Anyone up to marvel at my DP's stupidity?

We've arrived in Venice.
Had to walk through a slightly flooded square to get to hotel so took shoes off and went for it. Get a shower in hotel, no big deal.

I look behind me and DP is wheeling the CANVAS suitcase right the through the dirty canal water.

Am now stood handwashing my (new) dresses in the sink and fuming.

I deliberately packed carefully so only have precisely enough clothes for the days we're here.

He thinks IABU to be pissed off.

Think id probably assume most cases had a degree of waterproofness tbh.. hardly the end of the world .. definitely not worth ruining holiday over

ErrolTheDragon · 17/05/2024 12:37

I think YANBU, that really was stupid. Even our tough hard shell suitcases would probably leak through the zips if immersed.

You walked barefoot through water in a city? Are you quite alright?

crumbpet · 17/05/2024 12:40

Mitsky · 17/05/2024 11:32

I would have probably assumed, as a woman, that my suitcase had a degree of waterproof robustness that would get through walking across a square without soaking my clothes.

and there’s no way I’d have taken my shoes off to walk through dirty water!

This

Oh I'd be fuming OP!

On another note, if this makes you feel any better, my husband (before I met him) and best friend went travelling around europe for a few months

They were dying to go to Venice. They arrived in what they were told was Venice, by train. But oh no....it couldn't be Venice! as they'd arrived in 'Venezia' according to the massive sign at station.

So they stayed on the train and left 'Venezia' thinking the trains and Italians must be a bit useless, as it had brought them to the wrong place lol

I love reminding him of that mix up when he keeps me going about a mistake I made lol

Ahahahahahahaha

BrutusMcDogface · 17/05/2024 12:44

I think you’re both a bit daft to be honest! Walking through smelly water in bare feet, yuk. I hated Venice. Dragging canvas bag through water, dumb BUT also, why the hell do you have a canvas one in the first place?

Now forget about it and go and enjoy your holiday!

BrutusMcDogface · 17/05/2024 12:44

Re: the Venezia/Venice mix up; that’s hilarious!! 🤣

Pettyman · 17/05/2024 12:46

Trouble is, they don’t think x

One might say that having a CANVAS wheely suitcase is rather stupid.

Well this really who bought a canvas suitcase? I hope your dresses dry and you manage to have a good time Canvas though 🙄😀

MartinsSpareCalculator · 17/05/2024 12:47

Walking through manky water barefoot is bizarre.

Was there a reason you couldn't carry your own bag?

Dweetfidilove · 17/05/2024 12:48

Equally yoked I’d say, after taking your shoes off to go through that water.

Actually, didn’t you think of the case while going?

Forgive yourselves and enjoy the rest of your break 😊.

Unless specially bought that way with signficantly different seals than a zip, no suitcases are waterproof against immersion.

MrsMoastyToasty · 17/05/2024 12:59

Take it as an opportunity to trade him in for a younger Italian model.

viques · 17/05/2024 13:00

The first time I went to Venice they were expecting a high tide, so had put the walkways up in St Marks Square. I thought they were getting ready for a market day………Confusing city Venice, but wonderful.

Crunk · 17/05/2024 01:04

Oh dear. I’d be using hotel laundry services rather than washing new clothes in the sink. With him paying…

This only works if you operate separate finances.

Not 'her bag', it was 'the suitcase'. It's pretty common for a couple to take one case which the stronger of them carries, with the other person carrying smaller bags. In most (not all) couples that means the bloke carries the case.

Immersion??? He didn't dunk it in the canal, he wheeled it through water, water at a level that the OP and he took their shoes off to wade through no indication it was up to their waists. Canvas is not a good option for puddles or even pouring rain hence one would question the merit of the canvas option.

ErrolTheDragon · 17/05/2024 13:04

Mind you...we took 2 cases to Venice one February, in large part because we each packed a pair of wellies, easily accessible. We didn't need them but would have felt silly not to have brought them.

Alalalalalongalalalalalonglonglilong · 17/05/2024 13:05

We must be married to the same man OP, I'd expect no less from DH. Did he look in the suitcase and tell you he couldn't see any dresses, therefore there are none in there. Did he put a spoon down the food waste disposal at the sink as you watched him and claim he didn't?

TruthorDie · 17/05/2024 13:06

Why isn’t he washing the dirty clothing?

ErrolTheDragon · 17/05/2024 13:06

@PlacidPenelope - yes, immersion of the bottom of the case. Most suitcase wheels are tiny so probably a few inches, enough to get into zips and wet clothes. Quite different to being in the rain.

BobLemon · 17/05/2024 13:09

Grim! Dont tell us he’s also the sort to throw the suitcase on the bed 🤢

Amx · 17/05/2024 13:43

Barefoot through water is the stupid thing!

Tbh I'm more shocked that you thought walking through dirty canal water barefoot was a smart idea. The nasty infections you could end up with will be much worse than a few dirty dresses.

Bloody women! Thickos most of them!
