Gas hobs - Yay or nay

Spinachandcheese1 · 19/04/2024 13:07

In the Uk so many people have/prefer gas hobs for cooking instead of the electric ceramic ones.

I really don’t get it.

We ended up having a gas hob only because the house we bought had one and we never prioritised it as something that needs changing.

Its been 3 years now and I sick of cleaning all little corners and attach and reattach gas hob items, so high maintenance.

Am I unreasonable?

YABU - Gas hobs are much better

YANBU - Electric ceramic hobs forever! Just wipe clean a smooth surface and all done.

Appreciate this is a niche perspective! But if you have a defibrillator or pace maker fitted you can't use an induction hob so perhaps thinking about the future proofing aspect particularly if heart issues run in the family

Well...Not that I have either fitted...but..
I never knew or would have even thought about that.

I prefer a gas hob for cooking and like others said the naked flame comes in handy for certain things like charring aubergine. However I think they are dying out and their are harmful particles from the hob which if you do a lot of cooking probably affect your respiratory health. I think gas hobs do offer good control as well but I think modern induction hobs are getting better.

I think a gas hob is ok to clean but you have to clean it literally every time you use it so nothing gets the chance to build up on it.

JanglingJack · 19/04/2024 14:22

My gas cooker died and I went for induction hob.

I'm getting used to it, but it's a lot of up and down with temperature to find a happy medium, whereas with gas, you'd just use a different sized... (I can't think of the word!) or easily turn it down.

I'll stick with the induction though, I don't have much choice!

Youzaname · 19/04/2024 14:28

Burner I think is the word!

YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME · 19/04/2024 14:29

Due to overhead powerlines, it is really useful for us to have a gas hob, although ovens are electric. We have power cuts at least 3-4 times a year and the weather in the last few years has increased that, so glad we didn't go all electric. Have to mention that it is a hob that uses Calor gas, as no connection to gas in the area and we have oil for heating. As for pollution, I don't use an air fryer due to the issues from the coating on the cooking basket, or certain types of saucepans due to their chemical leech, so each to their own, as practically impossible to avoid all pollution / exposure to nasty chemicals.

LaFidola · 19/04/2024 15:55

Oh great, my gas hob is now something else to worry about!!

How much does it cost to install a standard size induction out of interest?

user1469770863 · 19/04/2024 15:57

completely this!

Birdybox · 19/04/2024 16:00

I loved my gas hob 10 years ago and particularly wanted to replicate it when we moved and redid the kitchen and I did.
We moved again 18 months ago and I planned to replace the existing induction hob with gas when a new kitchen was built but in the 18 months I have changed my mind. The Neff hob in current kitchen is so quick, responsive and clean. I will move it to the new kitchen

Elphame · 19/04/2024 16:04

With the regular power interruptions we get, I would not want to rely solely on electricity, so my gas hob is staying.

Yes no you can boil a kettle on the hob

I have tried induction hob recently but I still prefer gas

TheBirdintheCave · 19/04/2024 16:12

We do a lot of wok cooking so gas all the way here.

I HATE my brother's induction hob. It's either too hot or too cold and not very responsive to the controls. I burn things all the time over at his house but never at mine.

LeaderBee · 19/04/2024 16:16

When I lived at home, I always thought i wanted a gas hob, "they are better".
Yes, they're better than ceramic hobs by a country mile.

I bought my house, the Gas pipe had been capped, I didn't want a shitty ceramic hob because they take ages to heat up and you struggle to control the temperature on them.

I found an induction hob instead! Similar to ceramic, but they work MUCH MUCH faster and the heat is there almost immediately, but they have a flat glass surface for easy cleaning.

Are gas hobs good? Absolutely fantastic! but they're a pain in the arse to clean; Induction does what a ceramic hob does, only 10x better. go for one of those.

AdultReindeer · 19/04/2024 16:16

Gas hobs for me. I love them.

MartinsSpareCalculator · 19/04/2024 16:23

I like a gas hob because the control over the heat is much better. And I like the flexibility of being able to use whatever pans and implements I want. Like sometimes I'll use a Pyrex dish over a low light or flame a tortilla on the hob.

I don't mind cleaning it.

Induction is the only way

But not if you have a pace maker.

stopringingme · 19/04/2024 17:29

Gas hob as there are quite a few power cuts and if they are quite long we can still cook something or heat up water.

BIWI · 19/04/2024 17:37

I love my induction hob - but I do wish that, when we were having the kitchen fitted, that I'd also had a gas burner installed. I'm always aware that if we have a power cut we're stuffed!

NeedWineNow · 19/04/2024 17:38

We've got a gas hob and electric fan oven. We are very prone to power cuts where we live so having a gas hob is a godsend, especially a few years ago when we were without electric for 16 hours which included nearly all of Christmas Eve.

LetYourHairDownClaire · 19/04/2024 13:37

You possibly have a poor induction hob as this is not my experience at all. I think it is a power thing as in when you have 2 rings on it splits the load. My induction had to be hard wired in on a 32 amp breaker rather than a 13amp plug. Lots of induction hobs are on normal UK plugs. Mine was installed over a decade ago and I did a lot of research at the time re power because we needed to be able to use more than one ring on a high setting.

I have no problem using all 4 rings on my induction hob. But
it
's part of a freestanding cooker, so it will be a higher power supply.

Snugglemonkey · 19/04/2024 17:46

minipie · 19/04/2024 13:22

I use a flat cast iron pan on my induction hob to toast tortillas, works a treat

Only thing I’ve found that induction can’t do is burn things directly on the flame like aubergine for baba ganoush. Have to use the BBQ for that.

I also wonder about gas being phased out longer term but doesn’t seem like this will happen soon.

I bought a wee blowtorch to do that.

troppibambini6 · 19/04/2024 18:10

I have just moved from a house with an induction job to a house with gas. I thought I might keep it when we get the kitchen done but after four weeks not a chance.
It's slow.
It's hard to clean
It hard to get the flame on a really low light

I cannot way to get back to induction.

Secondaryappealhelp · 19/04/2024 18:12

We've had them all and gas is by far my favourite, I don't hate any of them though!

NeedthatFridayfeeling · 19/04/2024 18:13

Bloody love induction, so easy to clean, gas is a pain to clean. Having said that we've had a couple of power cuts lately and can still use the gas hob as can ignite with a match. There is an AEG job that has both gas and induction rings, that's my next hob!

YeahComeOnThen · 19/04/2024 18:19

TheFlis · 19/04/2024 13:27

Just switched from gas to induction and it is dreamy! Just as responsive as gas and on the Power setting, much hotter than gas if you want a quick blast to bring something to the boil. And the cleaning!! Nothing to take apart, just a quick wipe with a damp cloth. I would never go back.

@TheFlis

which induction hob did you buy??

im going to get one for the new kitchen but heard mixed reviews.

TheFlis · 19/04/2024 18:21

@YeahComeOnThen We have a range cooker from Stoves (S900ei) very impressed with it so far.
