To book Tenerife?

Fancied a cheap short break in November with my boyfriend. We looked and found a great deal for Tenerife. So we booked it.

Family are not happy given recent events with Jay Slater there.

I have been to Tenerife 3 times before, we are staying in a quieter resort in Puerto de la Cruz and I have tried to ease their minds by saying there is no need to worry as we won't be up any mountains, getting involved in drugs or staying in the party resort.

We plan to chill out most of the time and maybe go to the zoo.

AIBU to book a holiday here?

Your family are weird

ReframeFeelings · 21/07/2024 11:52

Yes YABU. You will obviously fall into a ravine.

NewUser1111 · 21/07/2024 11:52

Obviously it’s fine and your family need to calm down!

Would they rule out Scotland because hill walkers die there?

Would they rule out Cornwall because people get swept out to sea and drown?

FrenchandSaunders · 21/07/2024 11:53

Very odd behaviour from your family. Ignore. Unless you’re both 16

Your family are being quite ott. There is no more danger than anywhere in Tenerife. What happened to Jay Slater was tragic and we don't know the full circumstances but it certainly doesn't look like being in Tererife was the deciding factor, more being alone with unsuitable clothing and equipment in a mountain environment at night....possibly under the influence of drugs or alcohol.....that is an very specific and unusual set of hazards. Are your family normally so anxious about you?

The only time I'd second guess a holiday destination is following civil unrest / terrorist attack.

The life choices Jay made are unfortunate by the sounds of it but unlikely to impact your break in the slightest.

I live in a seaside town, drugs are rife, stabbings increasing but not something I (or the many holiday makers) seem to take into account as I am not interested in drugs nor a part of gang culture which is where the stabbings appear focussed (most parts of the UK are the same now too).

No, I have travelled to 3 other places in the last year and I have not heard a thing! It only seems to be this one in which I think the fear mongering in the media has a lot to answer for

Laughing my guts out. Sorry.

That's what you should do with your family as well.

Eleganz · 21/07/2024 12:01

Completely fine, unless you are planning to go wondering off in the middle of nowhere.

maudelovesharold · 21/07/2024 12:03

I thought you were going to say they were worried about an anti-tourism vibe from the local population. No, I wouldnt avoid somewhere because of an unfortunate accident having occurred there some time previously. Everywhere has a history!

2024intake · 21/07/2024 12:05

I went to Puerto de la Cruz last year. It’s lovely!

Quite distasteful taking the piss out of a dead lad, but each to their own.

SurferDog · 21/07/2024 12:12

It looks like he fell.

There are drugs everywhere.

Your family sound really weird.

It's not their business where you go on holiday with your BF.

boredybored · 21/07/2024 12:13

I'm guessing your family haven't travelled much . That's so ridiculous. He went off road in the dark when drunk and he was an idiot. He paid the ultimate price for that . It doesn't mean Tenerife is any
More dangerous than anywhere else !🙄🙄

Saltedbutter · 21/07/2024 12:13

Oh thats great to know!

I have usually went to the south of the island so this will be a first for me up north. We wanted somewhere a bit less commercialized than the hustle and bustle as we aren't into party scenes etc

And from the OP too!

Such a silly thread.

itsgettingweird · 21/07/2024 12:15

Your family are weird.

I managed to live there for many years, work there, have a child there etc without so much as taking a drug or falling off a mountain.

And I've been to Masca many times!
