Is Amelia really that bad?

We named our DC Amelia because it worked well with English speakers, DH's non-western background and also my heritage. We get lots of compliments for it too. But then the other day I read a thread on MN about naming a baby Amelia. And it sounds like it's a very overused name. I'm so sad. I really didn't realise it was so overdone and common right now.

YANBU - Amelia is a nice name
YABU - Amelia is a rubbish name

It's lovely OP stop reading crap about it

MonsteraMama · 15/05/2024 02:05

It's lovely, ignore Mumsnet baby name threads, they're utterly batshit. Do not let the crazy people on here who would have every little girl on earth called Wren or Ottilie put you off the lovely name you have chosen.

FleursDeFilles · 15/05/2024 02:08

Thank you @favouriteyellowsocks and @MonsteraMama already feeling a little better.
@MonsteraMama your post really made me chuckle x

It is a very popular name but that’s because it’s such a lovely name and lots of people like it. Some people want to give their children names that aren’t in the top 10, but that’s not important to everyone.

Wonderwall23 · 15/05/2024 02:16

Agree with pp. It is a popular choice, but that just means a lot of people like the name, which is a good thing!

WearyAuldWumman · 15/05/2024 02:16

It’s a pretty name and one that works in all Indo-European languages, I believe.

marshmallowfinder · 15/05/2024 03:55

I'm afraid I dislike it due to the mealy sound in the middle and the meaning of it as a medical definition. (Sorry, but you did ask!) However, if it's your child's name and YOU love it, that's all that matters!

60andsomething · 15/05/2024 03:59

It is a beautiful name! I have one

yumyumyumy · 15/05/2024 04:05

It's ok I guess. A little twee and meh in my opinion though.

ineedtostopbeingdramaticfirst · 15/05/2024 04:33

I love it it was in my top five for my dd.

SoLookUpTonight · 15/05/2024 05:10

It’s a lovely name, that’s why it’s popular.

TheHeadOfTheHouse · 15/05/2024 05:41

It has been done to death and does make me think you couldn’t think outside of the box.

but that’s the same with a lot of other names that are overused.

BananaLambo · 15/05/2024 05:50

It’s a beautiful, classic, name with a great pedigree.

SherbetDips · 15/05/2024 05:52

I love that name. Prefer it spelt Emilia but that’s just a werid preference. Nothing wrong with Amelia.

BeardieWeirdie · 15/05/2024 05:58

I’m not keen on the “mealy” sound but love Amelie. It sounds quite hard, but I’m the sure the same is said about one of my children’s names.

TulipsTwoLips · 15/05/2024 06:01

It’s a lovely name, I really like it. To be honest no name is as rare and ‘special’ as some parents like to think. I’ve taught for years and run groups for little ones and no name has ever floored me as being that unusual.

HappiestSleeping · 15/05/2024 06:02

I wouldn't give a shit what anyone else thinks to be honest. If you like it, that is what matters.

Personally, I only know one Amelia, so it's not overused.

Also, it's a 'normal' name. Some of the child name suggestions on here are utterly crazy.

Mumofteenandtween · 15/05/2024 06:02

It is a popular name. Which is not surprising - it is lovely. There are loads of nice shortenings too - Amy, Mia, Lia, Mel - so your dd will have options when she is older.

DinnaeFashYersel · 15/05/2024 06:03

It's a lovely name.

KeinLiebeslied54321 · 15/05/2024 06:09

It's a very popular name where I live.
If you like it you like it though, surely, whether it's quite popular or not?
I'm not overly keen on it but it's definitely not the worst name I've heard either.

salamithumbs · 15/05/2024 06:18

It's popular but that doesn't mean every other girl is called Amelia... In 2021 it was the second most popular name for girls in England and Wales - 3,164 named Amelia out of 304,660 girls. So around 1 percent!
I think there are a lot of strong opinions on the baby names boards because some people have a special interest in names, but the result is, it's mainly people with a particularly positive/ negative opinion who bother posting. Mumsnetters who feel indifferent to a name will be less inclined to respond. Similarly, most people in real life wouldn't feel strongly one way or the other about a name, especially a name as widely used as Amelia. And as pps have said, it's widely used because a lot of people like it!

CelesteCunningham · 15/05/2024 06:22

SoLookUpTonight · 15/05/2024 05:10

It’s a lovely name, that’s why it’s popular.

Exactly this.

I would think exactly nothing about the name if introduced to a little Amelia. Perfectly lovely, normal name.

Cally62 · 15/05/2024 06:27

I named my first DD Amelia 38 years ago.
It wasn't so popular way back then.
It's such a lovely name.
Who cares if it's popular now.
You use whatever name you like, popular or not.

WaitingForMojo · 15/05/2024 06:29

I have four dc and none of them have been at school with an Amelia. I know one, and she’s an adult.

cuckyplunt · 15/05/2024 06:30

I have had an Olivia for over 20 years. I think it’s a beautiful name. Amelia is also beautiful, it doesn’t matter what other people think, if you love a name then use it.
