I am being unreasonable to post it here but I feel like it’s a public service announcement and should therefore be shared as widely as possible!
I have a really healthy diet with little to no processed food in my meals but I have a really terrible sugar addiction. Daily I would probably eat three or four chocolate bars, biscuits and a pudding and probably ice cream or a pastry as well. Because I’m naturally slim and eat well outside of this I’ve been kidding myself it’s ok but it’s really not.
I saw an instagram recipe for peanut butter stuffed dates. I bought some organic ones, filled them with 100% PB and rolled them in melted 80% dark chocolate. I know there is sugar in dates but it’s natural and the fibre in the dates means that your blood sugars don’t shoot up, the dark chocolate is also very low sugar. This has honestly been a miracle cure for me! I’m eating three a day. This has completely cured me of the urge for anything else with sugar in, they are so stodgy that I can’t actually eat more than three and they feel completely decadent. For the first time probably in my adult life I’m not craving sugar all day, I’ve had nothing but these dates for three weeks now and it’s actually feeing like a permanent change!
Just wanted to share because I thought I would never be able to kick the habit but I feel so much healthier!

Depressing, I opened this thread full of hope and wonder but I hate dates and peanut butter :(

I suppose I could just stuff some chocolate with more chocolate and then dip it in chocolate, would that work?

Mercurial123 · 19/04/2024 09:54

There are so many people with weird attitudes to food. Anyway, I'm off to eat some perfectly healthy dates despite shock horror the sugar.

DataColour · 19/04/2024 10:07

I bought some lovely medjool dates on the way home yesterday and had 3 stuffed with peanut butter and dark choc for my pudding. So yummy. I think I could easily miss out the dark choc though as the dates were sweet enough.

Crikeyalmighty · 19/04/2024 10:11

When I need a sugar hit I halve 3 red grapes, half a banana and a tablespoon of full fat Greek yoghurt and grate a little bit of dark chocolate over the top - I was pre diabetes a year ago so have been very careful on sugar ever since. I don't like peanut butter, but I do like dates!

Ooo I love Campari. I like it with just soda 😀

I love Campari and soda. I can only have one negroni as I find them a bit sweet. I don’t have a sweet tooth at all, however - it’s butter that is my downfall!

Purpleandredandyellow · 19/04/2024 14:54

I am actually going to try this thank you!

Karmaisagod · 19/04/2024 15:51

@Thewildthingsarewithme I made this on your advice and just had my first one, and can confirm it was DELICIOUS! Thank you. And whoever suggested adding salt - thank you, too).

The litmus test will be this evening after dinner.🤞

Medjool dates are the best for this and though totally missing the point are even better with a small bit of marzipan rather than nut butter in the centre!

Long story but I've got about 5kg of marzipan to use up and you might have just made my day with this suggestion

Mirabai · 19/04/2024 17:16

Love a date or prune stuffed with marzipan.

Three a day is still more sugar than 3x Wispa bars. I'd rather have the Wispas followed by a handful of bran flakes for the fibre Grin

Bran flakes are the devil.

YeahComeOnThen · 19/04/2024 17:58

People can bang on about low glycemic or 'natural sugar'🙄🙄 but my blood sugars would sky rocket eating these.

@Thewildthingsarewithme they're undoubtably better for YOU than the shite you're replacing!!

but sadly it's not a miracle solution for all of us.

Thewildthingsarewithme · 19/04/2024 18:00

@Karmaisagod they are so surprisingly great aren’t they 😂 I’ve found the trick is to get the large medjool dates, like the size of your thumb so they are super stodgy and almost like a pudding, this has stopped me bingeing on them!

Thewildthingsarewithme · 18/04/2024 11:33

@Neverawildchild you pop them in the freezer for thirty mins to harden the chocolate and then in an airtight container in the fridge for three to five days! Ooh thank you @Feelingstrange2 I will have a look 😊

My daughter saw these online and started making them and she’s been exactly the same no craving sweets!

Thewildthingsarewithme · 19/04/2024 18:03

@YeahComeOnThen did you mean to be so rude 😋 they are fruit, as above, people on MN are a different breed, three dates a day would be deemed healthy by any measure. I can see that if you literally have no sugar at all then your blood sugars might rise but it’s all so hyperbolic, the hysteria is crazy all these people’s blood sugars rocketing from eating three dates a day 😂

Yum!

Op is basically saying that there's nothing quite like a dark chocolate ball to suck on as a pick me up.

...

..

How rude.😉

You might wanna add some salt to that!

Tessisme · 18/04/2024 11:54

I'm interested but I'm definitely not googling Bliss Balls

😆😆

I googled it for you! It's fine....

I've been stuffing dates with peanut butter and freezing for ages, bloody lovely - but the dark chocolate may just take them to a new level.

What I've found though is, if I'm in the mindset that I'm really wanting to make the change, and I have my usual craving for something sweet after a meal but am being mindful of what I'm eating, then I'll happily settle for one or two of the date treats. If I'm in self-sabotage mode then no amount of healthier alternatives are going to cut it.

I ADORE frozen dark cherries with vanilla yogurt. Sooo good 😊

CP108 · 19/04/2024 18:23

I can confirm they’re very yummy! I ate loads while I was pregnant 😅👌🏼

Friendshipover5 · 19/04/2024 18:31

Definitely trying these! Recently I’ve been making “nice cream” with frozen bananas and strawberries, it’s so good! You could add a bit of vanilla but I like it just the fruit.

Frozen banana, almond butter, cocoa powder and maybe some Greek yogurt blitzed together is good too.

I can smell the toxicity and eating disorder from here….

EatCrow · 19/04/2024 19:13

Another small tip that might help - whenever I fancy something sweet I suck on a boiled sweet, takes the craving away for me.

NoDought · 19/04/2024 21:20

I will def make these, I eat really healthy then eat a lot of sugar, don’t even know if I crave it just a habit.
