Not a AIBU, but can anyone help?
Is the “Child’s unique reference number” on the Child Trust Fund account the same as the NI number?
Thanks in advance

I don't think they are issued before the child is 16.

Apparently they are issued at birth but most people don't get them until they are 16
I don't know Op i know that my Disabled child's DLA reference number is his national insurance number he's been getting DLA since he was 3
But probably not much help to you.

No, it won't be the same as you don't get issued with a national insurance number until you turn 16.

I don't think they are issued before the child is 16.

IIRC they are allocated when the child is the subject of a child benefit claim, but not advised to the child until 16

How old is your child?

dementedpixie · 17/05/2024 12:16

Yes the NI number is the same as the unique reference number that is allocated to the Child Trust Fund account.

They are allocated before 16 though, just not issued

I have 2 children who are now in their teens and the unique reference number for their CTF has been identical to their NI number in both cases. It's allocated when they are babies and then they are issued with it when they turn 16.

Its in the format AB123456C

frankentall · 17/05/2024 12:20

Perhaps not of immediate help - but advise them to get the HMRC app/account too to keep track of their tax and NI affairs

My son is disabled he gets DLA and has been getting it since he was three he's 14 now. apparently the reference number on DLA award is his national insurance, number which apparently people get at birth ,but most people only get issued it at 16 .

I don't know the answer, OP but I want to commend you on your enterprising use of AIBU as a fast fact finder. I need to know what concentration of nitric acid to use for washing glassware for use in vitamin analysis. Or should it be sulphuric acid? Can anyone advise?
😃

My DS was contacted at the age of 20 and told he had been issued with ‘the wrong NI number’ - really annoying as he had already been paying tax and NI for a couple of years! He had to attend an interview where he was given the correct one. He was told the NI is issued at birth, and they had just failed to match his correctly.

Lougle · 17/05/2024 12:27

Yes, the CTF reference is the NI number. It is also the number that the DWP use for DLA.

We never found out. It was all very odd but seems to be sorted now. We lived abroad for a while so maybe that’s where the problem started.

No, I can only remember using chromic acid for cleaning filthy lab glassware.
