AIBU to tell you I’ve found the miracle cure for excessive sugar consumption

I am being unreasonable to post it here but I feel like it’s a public service announcement and should therefore be shared as widely as possible!
I have a really healthy diet with little to no processed food in my meals but I have a really terrible sugar addiction. Daily I would probably eat three or four chocolate bars, biscuits and a pudding and probably ice cream or a pastry as well. Because I’m naturally slim and eat well outside of this I’ve been kidding myself it’s ok but it’s really not.
I saw an instagram recipe for peanut butter stuffed dates. I bought some organic ones, filled them with 100% PB and rolled them in melted 80% dark chocolate. I know there is sugar in dates but it’s natural and the fibre in the dates means that your blood sugars don’t shoot up, the dark chocolate is also very low sugar. This has honestly been a miracle cure for me! I’m eating three a day. This has completely cured me of the urge for anything else with sugar in, they are so stodgy that I can’t actually eat more than three and they feel completely decadent. For the first time probably in my adult life I’m not craving sugar all day, I’ve had nothing but these dates for three weeks now and it’s actually feeing like a permanent change!
Just wanted to share because I thought I would never be able to kick the habit but I feel so much healthier!

can you think of a way I could adapt this as someone who loves chocolate but hates peanut butter?

Thewildthingsarewithme · 18/04/2024 18:59

@cooroocoocoo mine is definitely psychological, when my parents divorced my mum wouldn’t have sugar in the house, everything was organic and we had no processed foods before people even knew about UPFs, my dad in contrast would only feed us takeaways and then have an unlimited supply of fizzy drinks, chocolate and ice creams, the feast or famine mentality is ingrained in me but this really has worked for me and previously I could easily eat an entire pack of biscuits and still be looking for more sugar. However, I do also know people who have used hypnosis successfully to quit smoking so may be worth a try. Sending you love, it’s horrible feeling so out of control

Great idea though we use figs with peanut butter instead of energy gels when doing long distance running. Much better for the bowel!

Lifeomars · 18/04/2024 19:10

I hate dates, they make me heave, sorry!

Doodleflips · 18/04/2024 19:10

Good for you.
i gave up chocolate for lent, and when I restarted I realised how utterly crap it makes me feel.
I’ve given it up again and I’m happy.

I never understand these people saying ohh, you only live once, or oh, just eat the cake/chocolate, I’d rather not be bored with my food.
Why would you want to eat all that crap and then feel crap?

Almond butter would work just as well :)

Bollocks! If I eat healthy fats like avocados and nuts etc I don’t need your fake dietary knowledge and I can enjoy a protein-filled zero-fat Greek yogurt . Don’t generalise to make yourself feel better.

Avocados and nuts are great, but you’re wrong about the fat free. Full fat does keep
you full for longer.

NigelHarmansNewWife · 18/04/2024 19:14

Forest Feasts make them with milk chocolate. Boots sell them. Dark chocolate triggers migraine for me. I also like the Co op choco orange date balls. They're a snack on their lunch deal.

I find dried mango is a really good whole food alternative to sugary snacks. Yes sugary but much better than a chocolate bar.

Sainsbury’s dried mango with lime oil, holy mother! Better than sweets

BingoMarieHeeler · 18/04/2024 19:17

You’d love date bark op! Totally calorific and much harder to portion control than single stuffed dates I bet 😄 but immense.

Pineconepicture · 18/04/2024 19:17

Have you tried Killa Vanilla? I haven't, so no personal experience, but I've been considering it and wondering if it was actually any good with curbing sugar cravings?

Avocados and nuts are great, but you’re wrong about the fat free. Full fat does keep

Fat free Greek yoghurt, Skyr, etc are high in protein. The body takes longer to process protein meaning it fills you up for longer without being as calories dense as fat.

Food volume is one of keys to not being in a calorie excess and to being in a deficit if you're trying to lose weight without being hungry and miserable. 10 almonds and 100g of fat free Greek yoghurt have the same calories. Other nuts are higher in calories than almonds.

Staringatthemoon · 18/04/2024 19:25

Natural fats cured my craving completely and gave me that lovely satiation feeling all the time. Avocados, definitely were a big part of the diet plus fatty fish like salmon. It’s an expensive diet though😀

I will try but I am a binge eater so there are good chances I will have nth number of choc bars after the healthy home made meal and the choc nut dates.

Has anyone tried hypnosis? Or acupuncture? I am pretty sure my food/sugar addiction may be trauma but I can’t afford nth years of therapy.

I have used a free hypnosis app on line with excellent results.
It’s called Sugar Stop Challenge.

Not everyone is on a diet.

Loveskin2024 · 18/04/2024 20:47

Dates are packed with sugar x

KateDelRick · 18/04/2024 20:48

All sugar is natural.

Liquorish · 18/04/2024 20:52

I’m glad it’s working for you, OP. It’s a delicious snack. I used to make those and other healthy snacks/desserts (date balls/sweet potato brownies/chickpea cookie dough/plant based cheesecakes) but it still made me binge on sugar worse than I ever have. I do better just having a little of what I want instead of trying to avoid it.

I'm interested but I'm definitely not googling Bliss Balls

😂😂

Sadly, not a miracle cure for those with nut allergies. They sound yummy though!

Try tahini, sunflower seed butter, perhaps almond butter depending on your allergy profile

Zhampagne · 18/04/2024 21:00

DrJoanAllenby · 18/04/2024 18:56

Dates are disgusting and cause me a mild irritation in my throat.

That is likely a mild allergy.

sunnydayhereandnow · 18/04/2024 21:02

No need to bother spreading peanut butter. Just put half a walnut in the space in the date.

Blue cheese is also surprisingly great as a stuffing for medjool dates.

Cakeandcoffee93 · 18/04/2024 21:23

Totally agree my sister makes me these I’m diabetic type one and oh my god they are divine and good for cravings
