Should Bank Holidays be scrapped?

Catlover1705 · 11/07/2024 19:13

Talking about an extra one if England win got me thinking about whether they should be scrapped. They cost the economy a lot of money and many sectors such as retail don't get them off. I would prefer additional leave so I can choose my days off. I normally stay home bank hols as the traffic is awful.

First I've heard about a bank holiday over winning the football, have you just plucked this out of thin air?

And we're not worker drones, bank holidays are great!

haveatye · 12/07/2024 10:59

Scrap bank holidays

Default to a four day week

Money's worth nothing if you die of hypertension in your 50s

Normalinnit · 12/07/2024 11:00

Let’s keep the BH’s at Easter and Christmas but the rest, yes, let’s scrap 😄 they’re a pain and often feel like a wasted day, much prefer the thought of adding them to leave.

FoleyHuck · 12/07/2024 11:00

We're in Jersey and Monday is a public holiday here already, for a different reason. Football fans are delighted!

RainintheDesert · 12/07/2024 11:02

No. I don't often take my BH on the designated day because of shift work, so instead they are bundled together and I get a week off. I miss out on "long weekends" though.

SkankingWombat · 12/07/2024 11:51

I would say they are more important now than ever, with the way regular overtime for no extra pay is so often the norm and technology allows annual leave to be interrupted. Not everyone gets them, but having a break that many not just in their work place but most connected businesses also have off does give a genuine break for a lot of people. No need to 'quickly check my emails', no returning to a stacked inbox, no receiving panicked phone calls because someone didn't listen at handover and now can't find a crucial piece of paperwork.

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 12/07/2024 11:53

Yes agree, people should be given the extra leave in lieu of bank holidays. Christmas day however should be left as is.

Sunnydiary · 12/07/2024 11:54

We have so few compared to other European countries. I would definitely like more of them.

cardibach · 11/07/2024 19:17

No, they shouldn’t. They don’t cost the economy a lot of money (did you see anyone raising that about the one for the Coronation?). I’d go further and actually shut more so more families could be guaranteed the time together (I appreciate there are services which can’t do this).

They do cost the economy lots of money

luckylavender · 12/07/2024 11:56

BobnLen · 11/07/2024 19:21

How are they going to do an extra one anyway on Monday that people are asking for, match doesn't finish until about ten, people won't know if they are going to work next day. People are hoping for day off on Monday if they win

It obviously won't be Monday 🫣

RedToothBrush · 12/07/2024 11:57

Can we just WIN the football first THEN worry about whether we like bank holidays or not?!

Eadfrith · 12/07/2024 11:59

Someone mentioned the four day working week. I think that would be an amazing step forward. They’ve done it somewhere in Scandinavia haven’t they? And funnily enough people perform better at work and have a better work / life balance.

parkrun500club · 12/07/2024 12:08

I'd do away with them and have an enhanced legal minimum holiday instead. Why do we have to take holiday when the government says we must?

Some employers are already moving towards flexing bank holidays anyway - ie if eg you don't celebrate Christmas, you can work it and take time off at a different time.

Not a fan of bank holidays. It feels like forced fun. Which isn't fun. Let me take time off when I want to.

Thegreatgiginthesky · 12/07/2024 12:09

No, just ban them for teachers so parents can have a proper rest

😉only joking.

We do, but we always get ours, whereas in European countries, if they fall at a weekend, you lose them.

Personally I'm more invested in bank holidays than a daft game

They don’t. How would they? Lots more tourism spends. Very little actually completely stops.

A BANK HOLIDAY ! For winning the football.thats insane. I've not got anything else to say.

Totally insane. We didn't get one when England won the Euros two years ago, so there's no chance this time anyway.

luckylavender · 12/07/2024 12:34

@Catlover1705 in my business a Bank Holiday costs us thousands. In the NHS the same.Other industries will do well.

luckylavender · 12/07/2024 12:35

Sorry my last post was for @cardibach

Well that was just "the ladies" obviously not as important as men!

TheGoogleMum · 12/07/2024 12:38

No let's have more bank holidays!

TallulahBetty · 12/07/2024 12:39

No, we need more.

Well apparently Starmer did want one to celebrate their victory but the conservatives were in power then

Greenleavesinthesun · 12/07/2024 12:41

Most other countries get close to just under double what we get.

we should get more! I don’t know why family time is not considered important in this country.
