AIBU to think that people that scoop are greedy

Scooping up all the dip and leaving fuck all for anyone else?

I'm a dipper, I don't like too much dip on whatever I'm dipping.

I went to a bit of a party yesterday with several dips (among other things), hummous, tzatziki, salsa, cheese dip etc with crisps, breadsticks, tortilla chips and the like.

What I noticed was people, men taking great scoops of dip and eating it all in next to no time, leaving none for anyone else.

I tried to take some hummous and put it on a plate but a few of them finished off tubs in what seemed like a few bites 😡Like locusts 🙄They weren't drunk either, food was served fairly on.

AIBU to think you don't do this when sharing a buffet/meal with other people? Fortunately, there was no double dipping going on!

You don't know what other people are going through. Perhaps they're dangerously ill from hummus deficiency yet are bravely putting on a brave face. I expect they've got undiagnosed depression, dementia and are ND as well.

I'm definitely a scooper but only in

my own house where I share equally with my scooper boyfriend.

Social events I behave myself.

There are always selfish people at buffets, piling up their plates, meat eaters eating all the vegetarian food etc etc

I dunno what the solution is.

Lopine · 15/07/2024 09:12

Isn’t the done thing at a party to put a little bit on your plate?

ScoopOrDip · 15/07/2024 09:13

Yeah do what you like at home but not when supposedly 'sharing'.

This reminds me of You’ve Got Mail when Meg Ryan has a go at Tom Hanks for scooping up alllllll of the caviar that was meant to be a garnish 😂

You'd think but some people we're standing around/near the table and taking a tortilla chip and scooping from the pot rather than putting some on a plate and walking away.

So they were also blocking access to the table.

I love dip, although I can't stand Hummus so I'd leave that. I may be guilty of scooping the sour cream and chive dip though.

UnpoachedPears · 15/07/2024 09:17

Urgh I hate sharing dips. Some people actually double dip, at a party!!! Disgraceful.

Caerulea · 15/07/2024 09:17

Boils my piss! DH is terrible for it if we share a bag of crisps with some dip. Ds2&3 now get dip for themselves & are quite protective of it lol despite being very sharing with anything else. But dip? You don't fuck about with dip 🤣

HcbSS · 15/07/2024 09:18

OMG this is not something I have ever really thought of but now you have mentioned it YES, you are right and it is totally bloody selfish.

ErrolTheDragon · 15/07/2024 09:19

Urgh. At parties, dips should always have a teaspoon in them and people should take a modest amount onto their own plate.

Workaholic99 · 15/07/2024 09:21

The civilised thing to do would be to spoon some dip on ones plate!

alwaysmovingforwards · 15/07/2024 09:22

The lesson here is to get to the shared buffet quicker.

Hangerslip · 15/07/2024 09:22

I don't think anyone at a party should need to be polite with the quantities of anything, if there wasn't enough, the host got it wrong.

However, I really don't understand why dips have become such a buffet staple. Messy and unhygienic and unless spoons are provided, you really need to stand by the pot. Surely you're not walking away between each dip?

paywalled · 15/07/2024 09:25

The caviar is a GARNISH

But not so quick you’re the first in the queue. You need to aim to be about third or fourth, use the spoon to put some on your plate and then go. Any later than that and you risk no dip or double dipping.

I actually think the hosts might the unreasonable ones though if they didn’t put spoons out. But I don’t like the idea of different dipping materials contaminating the dip.

No I was putting some on my plate, walking away, when I went back having expected everyone else to have done the same there were people just standing there eating from the table and pots ratehr than plates, and eating it ALL.

yanbu but I steer well clear of the dips at buffets.
Even the possibility of someone having double dipped makes me feel queasy.
Not usually a germaphobe

maudelovesharold · 15/07/2024 09:33

I’m not keen on uncovered buffet food. People talk, laugh and cough while they’re queueing/hogging the table and minute amounts of spittle will be landing on the food!

PaleSunshineOfHope · 15/07/2024 09:34

This is why dips are best eaten alone, straight from the pot, in front of the tv.

CactusMactus · 15/07/2024 09:35

Anything shared should be put on a plate.

Isn't there a stat about men not washing their hands.... penis hummus.

I remember one Christmas dinner at my brother in law's house:

A buffet system, like a carvery.

I get to the front of the queue: no Yorkshire puddings and 3 roast potatoes - which I duly shared with my sister in law who was in the queue behind me.

This was about 12 years ago, and I'm still not over it!

But these scooping dippers aren’t civilised, so in the interests of humanity it would behove the OP to take the spoon and use it to scoop out their eyeballs. Drastic yes, but would serve as a warning to others and eventually the scooper instinct gene would be lost to mankind.

(OP would then need to find a clean spoon but that would only take a matter on moments.)

MrHarleyQuin · 15/07/2024 09:45

I would take away a spoonful on my plate. My bugbear is double dippers and people who leave crumbs in the dip.
