Gas hobs - Yay or nay

Spinachandcheese1 · 19/04/2024 13:07

In the Uk so many people have/prefer gas hobs for cooking instead of the electric ceramic ones.

I really don’t get it.

We ended up having a gas hob only because the house we bought had one and we never prioritised it as something that needs changing.

Its been 3 years now and I sick of cleaning all little corners and attach and reattach gas hob items, so high maintenance.

Am I unreasonable?

YABU - Gas hobs are much better

YANBU - Electric ceramic hobs forever! Just wipe clean a smooth surface and all done.

Got induction too, never going back to gas!

Nannyfannybanny · 19/04/2024 18:25

I always had gas hobs and ovens. When we moved house, there was an electric oven. Took some getting used to. Last house I had a big fancy double range, which wouldn't fit here. Tiny kitchen, was going to go for a gas hob because it was cheap, got induction. I love it. It's neat, flat on the worktop, gets a bit of glass cleaner. My last place, inspite of fancy extractor monthly cleaning spotlights, everything. I don't do a lot of frying, everything is so much cleaner now. Ok,if you don't cook much! I'm in my 70s old schooler, scratch and batch!

Not a gas fan here. Induction is much safer for my ADHD teens to cook on apart from anything else

ScarletWitchM · 19/04/2024 18:49

Got an induction hob when we had new kitchen 5 years ago and I hate it with a passion - I’m getting it changed to gas asap. Gas hobs have more control of temperature and less risk of damaging in my experience

fromaytobe · 19/04/2024 18:55

A gas hob is the business if you ask me. I wouldn't want to cook on anything else.

StJulian2023 · 19/04/2024 19:05

I‘m renovating a house and about to get the gas cut off as getting air source heat pump instead, so no more gas hob for me next year. I’ve always liked them but had no idea how polluting they were. I’m sure I’ll adjust in time!

WeightoftheWorld · 19/04/2024 19:07

YANBU, we have electric and much prefer it. As you say, so much easier to clean.

Floralnomad · 19/04/2024 19:09

I like a gas hob but my husband cleans it

Ponderingwindow · 19/04/2024 19:11

I hate cooking on electric.

we had a rental with electric and I convinced the landlord to let me install a gas hob at my expense.

When we built this house, none of the houses in the area had gas hobs. Thankfully there were gas lines we could tap into. I paid to have the house plans modified just so I could have gas instead of electric. If I couldn’t, we would have kept looking for a different house

dh wants to get some flat top gadget that cooks with special pans and he is replacing the gas hob with some modern electric monstrosity over my dead body.

Ponderingwindow · 19/04/2024 19:14

Oh and I know the recent worries about air quality and gas, but my nerdy husband has installed air quality monitors in our house. The tiniest things set them off, like me taking one of my medications, but cooking with the gas hob does not.

Createausername1970 · 19/04/2024 19:17

I always had a gas hob. Loved it.

Moved to a house that had no gas supply in the kitchen, too much faff to put it in so opted very begrudgingly for an induction.

I wouldn't go back now.

My only issue is that my mum's old pans that DS and I made gingerbread in every Christmas, didn't work on the induction hob 😭. But all my other every day saucepans and frying pans did.

MuggedByReality · 19/04/2024 19:18

Gas hobs are much more controllable & therefore better for cooking. I have neither the time nor the inclination to bother with detailed cleaning of the burner. Life’s too short. I just clean round them.

SirenSays · 19/04/2024 19:18

Induction all the way. With gas you're supposed to open a window every time you use it.

RawBloomers · 19/04/2024 19:22

For a long, long time electric hobs of all descriptions were lack lustre compared to gas unless you had money to burn (pun intended). Generally weak and slow to adjust. They were also all you’d see in a commercial kitchen so dominated the semi-pro ranges. Gas got a very strong reputation for being the best in the kitchen.

Over the last 20 or so years that’s really changed but gas is only recently getting widely challenged on that front. And now the health issues with gas are coming out I suspect it will soon fall further from favour.

I would get an induction hob if I were buying a new cooker today, though I’d miss the ability to char a pita or pepper over real flame.

marlfield · 19/04/2024 19:34

Nothing but gas for me! You can't beat it for instant temperature control.

biscuitcat · 19/04/2024 19:41

I love cooking on gas - induction hobs feel a bit soulless to me, I can't get as excited by induction cooking as a proper flame. And as others have said, if you get a lot of power cuts, gas is so practical.
