Should Bank Holidays be scrapped?

Catlover1705 · 11/07/2024 19:13

Talking about an extra one if England win got me thinking about whether they should be scrapped. They cost the economy a lot of money and many sectors such as retail don't get them off. I would prefer additional leave so I can choose my days off. I normally stay home bank hols as the traffic is awful.

No, they shouldn’t. They don’t cost the economy a lot of money (did you see anyone raising that about the one for the Coronation?). I’d go further and actually shut more so more families could be guaranteed the time together (I appreciate there are services which can’t do this).

StoneTheCrone · 11/07/2024 19:18

I agree with you.

I hate how busy everywhere gets. Its not like the old days when it didnt matter if everyone was off at the same time.

goldfinch73514 · 11/07/2024 19:18

No because some people don't take their holiday. They have to be forced to

BobnLen · 11/07/2024 19:21

How are they going to do an extra one anyway on Monday that people are asking for, match doesn't finish until about ten, people won't know if they are going to work next day. People are hoping for day off on Monday if they win

orangesandlemonssaythebellsofstclements · 11/07/2024 19:21

No, I like them. I got married on a Sunday, the day before a Bank Holiday Monday. It wouldn't have been possible to get the month we wanted without doing that. It's nice to have an extra day of weekend that is a national thing so you can arrange stuff with big groups. Yes, not everyone gets them off but not everyone gets weekends off either.

MaybeImbad · 11/07/2024 19:24

No, I like them. It’s good to have a few days that many people get off together.

Why does it cost the economy? It can be a real boost to leisure industry for example

HaPPy8 · 11/07/2024 19:25

No!! I love them! We should have more!

DatingDinosaur · 11/07/2024 19:25

No. Keep them. I think we should have one a month. Bollocks to how it affects the economy. I want a free, paid day off Grin

Shoxfordian · 11/07/2024 19:26

I love a bank holiday

SaltyGod · 11/07/2024 19:27

Why does economic cost (if you believe that they cost more than they generate) matter more happiness, time off, time together, national celebration and unity?

Bank holidays are more than just a day off. Imagine Christmas as a normal working day, how sad that sounds. Reminds me of the Puritans.

I understand you don’t like them, but I suspect many others do.

Would we be the only country without any national holidays?

ScottBakula · 11/07/2024 19:27

I think so many employers would just say , ok there are no such thing as BH anymore so you only get 20 days a year off.

WorkerBee101 · 11/07/2024 19:28

Fuck no.

Can we never have anything nice without someone trying to piss on our chips? Would you like a 6 day working week for all too because some people already do longer hours?

Disturbia81 · 11/07/2024 19:30

I've never worked anywhere where I got them off, and worked in all kinds of sectors. So yeah let's ditch them 😆

A BANK HOLIDAY ! For winning the football.thats insane. I've not got anything else to say.

AbraAbraCadabra · 11/07/2024 19:35

No if course not. If they scrapped them, you wouldn't get them as annual leave instead! Or they'd give them to you and then surreptitiously phase it out until you just had less leave.

JC03745 · 11/07/2024 19:36

NO- don't scrap bank holidays 🙄
Having 1 for football is odd, but any job I've had, I'd get paid more to work a bank holiday.

AnneLovesGilbert · 11/07/2024 19:37

I love bank holidays. Loads of countries have way more than we do. Any excuse!

keylimedog · 11/07/2024 19:41

We don't even get that many when you start comparing to other countries!

I bloody love a bank holiday, feels like a free holiday even though it isn't 😂

AquaFurball · 11/07/2024 19:44

Keep the bank holidays, ban the football.

LaurieFairyCake · 11/07/2024 19:45

They're great

Let's have more

Much better plan.

May is my favourite month

Ponoka7 · 11/07/2024 19:50

My GC hospital admission was cancelled thanks to the Queen's death impromptu BH, it took seven months for another appointment. We have ridiculous waiting lists as it is. A BH should only be declared as long as medical appointments aren't disrupted. But then we have the assessments in schools that make up the multi disciplinary team around the child, also cancelled. Then there's court dates etc etc.

whathasitgottodowiththepriceofoliveoil · 11/07/2024 19:51

I'd be up for them giving everyone a day off for their birthday which they can use in their birthday month at any time.

The legal minimum is 5.6 weeks off a year, regardless of whether that includes bank holidays or not.
