To be sick of people calling everything a 'hack'?

TerfsUpSurfsUp · 09/05/2024 20:37

Why is everything suddenly a hack?
Just watched a video about a 'Disney land park hack'

What was it? Taking a massive churro and breaking it in half for 2 small kids.
How is that a fucking hack? It's just common sense??

I preferred the word tip.

Me too! I remember when things that were actually useful were called either "Top Tips" or "Handy Tips". "Hacks" gets on my nerves a bit these days!

Not as bad as the obsession of applying tons of make up on public transport. Why on earth do people want to watch this and why doesn't anyone on said bus or train say anything?

I watched a young woman doing her make-up on the train. She had a huge eyeshadow palette and loads of brushes. I found it entertaining to watch her and fascinating that she obviously didn't care that people were watching this normally private activity. Not something I'd want to do in public, but I can't see any reason to say anything.

I prefer it to tip. Tip always makes me think of penises.

I think you must be muddling them with ‘knobs’.

Blubbled · 10/05/2024 14:41

Ah Viz Top Tips, lololol! They always told you to "simply" do whatever it was!

And while we’re at it, I’d like to line up and shoot every single instagrammer who taps their hideous fake nails on every one of the 75 products they’re applying to their face.

I don’t do Instagram but I applaud your public-spirited sentiment!

Glittertwins · 10/05/2024 14:45

The hacks are almost as bad as POV!

Bulkypeepants · 10/05/2024 15:49

They're not just hacks, they're 'life hacks'

Grrrrr 🤬

EmpressSoleil · 10/05/2024 16:04

The one that annoys me is using "reset" instead of just what it is, tidying! It's all kitchen reset, living room reset etc.

No you're not doing anything revolutionary. You're just tidying up as countless generations before you have.

RightOnTheEdge · 10/05/2024 19:07

'X celeb breaks silence’ over something that happened yesterday
Oh yes! @kierenthecommunity this one drives me mad.
Celebrities saying perfectly mundane things are always "Breaking their silence!"
Hmm

HoneyButterPopcorn · 10/05/2024 19:12

Only second in irritation to ‘I was today years old…’ I mean what the hell dies that mean? And it’s always something really dumb and obvious…

YABU - I have a number of hacks and they really improve my life.

Want to have a drink? Go in the kitchen and make yourself a drink.
Want to get somewhere? Get in your car and drive there or alternatively (because a good hack always has a couple of ways of doing things) walk or get public transport if available.
Want to speak to someone who isnt immediately with you? Phone them and talk to them or go round and visit them, using the hack above about getting somewhere.

I have tons more.

These are brilliant, you have changed my life

isthismylifenow · 10/05/2024 19:28

This week I was told there is a hack to using my colander when I drain potatoes/veg.

And for using my hair straighteners.

I've been using both of these fine the whole of my adult life, so I don't think I'm going to use them the wrong way around just because that is now apparantly a hack.

🙈

I don’t mind that so much. The one that really annoys me is

Allllllllllllll the <insert noun here>

Well I see that someone has already stolen my washing line idea.

Ive got more though, keeping dry by using an umbrella, or double hack, a raincoat with a hood and an umbrella?

Need to get in the house? Let yourself in using the front door key and handle.

@soupfiend
No don’t give all of your hacks away for free!
You could be a hacks influencer and get loads of freebie’s in return for your wisdom.

Hohofortherobbers · 09/05/2024 22:15

All these hacks drive me mad. Always accompanied by the taunting headline 'you've been doing it wrong!' when some Australian mother explains how she keeps her oven trays clean...... Piss off!!

i refuse to read or watch anything that claims I've been doing something wrong. I mean, I'm 43, if I've been doing something wrong, clearly I've managed to survive somehow so don't need it now.

MargaretThursday · 10/05/2024 19:49

My favourite hack had a title along the lines of:

"Influencer shares her packed lunch hack and the internet is AMAZED".

It was putting the drink bottle into the freezer to act as an ice pack. Dm did this back in the late 70s when the bottle went into the ice box overnight.

I'll also tell you it wasn't that great, because the condensation got over everything leaving it soggy, and the squash defrosts quicker than the water, so it's unpleasantly strong at first, and then totally watery at the end. And either defrosts too quickly so it's warm by the time you drink, or hasn't defrosted enough to give you a decent drink at lunch time (or the rest of the day either). The number of times we all got a dribble of pure squash in the bottom of a cup for lunch and then half a cup of water just before we left. I never realised until I was an adult why days out left me frequently with a migraine-due to dehydration.

Hack - slang for journalists; horse ride; illegally breaking into someone else's computer / phone or other technology with software....

Most 'hacks' now are just common sense and have been known for decades (or longer)!

I also hate the use of 'dupe' for a cheaper copy (usually perfume, skin care or designer item of clothing, footwear or bag). Dupe means 'to deceive or trick' (also defraud, swindle, hoax, hoodwink or cheat).

It's short for duplicate too

I actually find that helpful as it's putting it back to how it was, rather than tidying EVERYTHING away which feels impossible.

Want to be awake at a certain time in the morning? Set an alarm before you go to sleep.

TarantinoIsAMisogynist · 10/05/2024 21:25

It's not "people" that do this, it's just attention seeking wannabe influencers on social media. Pay less attention to them and your life will be infinitely better.

Wheredidallthecowboysgo · 10/05/2024 21:42

Definitely an influencer/ social media thing that has annoyed me for ages. Bloody hacks!

ScottBakula · 10/05/2024 22:43

Not a hack but this gets on my nerves a lot !
@Mnhq are guilty of it this time .
Just how did it literally save lives once let alone several times? * *
