Can’t remember what I paid last year but sure it wasn’t so excessive…

Asked for a quote for a service and MOT on my car. £415! Surely not?! I don’t have an SUV, it’s a Fiesta 😂 and I’ve only put 4000 miles on it this year, 4 year old car

YABU - that’s what you pay
YANBU - they’re being cheeky

I’ve just been quoted £580 at a main dealer for my Qashqai. 😱

Sozzels · 24/06/2024 16:25

No, Yorkshire! 69 plate

I'd be asking what that price consists of. Main dealers arent often as expensive as some people think. It's a 5 year service so is it anything beyond the usual oil/air/pollen filters, oil, maybe brake fluid. If so then that price is well off. Maybe theyve added a cheeky air con service and additives?

If so Id be going somewhere else.

iamtheblcksheep · 24/06/2024 16:28

That is on the high end. I’d be interested to know what you get for that money as the interpretation of a service varies. I work in a garage. We charge £250 for a basic service.

I usually go with
Oil, oil filter and pollen for minor
Above plus fuel and air filter for major

Our prices depend on stuff like belts, spark plugs, brake hoses etc too but it's an expensive brand so some services are £1400 and over if it's a cam belt one

user1471528631 · 24/06/2024 16:31

If they are doing a full service this may include brake fluid change(every two years)spark plugs can be as much as £18 plus vat each if the are iridium ones.Gearoil May be due £8/9 per Lt ,plus rear brake strip down on a big service will Make a huge difference To the cost. You need to ask what service they are going to do.A lot depends on what was done last time.At my garage a regular service(oil and filters) with an mot usually costs around £240 a big service could be £450 ish

Okay, I asked for a quote for an interim service instead of a full service. They have said £218 for ‘oil and filter service’ and MOT. Still too much?

Yes. An oil and filter service is just that and nowt else, even less than a basic service. They should be servicing it in accordance with Ford schedule. Ask them what the £415 gets you, cost if it needs air filter then it needs it. Is it some cluelass lass on reception?!

Bumblebeeinatree · 24/06/2024 16:35

Some services are more expensive than others as extra parts may need changing after several years. Ask for a breakdown of the service and compare to last years.

Paul2023 · 24/06/2024 16:36

BarcardiWithGadaffia · 24/06/2024 15:52

Is that a main dealer price? If so run straight to the nearest trustworthy local garage

In some ways that can be right but some of the main dealers have reduced their prices.

I have a Vauxhall Astra. Two independent garages wanted £300 for a full service plus an MOT is about £54.

My local Vauxhall dealer charged £289 for a full service and the same for an MOT. And they have a comfortable show room to sit in and wash and vac the car afterwards.

So going to my local main dealer was the same if not cheaper than an independent garage .

There are different types of services, interim, main and major.

For that I would imagine about £140 ish but..
definitely get a breakdown of it
Have you got a service history to see what it has last time

It had everything about 18 months ago. It was on 8000 miles then. Now it has barely done 12,000 miles.

Sozzels · 24/06/2024 16:38

Also I don’t think 4000 miles is particularly low for a year, surprised a poster said that!

Yes, exactly this, same for that massive Qashqai quote above. Might include brakes etc.

Doesn’t include brakes. The price is just the checks, not any parts

spikeandbuffy · 24/06/2024 16:43

It should include some parts - oil and filter at least

4,000 miles IS very low for a year.

& yes an interim service & full service are very different things. If you've not had it serviced in 18 months you're going to pay more per service than if you have it done 6 monthly because more will need to be done, but with such low mileage annually is probably sufficient & cheaper.

TippedOverTheGravyJug · 24/06/2024 16:44

Oil and filter service with the labour is generally around £120. Mot they're legally only allowed to charge £54.85 .

It won't be, it will include various filters being replaced & the oil.

it won't include work or parts for things like brakes.

TippedOverTheGravyJug · 24/06/2024 16:47

No service includes brakes

3 services are interim, full , major.

Poolstream · 24/06/2024 16:48

A full service and mot for a Fiesta is about £250 at kwik fit.
Not sure if I would use them but it gives you an idea of price.

Purpledrank · 24/06/2024 16:50

£120 for an oil change?! I remember when it was about 40 quid at national tyres and exhausts! OP, try a local independent, ideally a one that fits quality parts. I'd not be going anywhere near Kwik Fit.

Poolstream · 24/06/2024 16:50

A full service looks at brakes and presumably advises if necessary.

My last service and MOT was about £150 because very little needed doing.

Have the actually given you an itemised list of what they will be doing for £415? Or is that the price they have quoted without any big ticket replacements such as brake discs?

At face value that sounds like they are scamming you. But we need more information to be sure.
