To ask how to lock a door?

That doesn't have a keyhole... From the outside!
DH family are stopping by at ours after a gathering and very nosy. I wouldn't put it past them to 'accidentally' wander into a different room despite knowing where the toilet is!

Please share your wisdom MN!
I've had a Google but it all seems to be things like bars across the door. I was really hoping for a lock thing of some sort

Unscrew door handle on outside. Remove square bar inside that turns the catch. Screw door handle back on.
Hide square bar in a safe place and don’t forget where it is. 😘

This is what we used to do when we hosted house parties in our uni houses to stop drunk friends going into bedrooms etc.

paddlinglikecrazy · 03/07/2024 12:58

Hang something noisy and jangly on the handle so it would draw attention to door being opened ?

Waffle78 · 03/07/2024 14:06

We have starkey locks I have a similar problem with older sister nosying upstairs. She will go nosying through our wardrobes asking me where I got clothes for DD and ds.

If the door opens inwards you can do it with a door wedge and a piece of string.

Super glue a length of string to the bottom of the door wedge. With the door half open put the string under the door with the wedge on the inside. Close the door. Gently pull the door wedge until it's under the door on the inside, then give a sharp tug to pull it tight and snap the glue so that the string comes away in your hand.

Of course, you now have a different problem.

Follow them upstairs every time they go. and if they ask, tell them about their snooping.

With any luck they'll be so offended they won't do it again, or even better won't come back.

Or a movement activated sprinkler?

Or the old trick of leaving the door partly open with a bucket of water balanced on top.

The bucket of water was my only suggestion!!

This. Easy.

lazyarse123 · 03/07/2024 17:05

I wouldn't bother. Just tell the nosey fuckers it's none of their business what's in there and if they complain it's a mess tell them that's none of their business either.

maslinpan · 03/07/2024 19:15

Cover the door handle in a thick layer of Vaseline.

IveGotNoGallbladder · 03/07/2024 19:50

Have you got time to install a downstairs loo? 😆

Yes.

I was thinking that.

I am assuming that it is an indoor bedroom or something.

Post pics of both door handles, including their fixing screws, and of the latch on the edge of the door.

Have you got a proper set of screwdrivers?

Chillilounger · 03/07/2024 20:14

Bucket of water on top of the door?

NC10125 · 03/07/2024 21:30

You don’t need a lock, you need very jangly wind chimes hung on the inside of the door do that they make a huge noise if someone goes in!

"Also portable door lock https://www.lifeventure.com/products/travel-door-lock

Most are meant for you to lock yourself in though."

Would this work on a door that opens outwards?

Does anyone know whether this would work for a door that opens outwards?

PigletJohn · 04/07/2024 10:34

The person on the outside would be able to undo it

The person on the inside would not.

FloofPaws · 04/07/2024 10:36

My ILs are like that too, had a very close shave where FIL was walking around our garden smoking, and he was looking into our bedroom windows (bungalow) when I was getting dressed (in his defence he didn't know that), thankfully I was just putting a jumper on so all covered but it's made Me Close the curtains! He also has a habit of looking in our outside bins, one is always filled up with glass, usually beer and wine as we Tend to keep jars - I'm sure he thinks we're alcoholics !
So watching with anticipation on good ideas !

allthemiddlechildrenoftheworld · 04/07/2024 10:54

finger print recognition

Merida46 · 04/07/2024 12:52

Get some of those alarms you hang on door handles. The noise of the first one going off should deter them from opening anymore!

lockdoor · 07/07/2024 12:08

Sorry all forgot to update - DH was so pissed off with his families nosiness he bought and installed smart door locks on the affected rooms...with fingerprint recognition its like the one @allthemiddlechildrenoftheworld
All for naught as they ended up not coming.... but next time , we'll be prepared!
Also honoured that @PigletJohn has responded 😂

Well done your dh! Now you need a discreet camera so you can see their faces when they realise 😁
