. I did successfully apply for compo afterwards but the whole journey was incredibly stressful. We lost our seat reservations on the cancelled services, the ones afterwards were packed and after being directed to carriage C by the guard (as unreserved seating), there were several arguments where people claimed they had booked seats in that carriage.

Sidebeforeself · 30/07/2024 21:40

@opalescented I didnt reply to you!

Jeannie88 · 30/07/2024 21:43

Was on a long train journey today and every passenger around me was fine. It was a quiet coach and there was one annoying giggling girl but that was it. Others have been less pleasant. X

ChockysChimichanga · 30/07/2024 21:47

I don’t commute regularly any more, thank god, but one incident sticks in my mind.

I was standing in the middle of a crowded carriage and a young woman was sitting with her legs crossed. Her foot kept hitting my leg and it was really annoying so I leant down and said ‘please can you move your legs, your foot keeps hitting me’. She had headphones on so of course didn’t hear and I
had to repeat except I didn’t say please the second time though I was still polite. She actually said to me ‘say please’ in a really rude tone. So I just told her I’d already said please but she didn’t hear me. She then made a big deal of uncrossing her legs, only to recross them a minute later.

It just summed up everything I hate about other people and tube travel.

Women painting their nails.

Men spritzing on half a bottle of cologne.

Drunk loud men.

People eating garlicky fish.

Fare dodgers who kick off and hold up the train when caught.
