Can’t remember what I paid last year but sure it wasn’t so excessive…

Asked for a quote for a service and MOT on my car. £415! Surely not?! I don’t have an SUV, it’s a Fiesta 😂 and I’ve only put 4000 miles on it this year, 4 year old car

YABU - that’s what you pay
YANBU - they’re being cheeky

Insurances for everything have virtually doubled. its the covid effect. you can look around with brokers and do online but thats what it is now.

DH’s Ford Focus MOT and full service was about 250 at the same place and we’re only talking last October, come to think of it. The mechanic has said something about the Ford spark plugs not being available in the aftermarket (?) hence the price.

The service on mine had gone up massively too. Not sure why but there seems to be a big rise in the cost this year.

Jeepers. Rang another garage and they’ve also said £300 ish for full service. Maybe the first garage that we’ve always used weren’t actually ripping us off and £415 is the best they can do

One thing to note is ford have stopped manufacturing fiestas so that could affect the price point somewhat (as opposed to your DHs focus which they do still manufacture)

BarcardiWithGadaffia · 24/06/2024 15:52

Is that a main dealer price? If so run straight to the nearest trustworthy local garage

spikeandbuffy · 24/06/2024 15:52

Spark plugs always push a service up so it depends what it's due for having changed
I usually pay about £45 for MOT and £100-200 on a service (polo) depending what it needs

fieldsofbutterflies · 24/06/2024 15:56

Local garages are much cheaper than main dealers, could you shop around?

That’s a local garage

A full service is a lot of things. Oil, maybe brake fluid, gearbox oil. The components make up the majority of the cost. You could do it yourself, of course.

Cars hate not being driven. At 4000 miles a year the fluids will be manky. Is there any point having a car for it not to be driven?

It's still being driven
Mine does less than 2000 a year but I couldn't cope without it
Public transport is shocking and there isn't even a bus to the supermarket let alone work

RoobarbAndMustard · 24/06/2024 16:14

The Ford Puma which is still being manufactured has the same engine as the most recent Fiesta. So you should still be able to get parts.

ForPearlViper · 24/06/2024 16:14

It does sound expensive but it depends where you are in the country. I changed garage because it went up (and the garage location was tricky). I now pay around £200 for service and MOT when no work needs doing. Sometimes it's much less as I do a low mileage like you and the owner of the garage advised it didn't necessarily need a 'full bells and whistles' service every time. He's also helped me out with various other car issues and, bless him, doesn't always charge.

I found this garage through asking round people I trust. At the risk of being ageist and sexist this is one occasion where the older male neighbour who is always polishing their car is useful!

PeonySeasons · 24/06/2024 16:15

Really? Even the local Ford dealership charge less for my 2018 Focus diesel (but I take it to a local garage for less!).

VolvoFan · 24/06/2024 16:18

Thing about Fords is that parts are (or at least used to be) readily available, owing to it being a common car. Servicing and MOT both may require replacement parts, and if those parts are scarce at the moment, that'll explain the price increase. Plus the cost of labour, it all adds up. Way of life is expensive now.

mondaytosunday · 24/06/2024 16:19

Yes. I think that's a major service year. I just had mine done and it was just under £400.

PeonySeasons · 24/06/2024 16:20

I've just checked ATS and the fanciest service is £284.

SooKafatone · 24/06/2024 16:22

You must be in London???

Try a Bosch Service Centre, 3 levels of bronze, silver and gold depending on what it needs but that price for a fiesta is ridiculous. What year is it?

Just gets more expensive when tyres degrade and engine parts seize because it spends more time being an ornament than what it was designed for.

would a bike not be a better option if you’re averaging less than 6 miles a day?

Leavingasinkingship · 24/06/2024 16:22

I'm not sure exactly what service my car has just had, but 2018 fiesta service and MOT was £250 at a local garage last month!

Abovemypaygrade · 24/06/2024 16:23

my similar small 1.2 petrol 6 year old car , serviced and MOT at a local family ran garage (was recommended by several locals as I’m new to area ) £161.39 on 31 May this year

DilemmaDelilah · 24/06/2024 16:23

The RAC came and did a full service and oil change for our SUV on our driveway a few months ago and I'm sure it was cheaper than that!

No, Yorkshire! 69 plate

@FunZebra nope, I can't bike to carry a full food shop home and I can't bike when I do a 30-50 mile hospital trip or day out
I do a decent drive in it but probably only once or twice a week, I never do just a 5 min journey to make sure the battery is ok

iamtheblcksheep · 24/06/2024 16:28

That is on the high end. I’d be interested to know what you get for that money as the interpretation of a service varies. I work in a garage. We charge £250 for a basic service.
