Is Amelia really that bad?

We named our DC Amelia because it worked well with English speakers, DH's non-western background and also my heritage. We get lots of compliments for it too. But then the other day I read a thread on MN about naming a baby Amelia. And it sounds like it's a very overused name. I'm so sad. I really didn't realise it was so overdone and common right now.

YANBU - Amelia is a nice name
YABU - Amelia is a rubbish name

Lol don't worry OP I read that thread and have an Amber which apparently is a 'chavvy name' according to some of the posters.....we really are not 😅. Each to their own 😁.

lol what a strange response, to be that judgey because someone chose a popular name. “Couldn’t think outside the box” 😂😂what obscure and original name did you give your child?

I couldn’t possibly say as there were only 40 registered with her name in England, Scotland and Wales in the year she was born. It’s doubled now nearly 12 years later, so still not a name you come across often.

Pipsquiggle · 15/05/2024 10:13

I have voted YABU as it is a really common name. It's lovely but there are a lot about.

A 20 second google search, came back with this , showing that Amelia was the second most common name in the last year. It's been in the top 10 for numerous years.
There are 2 of them in both my DC's classes

I have an Amelia. She’s the only one in her class. There are however two Martha’s and two Theodora’s. I really wouldn’t pay attention to what people say on Mumsnet about names being too popular / common.

SpidersAreShitheads · 15/05/2024 10:14

My DD is called Daisy. When I was pregnant it was quite a rare name, I didn’t know of anyone with a child named Daisy.

Turns out I must have been connected to a hive mind as loads of mums from around the same time also called their DD Daisy 😂🤦🏻‍♀️

I still love the name.

Amelia is also a lovely name. It makes me think of the Enid Blyton character Amelia Jane that I used to read as a child 😂

I really wouldn’t worry what other people do. Honestly, you’ll spend your life tying yourself in knots over everything 💐

Plosperous · 15/05/2024 10:18

It's a lovely name. I don't know a single Amelia. I didn't realise it was that common.

Thank you @favouriteyellowsocks and @MonsteraMama already feeling a little better.
@MonsteraMama your post really made me chuckle x

Looks like statistically it was the second most popular girl name on the most recent records (2021) so it’s not rare, but that means lots of people love it! I think it’s a beautiful name

It a lovely name.

Popularity also totally depends on where you live. I have twin girls and one of them has what was the most popular girls name the year they born - she never had another in her class the whole way through school, but now has 4 others in her group at uni!

Some of the name suggestions on the MN name board would be outlandish for a pet, let alone a child so don’t take that to heart.

89redballoons · 15/05/2024 10:22

It's a really nice name. It is popular, but is that really a problem as long as you like it?

Also, what's popular across the whole population has much less impact than what's popular among the children your family knows. For what it's worth, my eldest has a name that's outside the top 300, and my youngest has a name in the top 20. We've met two other children with same name as my eldest and not met a little one with the same name as my younger one yet.

lugeanjaam · 15/05/2024 10:22

My daughter is an Amelia, I love it. She was born in 2009 and I can only remember one other Amelia in primary and maybe 2 in high school.

If you love it use it, I think it's beautiful and timeless

VJBR · 15/05/2024 10:25

Our children's names are all quite popular or maybe common. We chose them so they would work in several languages/countries. I love all their names and don't care what other people think.

SplitFountainPen · 15/05/2024 10:26

It was only overdone about 10-15 years back, I don't think it's overly common now. There's far more lilies/bellas

Pottedpalm · 15/05/2024 10:30

PurpleChrayn · 15/05/2024 06:32

It's a bit whiny and it means "no limbs" but a lot of people like it and us it.

Oh behave! That’s the meaning of a medical term but how many people are going to know that, unless they look it up for something spiteful to say.
It has other meanings from the root of the word.

JustEatTheOneInTheBallPit · 15/05/2024 10:41

BeardieWeirdie · 15/05/2024 08:50

YABU if you went for BJ! 😅

How dare you? How dare you assume I would call my beautiful little girl "BJ".

I called her Deep Throat.

Peppermintytea · 15/05/2024 10:50

It's a nice, normal name. I like Mimi as an abbreviation.

notanothernana · 15/05/2024 10:57

I have an Amelia, named over 20 years ago. Thought it was unusual. Went to baby group, two more there. When she went to nursery, another one. At primary two more in her class.

I never thought it would take off, but it did. Fuck it, I love the name.

Mirabai · 15/05/2024 10:59

It’s such a pretty name I’ve always liked it.

Yuja · 15/05/2024 11:03

My DD has a name that Mumsnet hates and says it won't work on a grown up. I don't even slightly care because I love the name (and so does she!) Don't worry about it, you choose the name you like for your own child.

notanothernana · 15/05/2024 11:05

Just looked at list of most popular names for last 20 years. When I chose it it was 25th and by 2012 it was top. Has been up there ever since!

PuppetQueen · 15/05/2024 11:05

It's a really pretty name! And although it's popular, I don't think it's overdone. I have kids in primary and secondary and I only know of two Amelias (and one of them is in her twenties!).

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 15/05/2024 11:07

It was my mum's middle name and I think it's beautiful.

Okaaaay · 15/05/2024 11:09

It’s a beautiful name. We didn’t use it as it was popular when my DD was born (based on ONS data). Talked to my daughter about it last night and we laughed as, despite its popularity, there hasn’t been another Amelia in any of the three schools my children have been to. Don’t give it another thought.

wintersgold · 15/05/2024 11:11

It's a perfectly normal name. Use it if you like it

Annasoror · 15/05/2024 11:31

It's a gorgeous name.
I think it's perplexing that anyone writes about 'thinking outside the box' for a child's name. Why should you have to prove yourself by thinking outside the box? Just give your child the name that you find most beautiful for them.
Also these things go in waves. There were five of us in a class of 25 at school, who all had the same name. The other day I met someone with this name, who was gobsmacked because, in her mid thirties, I was the first person she'd ever met who had the same name as her.

CactusMactus · 15/05/2024 11:37

People will always find a stick to hit you with - I gave my eldest a unique name and an old friend of mine was over the moon when she came across another child with the same name... called me up to basically tell me I wasn't that original (I didn't know this other child or care in anyway!).
Move on...
