AIBU to think that people that scoop are greedy

Scooping up all the dip and leaving fuck all for anyone else?

I'm a dipper, I don't like too much dip on whatever I'm dipping.

I went to a bit of a party yesterday with several dips (among other things), hummous, tzatziki, salsa, cheese dip etc with crisps, breadsticks, tortilla chips and the like.

What I noticed was people, men taking great scoops of dip and eating it all in next to no time, leaving none for anyone else.

I tried to take some hummous and put it on a plate but a few of them finished off tubs in what seemed like a few bites 😡Like locusts 🙄They weren't drunk either, food was served fairly on.

AIBU to think you don't do this when sharing a buffet/meal with other people? Fortunately, there was no double dipping going on!

I remember one Christmas dinner at my brother in law's house:

A buffet system, like a carvery.

I get to the front of the queue: no Yorkshire puddings and 3 roast potatoes - which I duly shared with my sister in law who was in the queue behind me.

This was about 12 years ago, and I'm still not over it!

I would have been raging,

Onemoreterm · 15/07/2024 09:47

Double dipping at a party/gathering/function is grim.

People who take stuff and then put it back - just yuk, yuk, yuk! Many people do not have good hand hygiene 🤢

curtaintwitcher78 · 15/07/2024 09:49

I'd rather a scooper than a double-dipper.

sashh · 15/07/2024 09:51

THis is why sensible hosts use disposable shot glasses for dips.

You don't know what other people are going through. Perhaps they're dangerously ill from hummus deficiency yet are bravely putting on a brave face. I expect they've got undiagnosed depression, dementia and are ND as well.

First post wins the thread.

To be fair, I do crave hummus when mildly anaemic - which happens to me occasionally - because chick peas are full of iron!

As a quick disclaimer I make my own and don't go around pinching other people's. Dip thieves are shameful😁

yanbu but I steer well clear of the dips at buffets.
Even the possibility of someone having double dipped makes me feel queasy.
Not usually a germaphobe

Yep. Nuts and bombay mix are off the menu for me too.

HowcanIhelp123 · 15/07/2024 09:57

I grew up with Monica, if you don't dip fast you don't dip!

That sounds like a bad catering issue.

Stop going to cheap-ass parties where the host unreasonably rations the dips.

If I am offering things like that I always put spoons in the bowls. First saw it in bars in Holland.

Or greedy people that don't give a toss about people behind them. It's not on hosts to have unlimited quantities of food, its on people to choose a reasonable portion, leaving some for others and going back for seconds if there is any left after everyone has been served.

These people will take more than their share however much food there is, because they feel entitled to it.

I'm definitely a scooper but only in

my own house where I share equally with my scooper boyfriend.

Social events I behave myself.

There are always selfish people at buffets, piling up their plates, meat eaters eating all the vegetarian food etc etc

I dunno what the solution is.

Also a scooper.

I'm a dipper, I don't like too much dip on whatever I'm dipping.

I'm the opposite I really dislike the texture of a dry nacho etc. So there's definitely a case of personal taste preference happening there.

I think ideally at a social gathering you'd provide little spoons to encourage people to put some on a plate but tbh as long as they're not double dipping then I'm OK with it.

not unlimited, but certainly more than "just enough"...especially when its the cheap stuff like roasties and yorkies.

It wasn't rationed. The pot it came in from the shop was put out. Are they supposed to buy 10 pots of each dip? Confused

The hosts shouldn’t need to have unlimited food but I agree with pp, it’s bad catering not to stagger the popular foods.

Well, yes, the pots contain 2/4 servings?

Presumably they didn't put out one bag of crisps and expect it to serve 20 people?

No, you decant it into smaller bowls and stagger laying them out.

They're supposed to buy enough dip for the number of people they invite. Or cut back on the invites to only invite a number they can afford to cater to.

And honestly, if they're just plonking the supermarket pot of dip on the table..

Beth216 · 15/07/2024 10:12

That sounds like a bad catering issue.

We are a family of over caterers and this happened last Christmas too. Greedy BIL had his plate piled like a mountain and practically mowed people over to get to the front. Other BIL pissed off at his behaviour finally announced how much of each he had taken on his first run when greedy BIL said ‘I hope you all left seconds’ when the last person sat down at the table. His plate sounded like Smithy’s Indian order from Gavin and Stacey.

I think given there was plenty of veg, potatoes, beef, turkey, stuffing ham the only ‘per person’ portions were announced in advance - 1 giant Yorkshire each and 4 pigs in blankets. He took 2 yorkshires on his plate and one to eat on his way to the table plus 8 pigs in blankets (because my ASN niece had 8 and he felt entitled - she only eats them and broccoli out of that offering!).

Some people are just greedy fuckers.

Beth216 · 15/07/2024 10:14

If there wasn't enough dip for everyone to stand there scooping up loads then anyone with any decency would only have taken a reasonable amount.
