Can’t remember what I paid last year but sure it wasn’t so excessive…

Asked for a quote for a service and MOT on my car. £415! Surely not?! I don’t have an SUV, it’s a Fiesta 😂 and I’ve only put 4000 miles on it this year, 4 year old car

YABU - that’s what you pay
YANBU - they’re being cheeky

Mine was around £400 in April for a full service, MOT and air con refresh. This was a local garage in Kent.

SpindleyDindley · 24/06/2024 16:51

My last service and MOT was about £150 because very little needed doing.

Have the actually given you an itemised list of what they will be doing for £415? Or is that the price they have quoted without any big ticket replacements such as brake discs?

At face value that sounds like they are scamming you. But we need more information to be sure.

No service Inc's brakes. It's only oils, filters etc.

So what do you think that quote menitoned of £580 for the Qashqai includes? Thats more than just filters/oil/fluids

spikeandbuffy · 24/06/2024 17:00

@Purpledrank I would imagine brake fluid, spark plugs, belt, some include brake hoses
I guess when people say doesn't include brakes they're meaning pads and discs

spikeandbuffy · 24/06/2024 17:00

Although to be fair on some prestige cars you're looking at £600 for just oil and filters

Purpledrank · 24/06/2024 17:02

Brake hoses! Never heard of that one before. Yes, spark plugs and aux belts do crop up but aux belt is usually after an inspection.

spikeandbuffy · 24/06/2024 17:03

Yeah the brand I work for changes them on the scheduled service at 6 years usually

TippedOverTheGravyJug · 24/06/2024 17:10

Spark plugs , gear box oil, engine oil , fuel filter, oil filter, pollen filter etc. Labour average garage is £70ph plus vat 1.5 to 3 hrs work depending on size of the service

Never heard of it including brake hoses ?

Oil prices have rocketed to be fair bit the OPs quote is definitely on the High side.

Blouson · 24/06/2024 17:43

Seems steep but we need to know what it includes.

TinkerTiger · 24/06/2024 17:51

Did MOT/Service couple weeks ago, 2010 hatchback. Mechanic does a deal where the MOT is free or half price, can't remember. I also needed new break lights.

Altogether I paid £230.

I’ve always found my mechanic charges a fair price so I've never gone anywhere else.

Also I don’t think 4000 miles is particularly low for a year, surprised a poster said that!

The the average mileage in the UK is 10-12k a year. So yeah, it’s low. (And your car insurance will
cost more as a result as you aren’t driving enough to maintain your skills.)

You dont half spout some nonsense. Some (if not all) reduce premiums ever so slightly for less mileage.

FunZebra · 24/06/2024 18:50

Having worked for one of the UK’s biggest insurers i can assure you it is true.

That's a ridiculously low annual milage 😀

GasPanic · 24/06/2024 19:06

Depends what the service entails.

In the service schedules there are major and minor services, so for example brake fluid might be every 2 years, so every alternate year it is cheaper.

You can go for a non dealer service, but they may not maintain it in the same way as a dealer.

£120 for an oil change?! I remember when it was about 40 quid at national tyres and exhausts! OP, try a local independent, ideally a one that fits quality parts. I'd not be going anywhere near Kwik Fit.

Edited

I've used my local Kwik Fit a couple of times when my garage was busy. Found them to be really good. Even for something like new brake pads they video everything to prove they've done the work. Apparently they started it because they were sick of being threatened by argumentative people with weapons so that may say more about my local area than anything else 😀
Provided nothing needs doing my local garage charge about £260 for full service and MOT.
