Is Amelia really that bad?

We named our DC Amelia because it worked well with English speakers, DH's non-western background and also my heritage. We get lots of compliments for it too. But then the other day I read a thread on MN about naming a baby Amelia. And it sounds like it's a very overused name. I'm so sad. I really didn't realise it was so overdone and common right now.

YANBU - Amelia is a nice name
YABU - Amelia is a rubbish name

I really don't think it's that overused. I've only met one in my whole life. She's now 20.

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 15/05/2024 07:25

I love it, if it’s overused then there is a reason why- people like it

WaltzingWaters · 15/05/2024 07:25

It’s overused because it’s a lovely name. Don’t worry about it.

Chickenpoxareshitty · 15/05/2024 07:25

I love the name Amelia, it’s popular for a reason

MaryBeardsShoes · 15/05/2024 07:27

People are mental about baby names on here. So try-hard. Amelia is lovely, these days I think of it as a classic!

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 15/05/2024 07:29

I voted wrongly. Amelia is a lovely name.

Whycantiwinmillionsandsquillions · 15/05/2024 07:30

Honestly the top 10 names are not even that common.
There is such a wide variety of names now that it doesn’t matter.
Yes it’s not unusual but neither are many of the so called ‘unique’ names parents think they have chosen.

Willmafrockfit · 15/05/2024 06:49

i nearly chose it for my dd but didnt as i knew it would become Amy

I have never heard an Amelia become amy. The 4 I know are all called Amelia.

It's a bit whiny and it means "no limbs" but a lot of people like it and us it.

Actually, it means "industrious".

Whycantiwinmillionsandsquillions · 15/05/2024 07:32

Also yes to the try hard names!
I come across lots of parents and the try hard names make me smile to myself, especially those that nobody will ever spell correctly.

Notellinganyone · 15/05/2024 07:43

I prefer the Emilia spelling. It’s a bit ubiquitous now but fine.

Solidlump · 15/05/2024 07:48

I don't think I've ever met an Amelia.
If I hear the name the association that jumps into my head is Amelia Earhart.
So I associate it with a strong innovative individual woman. And that can't be bad.
Plus I think it's a really pleasing name in its own right.

RomeoMcFlourish · 15/05/2024 07:11

It’s popularity must vary massively depending on where you live - I’ve only ever known one Amelia, and there’s definitely not any young ones at DC’s school.

I agree. I'd never met an Amelia until one started at my work last year and she must be about 30.

My daughter's name has been described on Mumsnet as 'meh', 'wishy-washy' and 'nothingy' and yet irl we've had loads of compliments. People are more likely to be brutally honest online.

I grew up with a very rare name and it sounds a bit dramatic but it shaped my life really negatively and I still have a complex about it and since when I hear it - which is increasingly often as it's become quite popular now. I'd have done anything to be a Katie or Sarah.

CruCru · 15/05/2024 07:50

Amelia is a nice name.

The problem with baby names is it becomes a mission to find a name that everyone likes but which hardly anyone has used. Which isn’t possible.

Needygo · 15/05/2024 07:54

It is extremely popular but is a lovely name

PurpleChrayn · 15/05/2024 06:32

It's a bit whiny and it means "no limbs" but a lot of people like it and us it.

It’s “meaning” isn’t no limbs. It is the name of a syndrome where suffers are missing limbs but that’s not its meaning as a name.

Pipecleanerrevival · 15/05/2024 08:03

I like it. But if I didn’t like it and preferred Hildegarde it shouldn’t affect you at all.

btw I have a name which is very rarely used in this side of the world . It’s a pain in the hole having to repeat it six times to everyone I meet.

PieFaces · 15/05/2024 08:03

It’s beautiful. I know only one who is 20

JustEatTheOneInTheBallPit · 15/05/2024 08:03

According to Mumsnet:

My name is frilly; my husband’s name is boring; my eldest’s name sounds like a sex act; my middle child’s name makes one think of a black man; and my youngest’s name is too “of the moment”.

We all get along just fine with our Mumsnet-proclaimed shit names. And so too will Amelia. Which is a lovely name. I know 3 - one of them is 39, one of them is 15 and one of them is 1. Therefore, it’s pretty classic!

MumbleOrange · 15/05/2024 08:09

It is a nice normal name. Don’t give it a second thought!

Just to add, it reminds me of Naughty Amelia Jane by Enid Blyton who I loved and wanted to be!

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 15/05/2024 08:11

My DD is Amelia and she's 16. It is popular going through school but it's a beautiful name. I think she's only one of 2 Amelia's in her year at the moment. Smile

NewYorkDilemma · 15/05/2024 08:11

I don't know any Amelias-none in my daughters year whose in reception and there's 90 kids in her year! X

GatherlyGal · 15/05/2024 08:14

Don't sweat it OP.

There is no single thing in the world that mumsnetters will all agree on.

My name came up on here the other day. It is not that common and I really like it but bloody hell it got a slating!

You chose it because you like it who cares what some people you will never meet think about it.

PoppyCherryDog · 15/05/2024 08:16

It’s a lovely name, just popular atm probably because it’s a lovely name.

It didn’t make our list but we did have Emilia on it. And if our next baby is a girl it’ll be a strong contender.
