Anyone up to marvel at my DP's stupidity?

We've arrived in Venice.
Had to walk through a slightly flooded square to get to hotel so took shoes off and went for it. Get a shower in hotel, no big deal.

I look behind me and DP is wheeling the CANVAS suitcase right the through the dirty canal water.

Am now stood handwashing my (new) dresses in the sink and fuming.

I deliberately packed carefully so only have precisely enough clothes for the days we're here.

He thinks IABU to be pissed off.

AIBU?

I'd drown him in said canal.

PhuckyNell · 17/05/2024 01:03

Oh dear I would of done this without a second thought!

until I too was washing my dresses 🤦🏻‍♀️

xxlostxx · 17/05/2024 01:03

Bloody men! Thickos most of them!

Crunk · 17/05/2024 01:04

Oh dear. I’d be using hotel laundry services rather than washing new clothes in the sink. With him paying…

CoffeeBeansGalore · 17/05/2024 01:05

Please tell me all of his underwear was in there too? He can if course wash it himself when you have finished your dresses.

TheChosenTwo · 17/05/2024 01:06

Hard to judge without seeing what you were walking through tbh! If you could see your feet through crystal clear water then possibly foolish, if you couldn’t clearly see where you were stepping and it was covering your feet then I think it’s fair enough - I mean, ‘stuff’ (clothes, material possessions) can be washed/replaced if damaged, would have been far worse if either of you had fallen on unsteady or precarious ground while trying to lift a suitcase and protect dresses!
Anyway, hope you manage to make the most of your break away!

StormInaDcup99 · 17/05/2024 01:09

Oh I'd be fuming OP!

On another note, if this makes you feel any better, my husband (before I met him) and best friend went travelling around europe for a few months

They were dying to go to Venice. They arrived in what they were told was Venice, by train. But oh no....it couldn't be Venice! as they'd arrived in 'Venezia' according to the massive sign at station.

So they stayed on the train and left 'Venezia' thinking the trains and Italians must be a bit useless, as it had brought them to the wrong place lol

I love reminding him of that mix up when he keeps me going about a mistake I made lol

Reminds me of when back in the days of postcards, I sent someone a card from Rhodes, which said Rodos on the front. She said “oh, I thought you went to Rhodes?”

LadyWiddiothethird · 17/05/2024 01:58

The flood water in Venice is vile!! Send himself out in the morning to buy you a new wardrobe at his expense.

Amoreena · 17/05/2024 02:13

Chuck all his pants in the canal. (Not really)

Mummyoflittledragon · 17/05/2024 05:57

In a few months time, hopefully this will be an eye roll, mickey taking moment. Right now, yes, I’d be very very annoyed.

Tbh I'm more shocked that you thought walking through dirty canal water barefoot was a smart idea. The nasty infections you could end up with will be much worse than a few dirty dresses.

Exactly my thoughts too

KrisAkabusi · 17/05/2024 07:01
  1. Why on earth did you take your shoes off? There could have been anything to step on under the water.
  2. How heavy was the case and how far did you have to walk? Maybe it was too heavy to carry.

Yeah same as this!

RebelWithCause · 17/05/2024 08:30

No points for walking through dirty canal water. Off topic, I’m very surprised that you had to walk through a flooded square. Venetians are usually very, very quick to set up pontoons so you can cross flooded areas easily and keep your feet dry, especially if there’s no alternative route. The only time I nearly got my feet wet there, a helpful local wader-wearing police officer carried me across 😂

My husband refused to get in to a gondola in Venice on the grounds they were a 'rip off". I admit its quite a first world problem but he remains unforgiven for having no soul.

pictoosh · 17/05/2024 09:14

I hear you...but the truth is, I'd do this as well. Not knowingly...just stupidly as you say. Ug.

Silvers11 · 17/05/2024 11:29

I have said YABU, but only because you are blaming your husband when it's the kind of thing that many people would have done without thinking about it.

YANBU to be pissed off though at having to wash out the clothes before you can wash them. Does the hotel have laundry facilities?

Mitsky · 17/05/2024 11:32

I would have probably assumed, as a woman, that my suitcase had a degree of waterproof robustness that would get through walking across a square without soaking my clothes.

and there’s no way I’d have taken my shoes off to walk through dirty water!

PlacidPenelope · 17/05/2024 11:40

One might say that having a CANVAS wheely suitcase is rather stupid.

A boss I once had (a university professor) admitted to doing the same with Firenze when he and his girlfriend (now wife) went interrailing.

He has a point…

(love Venice, love seeing the gondolas, but they are so not worth the money to hire)
