To be sick of people calling everything a 'hack'?

TerfsUpSurfsUp · 09/05/2024 20:37

Why is everything suddenly a hack?
Just watched a video about a 'Disney land park hack'

What was it? Taking a massive churro and breaking it in half for 2 small kids.
How is that a fucking hack? It's just common sense??

I agree, people call something that's normal, which everyone else does a hack these days, drives me mad

Youcannotbeseriousreally · 09/05/2024 20:59

I saw an insta post the other day claiming to solve your clothes drying problems.

SHE PUT HER CLOTHES ON A WASHING LINE LIKE IT WAS NEW NEWS.

Fucking idiot, needed to wait for a free washing line before she knew that drying your clothes outside worked well. Honestly; I had to unfollow. What a shameless dickhead!

YABU - I have a number of hacks and they really improve my life.

Want to have a drink? Go in the kitchen and make yourself a drink.
Want to get somewhere? Get in your car and drive there or alternatively (because a good hack always has a couple of ways of doing things) walk or get public transport if available.
Want to speak to someone who isnt immediately with you? Phone them and talk to them or go round and visit them, using the hack above about getting somewhere.

I have tons more.

@soupfiend you should set up a channel on shit-tock immediately so that we can all benefit from your wisdom

TwelveAngryWhiskers · 09/05/2024 21:03

If the ring pull on a tin breaks off, you can use a tin opener

(I was reading reviews of cat food last week where one reviewer said she had to throw several tins away for this reason Confused)

Bananalanacake · 09/05/2024 21:03

I preferred the word tip.

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 09/05/2024 21:04

Tips. They used to be tips. But now they're hacks, to make them sound new and interesting.

A hack is going for a jaunt on horseback.

Judgejudysno1fan · 09/05/2024 21:05

The worse one is CHEAT CODES

CHEAT CODES TO MAKEUP
HUHHHHH

GrumpyOldCrone · 09/05/2024 21:08

Agreed.
See also: curate, used for contexts other than museums and galleries.
And fabrication as a synonym for fabric, e.g. ‘this shirt is available in a cotton fabrication’. No it isn’t!

Well I see that someone has already stolen my washing line idea.

Ive got more though, keeping dry by using an umbrella, or double hack, a raincoat with a hood and an umbrella?

Need to get in the house? Let yourself in using the front door key and handle.

Catza · 09/05/2024 21:08

Yep, makes my eye twitch. I've just seen a gem on apartment therapy IG where they recommend wrapping a t-shirt around your face to block the light when taking a nap and calling it a hack. They got destroyed in comments.

StormingNorman · 09/05/2024 21:10

I prefer it to tip. Tip always makes me think of penises.

TerfsUpSurfsUp · 09/05/2024 21:11

It's not even a tip though is it? Breaking a large snack in half for 2 kids?

OP posts:
Ifailed · 09/05/2024 21:12

Tip always makes me think of penises.

I think you may have a problem.
I've got a hack for that.

TheChosenTwo · 09/05/2024 21:13

@soupfiend these are very Viz Top Tips! Excellent ideas 😂

VestibuleVirgin · 09/05/2024 21:14

I remember when a hack was a seedy journalist!
Or a walk in the countryside on a horse

menopausalmare · 09/05/2024 21:15

In my day 'hacks' were called tips or hints. I suppose hack sounds more dramatic.....?

OfDragonsDeep · 09/05/2024 21:17

My 8 year old says this all the time, drives me insane

Elieza · 09/05/2024 21:21

Horsey people refer to going for a ride around the local area on a horse as 'a hack'. This word has been used for decades.

Annoys me that this word has now been changed to mean something else that half the time isn't even what it's supposed to be....

Oh great...now that's all I can think of.

BodenCardiganNot · 09/05/2024 21:31

Add ick to hack.
People are just becoming amoeba brains.

StMarieforme · 09/05/2024 21:34

Drives me insane!
I love Khaby Lame who deadpan takes the proverbial out of them though! And his back story 😊😊

User284732 · 09/05/2024 21:36

You are not wrong. My 7 year old son tried to tell me a 'life hack' when I burnt toast the other day. It was scraping it with a knife... Clearly this kid has watched too much YouTube.

ebts · 09/05/2024 21:40

One of my favourite Top Tips from Viz was a cheap way of getting a personalised car registration number plate:
Simply change your name to fit the initials on the number plate you already have!

onlyconnect · 09/05/2024 21:41

Soupfiend you made me laugh out loud
