Should Bank Holidays be scrapped?

Talking about an extra one if England win got me thinking about whether they should be scrapped. They cost the economy a lot of money and many sectors such as retail don't get them off. I would prefer additional leave so I can choose my days off. I normally stay home bank hols as the traffic is awful.

They're good for local economies which rely on tourism.

We have one of the fewest amount of bank holidays in europe. So it's not like they're a British quirk which no where else has.

I think we should have more. And certainly more which aren't in school holidays

I think we should get an extra one in October or November. There's too long between August and Christmas with no Bank Holidays. In fact, I want one in January or February too. They are depressing and it's too long until Easter.

Why does it cost more than everyone having 8 days extra annual leave?
Are you confident everyone would get it added to their annual leave?
Is it not good for the economy as many places get extra business?
Many couples struggle to get time off at the same time so sometimes BH make this easier.

I love a bank holiday, walk into town and have coffee, read a book, relax, Monday glass of wine, bit of gardening or just a general chill with the family. Can’t beat it, we need more!

yes, we should ban bank holidays because they cost the economy a lot of money and then introduce the 4 day working week because it will lead to an increase in productivity.

They were less busy when we still had half day Wednesdays and shops shut on Sundays these days lots of people use them as catch up days

This can't be true about an extra BH if England win. And even if this was a possibility, there is no way a BH would be decided at 10pm on Sunday night for the following day? (As a PP has mentioned)

On the whole I like BH's but I don't want one sprung on me.

My work have been very forward thinking and an email went round today asking people to book Monday off if they think they'll be too hungover to work 😅

I love them. I’m actually off work on a Monday anyway so I get those days annual leave whenever I fancy

Funny how days off for royal events help boost the economy, but ordinary bank holidays are a drain on the eceonomy?

Love a bank holiday. We need to add one for Halloween, August to Christmas is painfully long.

Here in NI we have a great run from Paddy's Day in March through to July and August and then... Nothing.

By that reasoning everyone should start working several nightshifts because some people have to.

I’m a doctor and have patients booked to see me in clinic, we’re so busy I don’t know how we will rebook.

we also staff weekends differently to weekdays for on call shifts. Bank holidays have to be staffed like a weekend, we’ve had no notice to get enough staff. It will be chaos.

I like a bank hol but they need proper planning.
