Underdressed teens prancing about on school stage

I'm feel so old but when did this become a thing?
I've been to a couple of high school showcase evenings this year. Where the kids show off their singing, play musical instruments, do some acting or dancing.
The evenings are really good and it's brilliant for the kids to be able to show off their talents but sometimes the clothes the girls wear for the dancing acts seem a bit inappropriate to me.
The one I went to last week had two teenage girls in what looked like knickers and t-shirts dancing very well but rather erotically to a Beyonce song.
The girls were really good at dancing and would not have been out of place on a stage or a lap dancing club but AIBU to feel it's not very appropriate at a school event?
Do all high schools have these sort of dance classes? Is dancing around in skimpy clothes just a normal thing to do nowadays?
I'll put down the pearls I have been clutching and am fully prepared to be told to get with the times!

This...also the 70s and mini skirts?

TheShellBeach · 14/07/2024 12:31

I wore hot pants in the 1970s.

I haven't got the figure for them now

Gettingannoyednow · 14/07/2024 12:32

I feel your pain to some extent. Normal teen clothes nowadays are more revealing than when I were a lass. (E.g. we had leggings but your top covered your bum back then. Now leggings all-too-often show camel toe and arse crack) I know the response will be "don't look" or "it's just a body" but I work in a school where they're allowed as uniform so there's literally hundreds of them. I don't want to see other people's privates. What's so terrible about trousers?

But yeah, sounds like what you saw was totally normal by today's standards.

I recall such a show at the school I worked at and a couple of lovely young male teachers were clearly quite aghast and didn't know where to look. I agree with you totally.

I wore them in the 90s.
I still wear shorts but prefer a slightly longer leg now. 🫣

Isn't that their issue though?

SoftandQuiet · 14/07/2024 12:35

There is a fashion for a type of shorts which do look like pants to me, material seams too thin for outerwear- but girls gyrating provocatively? t’was ever thus

Kriscross · 14/07/2024 12:37

With the massive growth in online graphic porn watching with boys and further sexualisation of girls YANBU.

Some of the online stuff boys are watching and sharing on social media is awful. Provocative dancing in underwear adds to the message girls are for sex.

Is it provocative dancing or just dancing?

No it isn't. Gyrating and sexual dancing and underage girls is a school production problem. It isn't really a requirement of a good show

Yeah, I'm not keen on those shorts either, except in a sporting context e.g. athletics.

PuttingDownRoots · 14/07/2024 12:40

In my day (90s!) We had to athletics and cross country in PE knickers.binnpublic parks

They make the modern shorts look long!

Movinghouseatlast · 14/07/2024 12:40

We used to dress up as St Trinians in stocking and suspenders in 1980! All girls 'posh' school.

Xyz1234567 · 14/07/2024 12:43

Werweisswohin · 14/07/2024 12:35

No! These guys had massive tits, in basically bras, jiggling up and down in front of their faces and arse cheeks hanging out as these young girls were bending over. The teachers looked mortified. I was mortified. All this horseshit about girls being able to go around like half naked porn stars= girl power, good for them, men are pervs if they look at them. No!!

Magnificentkitteh · 14/07/2024 12:44

It's possibly less the shorts and more the dancing style that's the issue here?

Werweisswohin · 14/07/2024 12:45

So, larger chested girls can't dance?
Presumably someone saw this at rehearsal and didn't veto it?
Why were the teachers so close to the stage?

Xyz1234567 · 14/07/2024 12:47

They can dance but don't have to do it in a bra at school. The vast majority of the staff were absolutely incredulous when they saw it.

Xyz1234567 · 14/07/2024 12:48

Is there any reason why they can't be close to the stage?

Hoppinggreen · 14/07/2024 12:48

When I was around 10 a group of us at school did the Can Can, my Mum got me proper frilly knickers to do it in and everything, we finished by facing away from the audience and bending over while lifting up our skirts.
No idea what the school/ my Mum were thinking
This was around 1980

Yes, this, the combination of dancing style with the 'knicker shorts'.
I get that girls have always worn mini skirts, hot pants, bikinis, boob tubes etc.
It was more the incongruousness (to me) of over sexualised dancing in skimpy clothes at a school event.

But someone ok'd it?
Was it a bra or a bra style top?

What do you mean by 'oversexualised'? What was the musical/song?
