To think level crossings need to be banned

Or at least all monitored by CCtv at all times? I just feel they cause awful risk to both people on food and in cars.

Only if the people on foot or in cars are total idiots.

vodkaredbullgirl · 05/05/2024 12:18

???? Food

PeppermintParty · 05/05/2024 12:18

What would you suggest as an alternative? Diverting all traffic for miles to find another route? Or build bridges in place of each of them, potentially costing billions? I don't think they are dangerous, unless some idiot decides to try and cut across when the gates are lowered.

sandrapinchedmysandwich · 05/05/2024 12:20

Yes and let's also ban cars as they are dangerous and food as we might choke and let's tell those scary oceans we want to ban them too as people drown in them 🙄

RosesAndHellebores · 05/05/2024 12:24

Yes, let's ban them. We can just give way at the tracks, look right and left and judge for ourselves. The alternative is?

lljkk · 05/05/2024 12:24

CCTV won't stop being being reckless.
Major huge cost to replace many of them.

We can't just ban things because stupid people can't follow simple instructions.

2dogsandabudgie · 05/05/2024 12:27

It's not the crossings that cause risk to people but the people who don't use them properly.

SabbatWheel · 05/05/2024 12:27

They are perfectly safe as long as people don’t try to dodge through once the lights and sirens start going. Lived in a village with a LC for donkeys years and we all were taught to treat it with respect.

TwattyMcFuckFace · 05/05/2024 12:27

They don't cause risk to people.

People who don't use them properly cause risk to themselves and others.

Just like roads, or do you think we should get rid of those too?

ReluctantSwimMum · 05/05/2024 12:28

They probably all have CCTV. We've all seen the ads with videos of near misses. But CCTV like that is only useful after an event. There should be more government safety campaigns and education on safer use of level crossings.

sanityisamyth · 05/05/2024 12:28

Some people are pricks. They should be the ones who are banned!

Mairzydotes · 05/05/2024 12:29

Wait until you find out some level crossings don't even have barriers.

gamerchick · 05/05/2024 12:30

Why? Because some people are idiots?

PuttingDownRoots · 05/05/2024 12:30

The principle is no different to crossing a road.
Stop, look, listen.

enjoyingscience · 05/05/2024 12:30

How do you propose dealing with the places roads need to cross rail lines?

Shade17 · 05/05/2024 12:39

Idiots taking themselves out of the gene pool is no bad thing.

pocketaces · 05/05/2024 12:40

Don't see an issue. If someone dodges a barrier and gets hit by a train it's just natural selection in action

Agii · 05/05/2024 12:41

We cannot ban eveit

Yep!!

Agii · 05/05/2024 12:42

We cannot ban everything that has some level of risk.
I feel that England is already a nanny country as it is, by removing the stuff that poses a risk to someone who lacks basic common sense.

Sirzy · 05/05/2024 12:44

People cause the risk to people by being stupid and not following the clear warnings

RobBeckettsGiantTeeth · 05/05/2024 12:44

I dunno, I think if people are so stupid they need the government to tell them not to cross in front of a train that they're never going to win an argument with, then taking themselves out of the gene pool probably isn't a bad idea. As long as they don't take anyone else with them.

icallitasplodge · 05/05/2024 12:46

Don’t agree.

we have several here in our borough. maybe 6? They are all monitored by both humans, cctv, computers, there are pedestrian bridges over them and accessible tunnels underneath them, there is NO REASON at all for a human or car to cross the barrier as it’s coming down except for impatience. Of all the accidents that ever occur, they are almost always a car pushing through or someone getting whacked by a barrier coming down as they thought they’d chance it.

Ban impatience.

Topofthemountain · 05/05/2024 12:46

Apart from when the gates don't come across (other reports indicated this). These ones rollover as opposed to barriers that come down.

Level crossing are one of my irrational fears, but they are a necessary evil. I always look left and right before I drive over, even controlled ones.
