I am being unreasonable to post it here but I feel like it’s a public service announcement and should therefore be shared as widely as possible!
I have a really healthy diet with little to no processed food in my meals but I have a really terrible sugar addiction. Daily I would probably eat three or four chocolate bars, biscuits and a pudding and probably ice cream or a pastry as well. Because I’m naturally slim and eat well outside of this I’ve been kidding myself it’s ok but it’s really not.
I saw an instagram recipe for peanut butter stuffed dates. I bought some organic ones, filled them with 100% PB and rolled them in melted 80% dark chocolate. I know there is sugar in dates but it’s natural and the fibre in the dates means that your blood sugars don’t shoot up, the dark chocolate is also very low sugar. This has honestly been a miracle cure for me! I’m eating three a day. This has completely cured me of the urge for anything else with sugar in, they are so stodgy that I can’t actually eat more than three and they feel completely decadent. For the first time probably in my adult life I’m not craving sugar all day, I’ve had nothing but these dates for three weeks now and it’s actually feeing like a permanent change!
Just wanted to share because I thought I would never be able to kick the habit but I feel so much healthier!

I googled it for you! It's fine....

www.kaylaitsines.com/blogs/recipes/bliss-balls

The recipe I posted upthread is for pretty much this.

This recipe needs more cacao powder otherwise it will be cloyingly sweet.

I can smell the toxicity and eating disorder from here….

🙄

BloodyHellKenAgain · 19/04/2024 22:09

I like the sound of these as i love dates, thanks @Thewildthingsarewithme

Also, I've found that eating bitter, dark chocolate can help in curbing a sweet tooth. When I'm wanting biscuit after biscuit I havd a piece of montezuma dark choc with orange and a coffee. It is sooooo bitter but I read somewhere that biter tastes curb appetites and it does seem to work.
Alternatively I eat lots of salted peanuts 😋

ApplesOnWards · 19/04/2024 22:11

Another one - Greek yoghurt with organic cacao powder.

The most delicious, filling chocolate pudding ever.

And protein!

I found the cure years ago. Stop consuming sugar, and after about a month it’s fine.

But don’t you miss it? It’s one of the joys of life!

IceQueenoftheWest · 20/04/2024 10:24

OP I couldn't stop thinking about your post, I love dates, chocolate and peanut butter, Choc way too much.

I bought the stuff for this yesterday (along with a shitload of chocolate that I ate in teh car on the way home😭) and I just made them - OMFG!

I used Waitrose Organic medjool dates and destoned them, Duchy organic peanut butter and Menier organic dark cooking choc, so no nasty additives and only sugar is in the dates. You are a legend and these are definitely going to be a staple in this house.

they would give me the shits, I have IBS

How nice

Almond butter tastes better than peanut butter.

Does it? I bought a small jar and it was horrible. Sadly can’t remember what make it was, as I realise they may all taste differently.
Unrealistically, I think I was expecting a kind of Bakewell tart flavour, which added to the disappointment

I find dried mango is a really good whole food alternative to sugary snacks. Yes sugary but much better than a chocolate bar.

once bought dried mango dipped in very dark chocolate - years ago, but so good I still remember it. Haven't seen any since (yes I know it would be fairly easy to make aside from not eating the chocolate or mango first)

@Thewildthingsarewithme do you use fresh dates or dried ones?

Thewildthingsarewithme · 21/04/2024 07:19

@ThinWomansBrain fresh ones 😊

How exactly do you pitt, and stuff them, isnt it fiddly?

Do you melt the chocolate?

I 've just been eating dates as dessert.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 21/04/2024 08:22

They sound lovely - except for the peanut butter - I really don’t like it.
Now pondering what else I could stuff them with.

Medjool dates are quite large - split down the length and take out the stone. Spoon in the nut butter and push cut edges together. Dip in chocolate you've melted in the microwave in 20-30 seconds bursts. Once it's started melting you can usually give it a stir and it all melts; you don't want to burn it.

That's exactly how I did it, and it worked perfectly. Three days in, I'm still amazed at how they work at curbing sugar cravings and even appetite in general, @Thewildthingsarewithme. Either those three ingredients are bigger than the sum of their parts, or I'm very suggestible and the novelty value will wear off soon.

Has anyone tried with plain smaller dates? I imagine it would be fiddlier to get the stone out and put the nut butter in?

We can't all like the same things. I have a recipe book that suggests tahini works as an alternative to nut butters. My favourite date filling is pistachio, but I buy them already prepared.

Mirabai · 21/04/2024 16:36

The best way to stop sugar cravings is to stop eating sugar full stop.

If you stop for a while sugar then tastes crazy over-sweet. So it doesn’t just stop sugar cravings it reduces your tolerance for overly sweet stuff.

If I feel like something sweet I generally have fruit or dried fruit or one my Deliciously Ella balls mentioned above.

You can use cashews, pistachios, almonds - roast almond butter or ground almonds - marzipan style but with less sugar, seed mix - sunflower, pumpkin, sesame etc, tahini etc.

sparklyglitterball · 21/04/2024 21:41

Thank you OP - I brought all the ingredients having read your post and made them today. Wow, they're so delicious! The dates are really sweet, but are offset really nicely with the peanut butter and bitter dark chocolate.
