To ask how to lock a door?

That doesn't have a keyhole... From the outside!
DH family are stopping by at ours after a gathering and very nosy. I wouldn't put it past them to 'accidentally' wander into a different room despite knowing where the toilet is!

Please share your wisdom MN!
I've had a Google but it all seems to be things like bars across the door. I was really hoping for a lock thing of some sort

Just put a laminated no entry sign on the door??

Whatevershallidowithmylife · 02/07/2024 22:38

Maybe just move your hostages chair against the door and you climb out the window? Seriously need to know what’s in the room -

They already know they shouldn't be going into other rooms - they just don't care.
There's nothing particularly exciting in there TBF the rooms are just a bit of a mess so don't want them to be seen.

My first thought was a cabin hook, but when I googled I also found these from IKEA: https://www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/undvika-multi-latch-white-40339867/?gclsrc=aw.ds&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjwyo60BhBiEiwAHmVLJQUvsjJdxrlN2tk6yX350zFouEi8aW6igu7Afr2dqtncBywq664TuBoC4K4QAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

Sure, they could undo it easily but it would be very obvious so possibly a deterrent?

These are interesting - sorry for being dense but how would they be tethered - door handle to wall?

You're not going to be able to lock a door from outside without it being obvious, like a hasp and padlock. There's plenty you could do from the inside, but then you'd need to jump out the window!

JurassicClark · 02/07/2024 22:48

(Sorry for that hideously link, don’t know why it was so long)

IveGotNoGallbladder · 02/07/2024 22:48

Unscrew door handle on outside. Remove square bar inside that turns the catch. Screw door handle back on.
Hide square bar in a safe place and don’t forget where it is. 😘

IveGotNoGallbladder · 02/07/2024 22:49

Handle will still ‘work’ but not do its job.

I don't mind it being obvious - as long as it doesn't open when tried! Unless you have the key of course

This is the best answer!!!

This gets my vote. Though I might not even bother to put the handle back!

So you mean your bedroom doors whilst your family go to the loo upstairs, out of sight?

Not sure id have family round who would snoop.

But what about these either at the bottom or top of the door. They don't lock but may certainly deter a trier if they're at the bottom of the door.

That has to be locked from the inside. OP wants to lock from outside.

I can only think of hasp and padlock.

No, you can fit these on the outside only if you want.

We live in a high crime (burglary) area and the police recommend these. We lock up each room before going to bed for the night. (Living room, dining room, kitchen).

That way if we’re broken into, they can’t get to the rest of the house easily.

AirBnB flats do it too, to prevent guests getting into private areas of the home.

I don’t believe you, there’s at least a sex swing in there isn’t there. Probably a whole rack of dildos and butt plugs of various sizes and shapes too. It’s the only logical answer.

MeAgainAndAgain · 02/07/2024 23:46

What’s the difference between these and a normal lock? Is it just that the end result is more discreet and less looking like a ‘front door’ and therefore looks better for internal doors?

🤣🤣🤣 No I would never dare go snooping - I would always get caught - I just need to know! It’s like reading a mystery novel - I get so far and if it’s really good I skip to the end to see whodunnit or else I can’t enjoy the book - no patience!!!

Edited

You can fit them in the top corner, nice and discreet, and it’s quite a small item so doesn’t much disturb the look of the door.

The same key opens all of them, it’s generic - sort of star shaped - so you don’t need to keep a separate key per room. It only works on one side of the door.

It’s just an unobtrusive security bolt,
