Gas hobs - Yay or nay

Spinachandcheese1 · 19/04/2024 13:07

In the Uk so many people have/prefer gas hobs for cooking instead of the electric ceramic ones.

I really don’t get it.

We ended up having a gas hob only because the house we bought had one and we never prioritised it as something that needs changing.

Its been 3 years now and I sick of cleaning all little corners and attach and reattach gas hob items, so high maintenance.

Am I unreasonable?

YABU - Gas hobs are much better

YANBU - Electric ceramic hobs forever! Just wipe clean a smooth surface and all done.

Induction. Ceramic unresponsive, gas inefficient, bad for lungs and expensive

AGlinnerOfHope · 19/04/2024 13:31

Need a decent powered one, I think.

I don't know what brand of hob you have, but IME induction hobs are much faster than gas plus just as controllable.

I have a Bosch. I’m getting used to it now but I don’t love it.

Gas is more of a pain to clean, but I much prefer it for cooking on. And you can do things like toast a tortilla on them, which you can't do on an electric or induction hob.

What do you mean by toast a tortilla, as I think I do this all the time in my induction hob…

kelsaycobbles · 19/04/2024 13:33

Modern electric induction hob

More controlled than my old gas

Really fast to boil up

Potential to be better for environment

Definitely better

Moonshine5 · 19/04/2024 13:33

Depends if you're "into" cooking. If you are gas all the way. The cleaning doesn't come in to it.

You would never see a professional kitchen with out it.

BIWI · 19/04/2024 13:35

Not true! All the chefs at Le Manoir aux Quat Saisons use induction.

LenaLamont · 19/04/2024 13:35

I love my gas hob and am in a constant argument with DH and DD who want to swap it for an induction.

I use to the char aubergines and peppers all the time. We eat a lot of middle eastern vegetarian food, and cooking the vey over an open plam adds such a lot of flavour to the dishes. A cooks blowtorch comes nowhere near the same effect.

The same for heating through chapattis or flour tortillas - In just toss it on the flame for a few seconds each side.

I uderstand that it's much more of a faff to clean than an induction, but the flavour results are worth it to me.

Ceramic and old electric hobs are just useless. I don't know how people can be bothered with them.

My ultimate position is that when DH and DD do the majority of the meals, they an decide what type of hob we have. While it still falls to me 80% of the time, we're sticking with gas.

They do cook so much better imo, I have an induction now and yea it’s easier to clean but it’s also a pain in the arse when you want to use both sides at ones and it no where near as fast or as easy to control as my old gas one

You possibly have a poor induction hob as this is not my experience at all. I think it is a power thing as in when you have 2 rings on it splits the load. My induction had to be hard wired in on a 32 amp breaker rather than a 13amp plug. Lots of induction hobs are on normal UK plugs. Mine was installed over a decade ago and I did a lot of research at the time re power because we needed to be able to use more than one ring on a high setting.

suburburban · 19/04/2024 13:38

Love my gas hob. Not keen on electric tbh

I've only just learned about the health risks of cooking with gas. So it's a no from me and we are getting rid of ours: https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2023/jan/15/gas-stoves-pollution-alternatives

I do think there is some bias in that report because fossil fuels are frowned upon now

Moonshine5 · 19/04/2024 13:41

True @BIWI I should have been more accurate re: chefs kitchens.
If you're cooking using a wok or making a chapatti gas is the first choice.
For the record I have both induction and gas combined and use them as needed.
Get what suits you OP

Youzaname · 19/04/2024 13:46

I will only have gas as it feels right and properly controllable to me. I don’t think electric or ceramic are any good, they’re horrible to use. It’s like trying to cook with your eyes closed, or trying to scratch an itch with mittens on!
Never tried induction.

AllTheMiniEggs · 19/04/2024 13:47

I love my gas hob. I'd never change. I had an induction hob in a holiday cottage for a fortnight and I hated it.

It was a brand new house and brand new kitchen and a Bosch hob, it’s hardwired. I just don’t think it’s that great. I hate that it will switch itself off if it gets wet and it’s 5 pan but if you use them all one side is much better than the other. As I said, I’m getting used to it: but I don’t love and rave it like some of you seem to!

Koptforitagain · 19/04/2024 13:48

Induction for me.

Summerbay23 · 19/04/2024 13:48

Induction 100%

OpusGiemuJavlo · 19/04/2024 13:48

Gas is by far the best.

Instant control of heat output, you can literally see the flame size.

You can't brown marshmallows on a ceramic or induction hob.

If you don't cook much or only cook very simple things I can see a ceramic or induction hob might be easier but I find them a nightmare to use for proper cooking. Too much lag between deciding a pan needs more or less heat and the heat actually changing. All the induction hobs I have used will only respond to the touch controls if your hands are clean and dry - not always the case when cooking a complex meal! And if a pan simmers over it's a lot more than a quick wipe as it gets burned on a lot worse than with gas.

Our gas hob isn’t particularly difficult to clean. You may have a bad design.

Gas hobs are so much better for proper cooking.....much better instant control over heat and flame size. I loathe ceramic hobs because they are a nightmare to keep clean and also not as manageable for cooking.

This. Instant heat and so very controllable.

littlegrebe · 19/04/2024 13:51

We have electric because there's no gas supply to our flat. It takes a little longer to heat up than gas but as we aren't running a restaurant that's fine, and the likelihood of accidentally setting fire to something/ourselves is greatly reduced.

Our induction hob is super responsive and has a ‘super power’ type switch to literally almost get an instant boil, and turns down instantly too. I cook from scratch all the time.

I don’t have a problem when things boil over either, it’s still an easy wipe as long as you don’t let it dry on.

Bichonmum · 19/04/2024 14:04

I had always preferred gas, until I got an induction hob. I wouldn't have anything else now.

I have a protective mat over my hob which stays in place even when cooking. It keeps it nice and clean and prevents scratches.

whensmynexthol1day · 19/04/2024 14:10

Appreciate this is a niche perspective! But if you have a defibrillator or pace maker fitted you can't use an induction hob so perhaps thinking about the future proofing aspect particularly if heart issues run in the family

Crumpleton · 19/04/2024 14:13

I've got an induction hob, but for me nothing 'licks' the side of a wok like a gas flame.

IMO making stir fries using an induction hob is not the one.

Idontjetwashthefucker · 19/04/2024 14:16

Gas all the way for me, I don't think induction hobs or any other types work as well as gas. To avoid mess I use a spatter cover
